Life and Death Mission system Chapter 1 Betrayal

Mercy Lin worked for a big company as a spy together with her boyfriend.

She planned to stop her work after the mission they were working on. She wanted to settle down and start her family. Being 30 years old and dated her boyfriend, Max Gee, she wanted to settle for five years.

The mission was to get a disk from TOCIN MANUFACTURERS this time around. It was a big weapon manufacturing company in the country. It was rumored to be making a potent weapon that could destroy the entire world.

The instruction was to get the disk, hand it over and get 100 million as remuneration for the risk. The pay was good. That's why she took it. She needed the money to start over.

Inside the big machinery room in the said company, Mercy Lin got the required disk without much effort.

Beaming in happiness, she turned to Max with a big smile. She placed the disk on her backpack, walking to him.

"Honey, finally, we got the disk. We will hand this over and be done with them. No more dangerous missions, we can now start our family and live peacefully" Mercy was so happy in her imagination that she did not see a malicious smile flash on her boyfriend's eyes. She walked and stood a few steps from him.

"That's great," Max said stiffly.

"Now, hand over the disk. I will get it over to them and get the 100 million they offered and meet you at your house later. "

He continued furrowing his brows, "We can talk over everything about marriage and family." Max Gee said to Mercy Lin without much emotion on his face

Of course, she caught the weird expression on his face. Though he smiled, he was not happy about it.

"What's the matter? Are you having second thoughts about us?" She quickly asked him, looking straight into his eyes.

They were in the middle of the machinery room in a technology company and chatting leisurely.

"You are really something."

Max sighed and said, all of a sudden, dropping his facade

He continued taking placing his hands in his pockets. "Do you think I could leave my line of work to settle down in a remote town and start having kids?" He asked her, looking at her mockingly. He seemed disgusted with the thought.

"That's the last thing in my mind right now. I just need the 100 million and a reputation." He stated right on her face. She could not believe it. Agape, she could not control the amount of pain she felt. The sharp pain in her heart could not be described in words. She felt someone piercing her hand raw and taking her heart out.

"Also, the company will not let you go just like that. You know too much. So..." Max Gee said, strolling towards her. Mercy Lin knew the look too well. He was up to something.

She took small steps behind her, asking curiously.

"What do you want to do?" She asked shakily. Though they were all spies and assassins trained to survive in different situations, she didn't see that coming. Taking the steps back, she hit something. She found her back on a pipe, facing him, looking back to check. It seemed to be a gas pipe or something.

She didn't have the strength to fight him. If the disk falls into the wrong hand, it could destroy the whole world. That's what she knew. She overheard some men speaking in the conference room a few days ago before being given the same mission.

"So, what I want is to take your life? Make it seem like you broke here to steal. Of which you did, and the gas right behind you exploded by accident, and you died." Max Gee confidently pointed his finger at the gas pipe behind her. Mercy knew him as a merciless killer and would not think twice when he made his mind. He had his killer smile on. That was a danger sign.

"Have you ever loved me?" she asked, her tears threatening to fall.

"That's a silly question." He stopped for a moment before he answered her

"Well, let's just say I never loved you." He continued looking, staring at her face in a blank expression. The smirk on his lips was enough to completely break her. Her mind went blank for a moment and almost fell down. She could not and will never show her weakness to anyone in her life.

"I just wanted to have my way with you. It was your fantasy to be together. You were more beneficial when it came to working so, you were just what I needed." He continued to drop bombshell after another on her.

"Now that you don't want to work anymore, the company does not want you alive. I am just hired to kill you, that's all." Max said to her, licking his lips with his hands on his trousers. He had an amusing look on his face. He seemed to be enjoying her pain and the drama.

"So. Why don't you just hand over the disk, and I will let you go. I don't want to see such a beautiful you being cold and green or burnt beyond recognition." Max Gee said with a trace of regret imagining it. The teasing and amusing smile on his face made her feel disgusted.

"You are truly evil. I should have listened to the boss when he said you were a threat and greedy for the company." Mercy said, tears trickling down her face. She knew she could not do anything to save herself. If they got him to kill her, he would definitely do it.

"Do you think I will let you have your way? I will not give up without a fight." She started taking a fighting stance. She moved from the pipe and went round him in position. Though she was heartbroken, she would not let anyone kill her because they felt she was a threat. No one owned her life.

"Since you want me dead, and I want you with me, why don't we just die together?" She was an assassin, and an escape route had to be created at any moment.

Max Gee was stunned and took a position as well. They were all trained and knew each other's weaknesses and strengths. He knew he could kill her in a minute but wanted to enjoy her last minutes. He had never found someone he could compete with equality except her. Though he could kill her in minutes, she could do the same with him if he was not careful.

"Bring it on, baby." He said teasingly, taking steps forward and back, mimicking her movements.

Mercy did not waste time and took the lead. She threw a kick that he dodged. She threw another kick at a perfect angle, and it hit him. He looked stunned. His expression changed, and he also lunged at her with a few kicks. It all hit her; she fell on the ground taking a few tools on top of the metal table down.

She wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth, one hand on the ground. She held the table and stood up. She again took the stance, not giving up, and he came to her with fists. She dodged one and another before kicking his thighs, intending to hit his private area. She missed, and his fists landed hard on the face, neck, and chest. She was thrown down by force on top of the tools on the ground.

She saw a joint on the big pipe, and tools were all over. She did not hesitate. She stood struggling on her feet before picking a hard hammer on top of the table right behind her. Looking at the heavy metal on the pipe, her mind clicked.

She dragged her heavy, painful body and hit it hard.

Took out her gun and pointed at the Max

She was always prepared. Nothing could bring her down without a fair fight. She had nowhere to run to. Only one option was left.

There was no way they could survive the accident. So she threw her life away to drag him down with her. Even that being the case, she was full of bitterness. She felt betrayed to the core.

"What are you doing?" Max Gee was scared out of his mind.

He didn't expect the turn of events. He had everything planned.

His ugly face made Mercy raise her chin high in a smile. 'I got you where I wanted,' she thought to herself, saying goodbye to the world.

She pulled the trigger without waiting for him to finish his words. She enjoyed the panicked expression. It was too late.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.
