Queen Of The Underworld Chapter 1 Korey

"Korey!" My boss calls out.

"Yes," I answer lazily.

"Did you send out the daisy for Mr Adams?"

"Yes, I did ma'am" I reply, this was the fifth time she was asking me, and frankly it was starting to annoy me.

"Good, now I need you to start with the Ramírez flower arrangement," she says as she steps out of the supply closet.

"Of course, Mama June" I nod with a smile.

Mama June is a 55-year-old woman, who is forgetful and partially blind. She took me in less than three years ago. My adoptive parents were getting a divorce, and I was not doing so well until she stumbled into my life, well I stumbled into her shop thinking it was a bar.

Since then, she has been taking care of me, she calls me her godchild from heaven, she treats me like one of her grandchildren and I love her the same way I love my grandmother.

Her small weak figure walks past me, she is pale, much paler than usual. She grabs onto the counter and puts her hand to her heart.

"Mama June" I call out to her.

"I'm okay baby child, don't worry," she says and carries on walking towards the front of the shop.

I go about my business and carry on working. As the day goes on, I keep begging Mama June to go home, and she finally does go home early to get some rest because the poor woman works herself too much. I hate seeing her do that, so I am left alone to finish up some orders for the next day.

Later that evening I am putting together the last arrangement when I realize that I am out of Petunias, I sigh, now I must go out to the garden in the back. I slip on my jacket, put on my garden boots, get my basket and scissors, and go out the back door.

I walk down the small path to the petunia section; thank God that place had lighting another wise, I would have ruined all the flowers by now. Not only that, but I am afraid of the dark but more importantly I am afraid of Mama June.

I kneeled in front of the Petunias and carefully cut them and put them in the basket. Just as I am about to finish, I hear rustling. I look around and see nothing, my heart starts beating fast.

Must be squirrels, I think.

The rustling gets further away, and I see a flash in the distance. I get up and walk towards the flash of light. I know what you are thinking, do not go into the light. Well, I cannot help it, I need to know what is happening. As I get closer, I see a door.

Why the hell is there a door on the ground?

I peek inside, but I cannot see anything, it is dark, I get my phone out of my pocket and turn on the flashlight. A flight of stairs heading deeper under the ground.

Do not go down there, Korey! My brain says.

I scoff, I am going down there.

I go down the stairs and the further I go, the warmer it gets. Suddenly I reached another door.

Girl, you are going to die tonight!

I turn the doorknob and open the door. I am in a room, someone's bedroom, a man's to be specific. The entire room looks like a room from Game of Thrones, a massive bed with four poles and white curtains, big windows, a shelf of books and skulls, medieval paintings.

I love it! Whoever lives here has a profound sense of style.

I continue to walk around the room and see a picture of a man, he is gorgeous, piercing green eyes, tattoos covering his body, chiselled jawline, he is a dream.

I would jump him any day; I think to myself.

Not only that, but I continue to look around when I hear voices coming from the other side of the room. It sounds like people having sex. I cringe, this was awkward.

Bed creaking, girl moaning, boy grunting. It is simply weird. So that is my cue to leave, I walk back to the door and close it, feeling sad for some reason. Apart from me did not want to leave, I wanted to stay there, I feel a sense of peace as unusual as that sounds, but it is not my home, I must leave.

I close the door and go back up the stairs, out the door and close it shut. I stood there for a moment.

Why the hell was I getting emotional over this? I scold myself, get a grip!

It felt like home, though.

Oh, get over it and get back to work!

I sigh once more and walk back to my basket, I pick a few more petunias and make my way back into the shop. I put together the last arrangement and I clean up my workstation. Not only that, but I close the shop and make the five-minute walk home, I live by myself in a small apartment, in the nice part of town.

Two weeks after Mama June employed me, she gave me my first paycheque and the keys to my apartment. She thought that I needed to stay close to the shop just in case she had an emergency and needed me to be there.

I get to my door and see a letter on the floor, it's from my dad. I unlock my door and go back into my apartment and lock the door again, I throw my bag on the floor and make my way into the kitchen. Furthermore, I open the fridge and take out some leftover Mac and cheese, warm it up and go to sit on my couch.

I switch on the TV and realize that it is 23:39, how did time fly so quickly? I finished eating and headed straight to bed, I had to be up early in the morning to deliver the Ramírez flower arrangement to the wedding venue before 09:00 am.

I take a quick shower and jump into bed, and before I can fall asleep my phone rings, it is Papa June.

"Hello" I answered groggily, rubbing my eyes.

"Sorry to wake you, dear, but I have sad news," Papa June says worriedly.

I sit upon my bed, "What's wrong?"

"It's Mama June, she's had a heart attack"

My entire world was shattered.

"But she's okay, she's being taken care of," Papa June replies.

I sigh, "Do you want me to come over?"

"No, no, I'll be alright dear, Chase is here with me,"

"Okay, I'll come by in the morning to see you both,"

"Thank you, Korey, now get some rest, we'll see you in the morning."

He hangs up the phone and stares blankly at it. Letting out a sigh of frustration, I put my phone on the bedside table and lay back down on my bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind can't help but drift back to the underground palace.

I thought I was waking up in the arms of Arthur, the man I loved. But as the morning light hit the Hamptons estate, the man buttoning his cuffs by the window turned around with eyes like chips of ice. It was Augustus Riddle, Arthur’s cruel younger brother, and I had just spent the night whispering confessions of love into the wrong man's ear. The night I thought was a beautiful beginning turned into a devastating nightmare. Instead of comfort, Gus treated me like a stain on his expensive carpet, scribbling a check for "services rendered" before shoving me into a dark service corridor to hide my existence from his brother. "How much does it cost to buy your silence?" He sneered, before leaving me barefoot in a torrential downpour while he drove away in a luxury Cadillac. Four years later, I am a struggling actress in Los Angeles, working double shifts as a barista just to keep the lights on. My life was finally stable until my roommate dragged me to a high-end dinner to meet her new "influential" boyfriend. The man sitting at the table, looking more arrogant and lethal than ever, was Augustus. He spent the entire night humiliating me, calling me a pathetic amateur and a social climber in front of my only friends. When I fled into the rain and collapsed on the sidewalk, skinning my knee until I bled, he watched from his car. He saw me clutching a plastic baggie containing the taped-together pieces of that four-year-old check—the only proof of my shame. He looked at me like roadkill, rolled up his window, and drove off into the dark. I couldn't understand why he was doing this. Why did he hate me enough to crush me, yet remember that I couldn't handle the smell of cigarette smoke? Why did he leave me bleeding in the street, only to send expensive medical supplies and coffee to my door the very next morning? "I'm moving out." I told my roommates, realizing that Gus Riddle didn't just want to destroy me; he wanted to haunt me. I grabbed my suitcase and walked out with eighty dollars to my name, finally ready to disappear into the city before he could burn the rest of my life to the ground.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

I stood in the darkest corner of the Pierre Hotel’s ballroom, my cheap polyester dress itching against my skin while my wristband buzzed with a DARPA Priority Red alert. In front of the city’s elite, my fiancé Bryce Calloway took the stage, not to toast our future, but to publicly end our engagement and announce he was with my sister, Chloe. The room turned on me instantly, a hundred pairs of eyes pinning me down with pity and disgust as they physically backed away like I was contagious. When I returned home, my mother shattered a crystal vase at my feet, screaming that I was a humiliation and a "dropout" who didn't deserve a cent of the family fortune. Chloe and Bryce mocked me, laughing when I told them I had a mission with the National Security Agency, convinced I was either a pathological liar or a low-level criminal. They watched in horror as a black, unmarked military helicopter descended on our backyard to extract me, yet they still chose to believe I was being arrested for drug trafficking. They saw a pathetic girl who couldn't even parallel park, never realizing I was Dr. Nova Vance, the lead physicist behind the world's first successful fusion reactor. To secure funding for my research and gain a "fortress" of a name, I signed a thirty-day marriage contract with the arrogant billionaire Roman Knight. He treats me like a fraud, convinced I’m a gold-digger who failed out of college, while I quietly run global energy simulations from his guest bedroom. He has no idea that the "loser" he’s forced to live with is the same anonymous grandmaster who has been ruthlessly crushing him in online strategy games for months. "The contract is active," I told him, looking past his expensive suit. "But don't expect me to be your maid."
