Chapter 1 A SHOCKING REQUEST

Madeleine Quinn

Biting my lower lip softly, I watched the image of my boss on my laptop and other details about him, and I twirled my chair around my little office with a sigh of frustration.

As much as I wanted to give Diane's advice a try, I was so scared. I was scared of my boss. I was scared of what he would think of me. I was scared that he would insult me again today just like he did yesterday when he scolded me for being too clumsy.

I needed to give it a try, though. I needed his help badly. I wanted my granny to live. I wanted her to be alive when I finally got married, and see me have kids who would keep her company while I was at work.

If I didn't talk to my boss about the supposed help that I needed, how would I make sure that my grandma survived? Where would I get the money the hospital requested from us? Would granny still be alive when I eventually got married three or four years from now?

I closed my eyes, twirling my straight brown hair and murmuring to myself, when I remembered the hot guy I met at the bar that Diane and I went to four days ago. I thought I had eventually succeeded in landing myself a rich hot boyfriend until he asked me to give him a blowjob in the club.

Gosh! I was so embarrassed but I still did it. I thought that was all and I was excited about having sex for the first time but when he told me how he enjoyed sex, I knew I had to break things off as fast as I could.

He was a fucking sex maniac who liked being kinky during sex. He loved using sex toys and the likes but I wasn't interested in any of that.

The ringing sound of the phone in my office jerked me out of my reverie. I twirled the swivel chair around and grabbed it, answering the phone with an air of professionalism. "Madeleine Quinn speaking," I said calmly.

With Gregory Allen as my boss, I had learned to push all of my problems out of my mind whenever work was at hand because he hated unprofessionalism. He hated clumsy employees and sometimes, I used to wonder why I hadn't been sacked yet.

"Miss Quinn," he said, his sexy husky voice booming in through the intercom, making me self-conscious of what I had been thinking about.

"Yes, sir." I sat upright and listened with rapt attention. I didn't want to miss anything.

"Come to my office now," he informed me sharply.

Before I could reply, he dropped the phone and I did the same, taking in sharp breaths to calm my nerves and I tried to will myself to summon up the courage to bring up my problems when I was eventually inside his office.

I just hoped he was in a good mood. I had to put Diane's advice to good use today and that would determine the next line of action for me. If he didn't eventually help me, then I would have no choice but to swallow my pride and go find Hale Roberts, the man who had wanted to have kinky sex with me after I agreed to be his girlfriend.

I exited my modest office, striding at a fast pace towards my boss's office. I had gone to serve his coffee about an hour ago and he hadn't even spared me so much as a glance. I wondered why he was requesting my presence now. He always told me all I needed to do for the day on the phone unless it was very important.

I knocked softly on the door, waiting with my heart thumping hard.

He called out a "Come in" and I went in with my heart in my mouth. As I entered, I raised my head to look at him and there he was, sitting on his desk and writing on a plain sheet of paper with his laptop open in front of him. He looked busy. I knew him so well to know that he didn't liked being disturbed when he was busy. What did he want then?

"I'm here, sir," I told him, making him pause his writing to raise his head and he looked up at me.

"Sit!" he commanded and I professionally took a seat on one of the chairs opposite his desk. His desk was packed with lots of paperwork that it was almost impossible to see the dark surface of the black desk.

"Joseph Fowler sent an email and you didn't inform me about it." He stared at me intensely, burning me with his harsh glare.

I swallowed a lump in my throat, scolding myself mentally for wasting my time looking for everything about him on Google instead of starting work. That was why I missed the email.

"I checked the mails before leaving work on Friday. I guess it just came in this morning," I replied with my hands shaking on my thighs. They were sweaty as a result of my overall nervousness.

He didn't look convinced. "Haven't you been in your office?"

"I have," I replied.

"What have you been doing, then?" he asked calmly.

I was surprised that he wasn't shouting at me today like on normal days. Was that a good sign? Should I go on with letting him know about my problems?

"Take this." He pushed a file towards me and I took it from him. "Check the email before you work on this file. I want you to arrange the documents in them alphabetically, then reply to the email before returning this file. I'll need them before 2 PM."

"Okay, sir," I said obediently, tucking the file into the crook of my elbow..

"Good." He nodded. "You can go now."

I nodded and stood up, biting my lip and debating within me on whether to tell him about my problem or leave it till later in the day when I was done with my first task for the day.

"What? Why are you still here?" he asked. His pen was in his hand already while he gazed up at me.

I shook my head, my confidence already gone. "I'm sorry," I said.

"Wait", he ordered with authority evident in his voice, making me halt my steps and close my eyes.

I was trying to build up my confidence and courage so that I would be able to talk to him about what I needed from him. I really needed to do this. Granny needed this.

I turned back and bowed my head. "There is something I need to tell you, sir."

Silence cloaked the whole office. He wasn't saying anything and it made me to look up. Why was he silent? He was just watching me with his two hands below his perfect jaw.

I decided to continue. "Um, I need a favor, sir," I stammered, fidgeting with my fingers. "My grandmother needs to be operated on because of her heart. The doctor wants me to deposit some money before anything can be done on her."

"What do you want?" he cut me short in impatience.

I exhaled deeply and muttered a prayer under my breath before I spoke. "We need thirty thousand dollars for the surgery. I want to request a loan from the company and I'll pay it back with my salary."

He looked surprised and I wondered if he would help. "You want us to pay you a year's salary in advance?"

Suddenly, reality crashed on me like a ton of bricks. I didn't even calculate it. My Granny's surgery would cost me a year's salary? Wow!

I nodded meekly and he leaned back in his chair, looking thoughtful for a while and watching me pretty intensely. His gaze pierced deep inside me and I looked away, scared that locking eyes with him would stop him from helping me.

My heartbeat increased in anticipation. The silence was killing me. Was he going to help or not? He should have just said something. Was it a yes or a no? Whatever it was that he would say, I was going to take it in a good way. It was not the end of the world. I was just going to resort to the last option which was to become Hale's slut.

"I'll help you," he announced, making my heart skip a beat and my jaw hit the floor in surprise. Relief washed through me instantly and I almost knelt down in sincere appreciation.

"Thank you, sir," I cried out in excitement as my face broke into a wide smile. "Thank you so much, sir. I really appreciate it."

"But there is a condition attached," he interrupted me with a face devoid of emotions.

A condition? What condition? I asked myself as my lips pulled into a frown. My heart began to race again. It quivered wildly in my chest as if it wanted to explode.

"I want you to become my wife," he blurted still without a change in his overall countenance.

It took a while before his statement settled deeply into my system in understanding. When I fully absorbed it, I gasped loudly in disbelief with mouth agape in shock. "What?"

"Yes," he nodded. "But it's going to just be for a year."

"What?" I asked again.
