BATTLING FOR HIS MATE Chapter 1 At Last, Freedom

"Don't you have the intention to reconcile with your mate" my wolf, Brownie asked and I pretended not to hear her.

"Are you listening?" she asked, and I know she won't let me have a rest.

"I'm listening, Brownie," I said, walking into the woods in search of food.

"Give an answer to the question" she said and I rolled my eyes.

"I don't have a mate!!" I said and she growled inside of me.

"What about Zack, Selen?" She said calling me Selen, had been something I tried to correct but she won't listen. Later on, I got fond of it, calling me that.

"I don't know who is bearing Zack" I whooped and she got bitter about my utterance.

"You don't know our mate, Selen" she said.

"Fine ! I don't want to talk about him" I said walking faster into the woods.

"But I need him!" she said and I stopped my fast paces.

"Really! Brownie!"

"You care about yourself not me, right?" I asked.

"I wanna feel his scent once more" she said and I understand her pains also. Not getting laid with your mate is not something very nice because she felt some pain.

" Brownie," I called warmly.

"I understand your pain also" I calmed, stepping on a wood.

"I also need him also* I said and she squealed.

"But not anymore * I blurted out immediately and she frowned.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

"We don't need one in our life anymore" I said and she smirked.

"Well, I need one," She shouted, rolling her eyes, making my body vibrate.

"Calm down" I whispered and she stood up roaming about in my system and sat down back angrily.

"We are banned from the kingdom, don't you remember?" I asked and she cooed.

"Let's find a way or get yourself injured, he would feel the pain" she said and I know she's desperate to see her mate by all cost.

Getting my mate's attention could be used by hurting myself and he would feel it but I don't need him anymore.

"I can hear you very clearly" she said and I forgot to disconnect the link, she would be listening.

"Brownie, You are getting more stubborn this day" I said and she scoffed.

"You will be curtained" I warned...

I need one, I wanna get laid" she muttered again and I backbited a laugh and she got more pissed.

"You're gonna get laid" I said.

"Really!" she squealed and I laughed.

"You get laid by someone else " I said and she hissed.

"No-No-noooooo" she screamed.

"I don't wanna get laid anymore," she said.

"Why? You don't wanna get laid anymore" I asked! and she nodded her head negatively.

"Why the Rejection?" I asked.

"I'm not yet healed with the one you did, five years ago just because of revenge" she stated.

"I'm the one feeling the pain, not you" she said and I laughed.

I remembered what happened in the last five years and my countenance changes.

*** FIVE YEARS AGO ***

"I want to be free" Brownie , my wolf muttered and I thought about why she say that?

*What do you mean, Brownie?" I called. I've been calling her brownie, because she is brown in colour which I love so much.

I just turned 18 last month, I had my first shift and it was so painful. My father said if my mate was here with me, it would have been less painful but I have none.

I have not been free to search for me or even know who it was. Maybe a Wolf or human.

Not minding whether it is a wolf or human, all I need is just to see him.

The Differences between a human and werewolf is just because we change into a wolf and we are full blooded animals.

Can I say we are animals or people!

"You don't have to worry Brownie, we're gonna be free very soon" I said in my head.

My mate would be very sure to protect me and the wolf. I felt very Vulnerable about those words.

"I hope so!" she said. I saw her rolling her eyes, she inherited my attitude.

I sat down on the placement at the front of our house picking my nails, feeling bored already and I wondered what type of day it is.

I was still thinking when I felt the presence of my elder brother. He is the one representing the Delta family. Since my father steps down, he was inaugurated as the next Delta of the family and the pack.

Welcome Brother!" I greeted and bowed, standing up to his level. I hate to admit that he's my brother. Our Father has stated it to bow and respect him wherever I meet him.

*Get dressed, and let's move" he said and I wondered why he said so.

"Why the change of cloth?" I asked and he looked at me, eyeing his two eyes on me.

"You are going for a personal training with me since you're not permitted to the general one" he said and I squealed.

"Wow!" I shouted and he smiled sheepishly.

"Will you move or I get going?" he said and I ran into the house for my training kit.

"Mig, where are you?" I asked to look around but I couldn't find him.

"Over here ",he shouted, waving his two hands.

We moved into the woods and he stopped walking and I did the same also. He eyed him and I don't understand what he meant.

"Take off your clothes " he said and I opened my eyes widely.

"What do you mean?" I asked and he smirked.

"Don't prove stubborn, you're my younger sister, I can't hurt you" he said.

"Or do you have extra clothes when you shift into your wolf form?" he asked and then I understood what he was saying.

My clothes will get torn when I get into my wolf form and I will have to walk home naked.

I have no choice but to remove my clothes in front of him. I felt shy when removing it and he laughed.

"Get into your wolf form'" he ordered and I had no choice but to turn to a brown wolf.

"Kill that Rabbit at the end of the shore" he said pointing to the river.

"Be careful because it might run away"

Slow and steady, don't let it suspect you're coming" he said and I walked towards the river gently.

After what took like some minutes, I finally got it and pulled it over to my side and tore it into two.

Blood gushing out of it and sipping it and it tastes so delicious which I can't resist.

"Stop Selena!" Mig called moving to my side and removed the dead meat from my mouth.

I changed back into my human form and I felt bitter about it.

"Why do you do that?" I asked.

"Brownie ! She's angry" I muttered.

"You have the authority to stop and control her" he said.

"If you continue like this, your wolf will get wild and that would be bad for you" he explained.

"Thanks bro" I wanted to hug him but was restricted.

"You're ..."He paused, pointing to my naked body and I ran to pick my clothes.

"I want to inform you that..." he paused and I moved away from the tree.

"What!?" I asked.

"I asked father to give you some freedom," he said and I looked anxious.

"Hmm-Hmm" I hummed.

"And he granted you the request.." he said and I cut him off by shouting.

"But there would be some curfew" he said and I nodded.

"Brownie" I called, turning on the bond between us.

"What!"

"I have good news for you, " I said.

"We're gonna be free," I said. and she wagged her tail happily.

"AT LAST, FREEDOM BROWNIE* I said jumping up and down.

"Hold on !" I called my brother and ran after him.

I thought I was waking up in the arms of Arthur, the man I loved. But as the morning light hit the Hamptons estate, the man buttoning his cuffs by the window turned around with eyes like chips of ice. It was Augustus Riddle, Arthur’s cruel younger brother, and I had just spent the night whispering confessions of love into the wrong man's ear. The night I thought was a beautiful beginning turned into a devastating nightmare. Instead of comfort, Gus treated me like a stain on his expensive carpet, scribbling a check for "services rendered" before shoving me into a dark service corridor to hide my existence from his brother. "How much does it cost to buy your silence?" He sneered, before leaving me barefoot in a torrential downpour while he drove away in a luxury Cadillac. Four years later, I am a struggling actress in Los Angeles, working double shifts as a barista just to keep the lights on. My life was finally stable until my roommate dragged me to a high-end dinner to meet her new "influential" boyfriend. The man sitting at the table, looking more arrogant and lethal than ever, was Augustus. He spent the entire night humiliating me, calling me a pathetic amateur and a social climber in front of my only friends. When I fled into the rain and collapsed on the sidewalk, skinning my knee until I bled, he watched from his car. He saw me clutching a plastic baggie containing the taped-together pieces of that four-year-old check—the only proof of my shame. He looked at me like roadkill, rolled up his window, and drove off into the dark. I couldn't understand why he was doing this. Why did he hate me enough to crush me, yet remember that I couldn't handle the smell of cigarette smoke? Why did he leave me bleeding in the street, only to send expensive medical supplies and coffee to my door the very next morning? "I'm moving out." I told my roommates, realizing that Gus Riddle didn't just want to destroy me; he wanted to haunt me. I grabbed my suitcase and walked out with eighty dollars to my name, finally ready to disappear into the city before he could burn the rest of my life to the ground.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband's Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn't find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn't even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father's legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn's party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara's health and managing every detail of Caden's empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I'd drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause-if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I'd forgotten.

My five-year-old daughter was dying in the ICU, her heartbeat replaced by the continuous, electronic scream of a flatline. I gripped her cold hand, my throat sealed shut by a terror so absolute I couldn't even cry out. I dialed my husband Grayson's private number, the one reserved only for me and his assistants. He declined the call instantly. A second later, a text buzzed against my palm: "In a meeting. Do not disturb. Stop calling." Five miles away, Grayson was at a luxury gala, adjusting his silk tie and laughing with Belle Escobar. He told her I was just being "dramatic" and using our daughter's "fever" as an excuse to avoid the event. He had no idea Effie's heart had already stopped. When I finally reached our penthouse, soaked from the rain and carrying Effie's small socks in a plastic bag, Grayson didn't even look at me. He snapped at me for ruining the hardwood floors and asked if I'd left Effie with the nanny just to "feel sorry for myself." Three days later, while I buried our daughter in a small, lonely ceremony, Grayson was at the Hamptons. Belle posted a photo of him golfing with the caption: "A mental health day with the boys." He didn't even attend the funeral, but he returned home demanding I clear out Effie's room to make a study for Belle's son. The injustice burned through me until there was nothing left. I swallowed a handful of sleeping pills, desperate to join my daughter. But instead of the darkness, I woke up to blinding lights and the scent of Grayson's expensive cologne. I was standing in a ballroom, wearing a blue silk dress I had already burned. Above me, a banner read: "Happy 5th Birthday Kaiden & Effie." I was back, exactly one year before the tragedy. This time, I wasn't going to be the grieving wife. I was going to be their worst nightmare.
