When life seems meaningless, when those who should be your companions abandon you without a second thought, chance seems to be the salvation. All Sophia wanted was to forget that one day she loved Rafael, and she finds on a small beach in the neighboring town, what she didn't even know she was looking for. All Vicente wants is his old life back, without shifters, werewolves, vampires and a soulmate who rejected him and ripped his heart out, but a simple walk along the beach presents him with much more than he bargained for.

Chapter 1 She can't stay

Vicente has watched his life being shaken more times than he can count, not only at that moment when they were breaking his heart once again, but also since he was a child. He was only five years old when his mother, tired of the drunken outbursts of her husband, Vicente's father, fled the city, heading for a new country and a new life, leaving him behind. A son would be of no use to a woman desperate to escape the life she leaving behind.

Her second nightmare happened 10 years after losing her mother. The father, who had never stopped drinking, only directing his attacks at the other, the more fragile in the house, had decided that 15 years old are enough to fend for himself. Thrown out of the house, Vincent found himself lost, and had it not been for the parents of his best friend, James, he might not have lasted long enough for another event and all the others that came after because of this one.

At 16, his explosive temper seemed more dangerous than usual. The fights were more constant, and an urge to explode was present. That was when he met Samuel, who explained to him what they were and what he could do. Everyone from that region was known to transform into a specific animal, and when he learned which one, Vincent see himself agree, despite the fear of what this would bring to his life.

So Vincent became the gray wolf that walked beside a black one, that only his own could see. It was a dangerous secret, Vicente needed more than a few months to control his impulses, but when he saw his best friend become one of them, he knew he needed to be strong. He didn't want to expose any of them. The shapeshifters had long worked on going unnoticed, especially to the other creatures, so that young Vincent would ruin everything.

But, when Samuel showed up with Viviane at home during a breakfast just for the boys in the group, Vicente found out about a characteristic of shifters that he wished didn't exist. His life was bad enough without a possible soul mate. As lucky as he was - and there he remembered the death of his father, who had finally died, which gave him his old home back - Vicente knew very well that he would probably be rejected. He could not imagine anyone who would want to be part of his life forever, or rather, until they both died.

And unfortunately Vicente was right. Fate didn't like him, and at that moment the shapeshifter who turned into a wolf found himself wanting to shrink and disappear while being rejected, in a much worse way than he had imagined.

- I can't carry this burden with me, not forever. - the young woman said ahead front of Vincent, breaking something inside him that he didn't even know existed.

- I didn't ask you to carry anything. You have a choice, you can turn your back and leave. I can't, so excuse me if I'm spoiling your act, but I'm the one carrying the burden one way or the other, regardless of what I'm going to do. - Vincent said, ready to close the small door he had opened just for her, the girl who was rejecting him and ignoring what it could do to him by denying him even a simple friendship.

- I could never bear to live near to yoou, Vicente. I never liked to you. I would never feel comfortable living next to a delinquent. That's the truth, and I couldn't live with myself if I stayed here and pretended to feel something I don't.

Vincent felt as if there were daggers entering his heart, at the same time he saw himself beginning to tremble, with the beast inside him desperate to come out and attack, anything he saw in front of him, to vent the anger and hatred that took over the man's still human body. At times like this he regretted having chosen the wolf, for he was about to hurt the human that his shapeshifter heart had chosen.

- Get out of here! Now! He doesn't have to carry the burden of hurting you! - said Samuel, somewhere near Vincent, who closed his eyes, trying to control the uncontrollable.

He searched desperately, for anything that would make him calm down, but when he managed to catch an image of his friendship with James, Samuel and Viviane, the only good thing in his existence, Rachel's voice came back, ruining any progress he had made. Vincent was doomed, there was no longer any doubt.

- He is a monster! - shouted the voice that had brought her comfort, for a few minutes before the truth was exposed, before she opened her mouth and reveal what was bad, inside her very human body.

- Get out now! - shouted James, joining the two, ready to throw out the woman the gods had chosen to be his best friend's companion, when obviously it wouldn't make any sense, at least he saw it that way.

Unlike Samuel, James could only feel disgust for that woman. She had been a part of their school days and he never realized how poisonous she could be.

Seeming to finally see what she was dealing with, Raquel turned and ran home. She left town before Vincent could even get his control back.

And Vicente, who knew he was the most unstable one there and that he wouldn't last long, regretted being that way when he heard those last words, which still disturbed him in his already destroyed heart and would probably continue to do so for a long time.

- It's all right now Vincent. - James said, walking away with Samuel, after they saw Rachel leave, running, afraid of Vincent and that life he never wanted for himself, even with all the stories he had seen told and romanticized.

Vincent growled, leaning over and finally assuming his wolf form. After he ran into the forest, away from everyone, his pack mates knew that he would be even more broken when he returned than he normally was.

None of them could imagine how Vincent would ever be able to overcome another disappointment. Maybe he never would.
