Chapter one

Leon POV

Here I am, sitting in my truck driving back home. The AC is giving me a headache so I open the window to let some fresh air in and I smell that familiar scent, the trees, and the river. I decide to make a stop and enjoy the view of the top of the mountain. I have a lot to think about, so much to deal with. I can't believe dad has finally decided to step down and he wants me to become the new Alpha. I can't believe that has been ten years since I left.

It's been eleven years since I lost my mate. eleven years since my younger siblings were born. Eleven years since I became depressed and I was on a journey of self-destruction. The loss of a mate is the worse thing we can ever go through. But I survived, With the help of my family I managed to keep myself sane. I caused a lot of trouble and that is why I got sent away. I was determined that I couldn't become alpha so I was trying to make the pack hate me.

I haven't seen anyone from my family or the pack since I left. I had to leave and try to sort out my life. Dad sent me to a remote pack in Alaska. I hate the cold but they were strict and punished me when I needed to. They made me a better person, they made me a better alpha. They didn't care I was the next Alpha from my pack. They are mostly elders that belong to the lycanthrope council. They made me believe I could be a fair and strong ruler.

I bet the pack won't be happy to have an alpha that won't be able to give them a Luna.

I am now 26 years old. I grew stronger and according to the women I've met, I am a beautiful specimen. I became a player. I can't deny that it helped me. I became immune to women's feelings. All I wanted to do was pleasure myself and get it over with. I couldn't allow them to fall for me, so I was rude and relentless towards them. Use and toss. I know what a prick.

I get back into the truck and I keep driving to the short distance that I am now from home. I look around I know I am about to cross the border to the pack. As I keep driving I can hear the mind link.

"Welcome home son" - father says and I ignore it. I can't risk having an accident just to link back. I arrive in the middle of the town center and I park my truck outside the cafe that I used to go to.

"Good morning" - I say looking at the old lady behind the counter.

"Leon? Is that you?" - She asks and I nod my head. She has grown older and I feel my heart heavier, I used to help her close the cafe when I was around.

"Alpha welcome back" - she says and all the heads turn to look at me. Good thing no human comes here.

"Thank you, good to be back" - I reply taking my usual seat near the window.

I decide to mind-link dad and tell him I will be at the packhouse later on.

As I look outside I start to remember the day I left. I was so desperate that I didn't even say goodbye to my friends, or my brother.

"I heard the new Alpha was in town " - I hear a familiar voice behind me and I stand up to greet James.

"Hey brother" - I say giving him a tight hug

"How have you been?" - he asked me placing both his hands on my shoulder having a good look at me.

"I am good" - I tell him

"Good to have you back" - he says pulling me back for another hug.

We take our seats and it feels like I never left. We talked for hours. It feels good to be back and near my brother.

"Get your ass home" - I hear a mind link from Danni.

" I see she's still the same" - I tell James and he laughs

"You have no idea" - he says while he stands up placing the money on the counter to pay for our coffees.

"I'll meet you at the house" - I say walking towards my truck

"See you there"

I sit on the driver's seat and I allow myself to take a few deep breaths. I start driving towards the packhouse and when I arrive at I park the car in the back and I walk towards the door.

The door opens before I can reach for the locks and I see dad hugging Olivia walking towards me.

"Son, good to have you back"

"It's good to be back old man" - I say giving him a tight hug

"Hello stranger" - I hear Olivia say

"Luna" - I say with a smile and she gives me a caring hug.

Olivia is the reason I am the next alpha. She convinced dad to legitimize me and James so we could be the next ones in line for the Alpha. James didn't have the gene to be an Alpha, he's my Beta. Even though he is older than me. He is smaller and slower than me

I see the twins behind dad and I kneel on the floor so I can be the same height as them.

"Hello you two" - I say with a smile on my face

"Alpha" - they both say

"Come here" - I say opening my arms and they both run towards me and hug me. They were one year old when I left, I know they don't remember me from back then. It good thing Olivia would make video calls so they could see me every couple of months.

"You are both so tall" - I tell them

"I want to be as tall as you" - Anthony says and I smile

"I want to be as strong as you" - Alice says and I hug her tight lifting her in the air

"Put me down" - she says giggling.

I do as she says and then I see Danni with her twins in the back. They both run to me and hug me tight.

"We missed you" - they say together

"I missed you too"

"How about me?" - I hear Danni say while she walks to me and hugs me.

It's good to be back but I have to admit that I am feeling a little overwhelmed. I blame dad and Olivia for the loss of my mate. But Olivia lost her twin sister. She was suffering as well. And I behaved like a dick.

"Come on, let him go to his room and get some rest" - Dad says and I smile at him.

"there's a dinner party in your honor tonight at seven" - Olivia says and I nod grabbing my bangs and taking them upstairs towards my room.

When I open the door I look around to see that everything looks the same way as it was when I left.

I throw my bags on the floor and I walk towards the window opening it and that's when I am hit by an amazing scent.

I sniff the air and my wolf starts to get agitated.

"Calm down will you?" - I tell him

"Did you smell that?" - he says back

"Yeah, but we have to ignore it, I can't be sleeping around with every woman that opens her legs to me anymore"

"You're no fun"

"And you're a dick" - I say blocking him and starting to unpack.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

I went to the New York City Clerk's office to handle a simple administrative matter, but the woman behind the glass handed me a nightmare instead. It was a certified marriage license from Clark County, Nevada, filed exactly three months ago. My vision blurred as I read the name in the spouse field: Baxter Noel. I was legally married to the ruthless billionaire whose legal team was currently suing me for intellectual property theft and trying to destroy my career. I remembered the conference in Las Vegas and a drink that tasted far too sweet, followed by a twelve-hour black hole in my memory that I had chalked up to exhaustion. When I sought help at my family's estate, my stepmother and sister didn't offer comfort; they stole my passport, shredded my clothes, and framed me for academic plagiarism to strip away my university fellowship. Even Baxter himself looked me in the eye with cold indifference, claiming he didn't know me and promising to have me arrested for fraud if I ever showed him that document again. Within twenty-four hours, I was homeless, jobless, and being hunted by the most powerful man in the city. I couldn't understand why a man who "eats people for breakfast" would be caught in the same trap as a struggling scientist like me. The confusion turned to pure terror when I looked at the witness signature on the license: Gene Mcclain. My mother, who was supposed to have died in a car crash ten years ago, had signed that paper with a fresh, trembling hand only ninety days ago. "I am holding a grenade, and I have no idea when the pin was pulled." Standing in the biting November wind with nothing but a laptop and a marriage license, I realized I was just a pawn in a much deadlier game. I stopped running and began to fight back, determined to use my unwanted status as the billionaire's wife to uncover the truth about the mother who came back from the dead.

My five-year-old daughter was turning blue in my arms, her body rigid with a 104-degree fever. I called my billionaire husband, Clifton, dozens of times as I rushed to the hospital, but he declined every single call. While I was screaming at doctors and fighting to save our child’s life, a news alert flashed on my phone. Clifton was at the Met Gala, looking devastatingly handsome as he intimately draped his tuxedo jacket over the shoulders of his mistress, Eleanora. The nightmare didn't end at the hospital. Clifton used a secret clause in our prenup to snatch Lily from her bed and move her to a private facility without my consent. When I finally found her, my own daughter shrank away from me in terror. "Go away, bad Mommy!" she sobbed, while the mistress fed her oatmeal and whispered that I was the one who made the doctors hurt her. Clifton stood by and watched, telling me I was too "hysterical" to be a mother. But then I discovered the real reason they were hiding her. My husband was illegally using my late mother’s rare bone marrow samples to treat Eleanora’s secret blood disorder. Now that those samples are failing, he is taking Lily to a secluded castle in Germany to harvest our daughter’s marrow for his mistress. I sat in the dark, watching them play happy family with the child they plan to sacrifice. I realized then that my marriage wasn't just a lie—it was a biological harvest. They think I’m just a broken trophy wife who doesn't understand the science they are using to destroy me. They have no idea that I am "Ghost," the anonymous medical genius behind the very research they are trying to steal. As we board the private jet to Germany, I’ve stopped crying and started calculating. If they want to play with life and death, I’ll show them exactly what happens when a mother stops being a victim and starts being a predator.
