Just a touch Chapter 1 School Days

.

.

The tick-tock sound of dripping water coming through the windows caught my attention. I slowly opened my eyes to the rays of sunlight piercing through the window. The weather is still chilly as it just finished raining. I sighed and stretch my hand, reaching the mini drawer beside my bed. Its a Sunday morning. Time to complete this story, i said to my self as i opened the rainbow coloured dairy in my hands.

My name is Ahmad, a successful young man in my early 30s and this is my story........

Growing up in the Northern part of Nigeria where religion, culture and tradition are predominantly the order of living is a stressful life for a boy with complicated feelings like me. I live in a small town where farming and fishing activities are reigning due to the good soil of the town and the abundant river that passed through the town. Many people from different part of the country come to my village for trading and other business activities. Every household in my town are either farmers or fishers. Young boys like me only end up in the farm and young girls are married to rich men while others are sent to the city as house helps. Only a few whose families still have the idea of education are allowed to go to school. Even though i disturb my family about enrolling me in the public school in my town, my father and older siblings will scold me and call me lazy. I don't know what you gave birth to, my father said referring to my mother, boys of Ahmad's age are always seen in the farm or market, but he literally spends all of his day either at home or in that useless school you claimed you enrolled him. Calm down daddy, my mother replied, Ahmad will soon be writing his final exams and i will send him to the city, so you won't have to bother seeing him, she said. Send him to which city? My father shouted, as if the years he wasted going to that school is not enough, now you want to send him out, with whose money, he shouted again. Oh please Mr, i want my son to be educated, least you forgot, i am also a farmer and i have enough money to sponsor my child, you already have his siblings following your tracks and dancing to your tunes, let me also have Ahmad do as i wish, at least i would know that i benefit from this marriage, she said as she drop the tray of grains on her laps. My father threw away the cutlass on his hand in anger, I don't care what you want to do, but i am getting Ahmad married next year, he is already 20, i see no reason he would still be under my root extorting my hard earned money, he said and walk out of the house furiously. My mom hissed and enter her room. Oh my God, i sighed as i drop the book i was reading, this early morning fights has become a daily routine in my house. I wonder why my father is so cultured and obsessed with marriage. As if he would be the one to be married, why would he force me to do what i don't want to, i hissed as i closed the book and head out of the house.

Ahmad! Ahmad!!, I heard my friend calling my name as i was walking my road to the river. Mr Lukman has been expecting you at school yesterday but you were Absent, what happened, Mike asked as he tapped my shoulder, he was panting seriously. Oh Mike, you know my father and tradition, he forced me to attend a function at his church yesterday, he wants to get me delivered from what ever he thought was disturbing me, i said and we both bursted into laugh. Seriously Ahmad you need to give you father a break, Mike said as we continued walking to the river. Get out Mike, its easy for you, your family understands that you want to study and they allow you even though you are a dumb lazy kid, i know you are just using school to escape farm works, i said hitting his head. But look at me, i am putting all efforts into this but my father won't consider it, i added. Stop the bitter face Ahmad, it makes you look ugly and those girls will stop looking at us, Mike said paying attention to the girls walking towards us. When will you admit that you only follow me around just to talk to girls, i asked hitting his head. Will you stop hitting me already, Mike said. Well, i wish i was the one that's this handsome with brain, he added laughing. Unfortunately, you are ugly and dumb, i said and we all laughed. Hey Ahmad, the girls greeted as they were passing.

Mike engaged into a chat with them, i just stood there, nodding and smiling. That's one thing Mike is good at, Flirting with girls, he uses me for attention and take the opportunity to flirt with girls. I don't know why girls are not attractive me, no matter how hard i try, i don't feel the connection Mike always talks about. Guy, what is your problem, those girls are tripping for you but you just walked out on us, Mike said as he sits beside me on a small rock by the river side. Let me be Mike, you know that's not my way, i replied. That's your own problem, he said. So why was Mr. Lukman looking for me at school yesterday, hope all is well, i asked. Oh, that. A new teacher was sent to the school to replace our former English teacher, guess he is a copper, Mike said. So what does that has to do with me, i said. Will you allow me finish talking, Mike shouted. The teacher asked for our notes so he can see where we stopped, but you know, no one is serious as you are, he added. You are all bunches of lazy kids who are privileged to have understanding parents, i said as i stood up to leave. Where are you going to, we just got here, atleast lets wait and dive a bit, Mike said. Sorry, i remembered i had to do some chores, i said as i walk away.

I wonder why life has to be so unfair, i am working hard on this path but still, i have to suffer family drama. These kids that are not putting any effort are having it on a free platter. This is so unfair, i said to my self as i walk home.

Ahmad..... Did you just got home, i have arranged your stuffs for the week, my mother said as she handed me a bag full of food stuffs. Thank you mother, i said as i collected the bag. What is wrong with you, you seems a bit down, are you alright, she asked as she moved closer, touching my face. I am fine mother, just wondering how unfair life is, i said looking worried. Don't worry my dear, i know you are thinking why you have to suffer this family issues just because you choose a different path, but don't worry, no matter what the outcome will be, i will stand by you, she said. Now get ready, that is for 3 weeks, she said pointing at the bag with me, atleast, you will stay a long time and also start preparing for your exams, she added. Three weeks mother, i am fine with coming home weekly, i can help you on the weekend, i said. You don't have to, i am fine, here, keep this money for emergency purpose, she said handing me some money. Thank you mother, you are the best, i said as i gave her a warm hug. This is the only thing i enjoy most in this family, the connection between me and mother, she is my best friend and support all decisions i made.

I normally stays back at school for a week because of the transport expenses which my mother alone can't cover, so i was given a small room by the school beside the teachers lounge, considering how dedicated i am to studying. I parked all what i needed for 3weeks and bid mother good bye. I left the house immediately before my father returns with another bunch of drama. Reaching school, i settled and rest a bit. I came out to the field in the evening where guys normally played football. I noticed Mr. Lukman's car was still at the school's premises so i decided to go greet him. Good evening principal, i said as i entered his office. Evening Ahmad, have you resumed already, he asked. Yes sir, i did. I wasn't aware you left school early yesterday and i was also expecting you tomorrow, he said. I am sorry Sir, i had to leave unprepared because my father sent for me, and i returned today so i could cover up before Monday, i replied. Okay then, there is a new English teacher taking over next week, i want you to show him your notes and syllabus so he can continue from where you stopped, he said. And yes, he is living in the teachers lounge since no one is occupying it, you can say hi to him later, Mr Lukman said as he stood up. Okay Sir, i will do that. Okay then, see you next week. We walk out of the office together and he head to his car.

I walk back to my room and stood by the little fence facing the teachers lounge. He came out wearing a short and an armless shirt. My heart tripped seeing his well built body structure. I managed to swallow a bit as my mouth was dry. A very young and good looking guy, maybe 28yrs, with a dark skin and beared full face. I stared at him for a while as he walked out of the school. I couldn't take my eyes off him till he disappear into the air.

My heart was beating so fast. What is wrong with you Ahmad, i asked my self as i sit hopelessly on the floor.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I sat on the edge of the examination table, the crinkle of the sanitary paper sounding like thunder in the sterile room. The doctor didn't even look at me as he confirmed the news: the pregnancy was over. My husband, Keyon, didn't answer my call. He just sent an automated text: "In a meeting." When I returned to our cold mansion, I found his iPad glowing with a message from his "muse," Katina. He was throwing her a secret gala tonight-on our third wedding anniversary. He told her he couldn't wait to escape the "boring" and "draining" atmosphere I created at home. Keyon didn't stumble in until 3 AM, smelling of Katina's perfume with a smear of red on his collar. When I handed him the divorce papers, he laughed in my face. He called me a "glorified housekeeper" with no skills and no future, promising I'd be back in three days begging for a subway ticket. He even bet his friends ten thousand dollars that I wouldn't survive a week without his name. He had his assistant cancel my credit cards and block my gate access before I even reached the end of the driveway. He wanted me to starve. He wanted me to crawl. He sat in his office, mocking the "desperate" woman who pawned her three-million-dollar wedding ring for scrap metal just to pay for a meal. I stood on the rainy curb, watching the man I had protected for three years treat my life like trash. He didn't know about the ultrasound I just threw in the bin. He didn't know that while he was calling me "dull," I was the one secretly writing the code that kept his billion-dollar empire from collapsing. As I slid into a cheap Uber, I opened a hidden, encrypted app on my phone. The screen refreshed to a dashboard for an account Keyon didn't know existed. The balance was ten figures long-the accumulated wealth of "Solaris," the world's most elusive tech genius. Keyon thinks he just evicted a parasite, but he's about to find out he just declared war on the only person who can hit "delete" on his entire life.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."

I Slapped My Fiancé-Then Married His Billionaire Nemesis

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
