Chapter 1 .

"Come on Mike, just take me with you," as I cling to my brother's arm, I didn't what him to leave. We were having breakfast when he told me that he needs to go to Europe for a business meeting. That's when I stand up and end up clinging to my brother and here, I am acting like a kid whining-, hoping-, persuading my only brother to take me.

"Elle, even if I wanted to, you still have a few weeks before summer vacation, I doubt Dad will agree to take you with me..." it's as if he already knows what I'm thinking...

"Arrgg! You just said a few weeks, they wouldn't kick me out even if I take a week of absence, come on Mike..." I whined like an eight-year-old

"What's going on here?" Heard Dad's voice echoing before we even hear his footsteps

"Dad, I'm persuading my brother to take me with him, it's only for a few da..."

"No!" I didn't even get a chance to finish what I was saying when Dad suddenly screams.

We are both shocked by his sudden outburst

"Is something wrong Dad?" I ask as I approach him

"No, nothing... Michael sends your sister to school, then go straight to the airport" Dismiss us just like that

-------

"Is something wrong with Dad?" I ask my brother as he drives me to school

"Must be the company"

"Why? What happened?"

"That's not something you should concern yourself with, just focus on your studies," he said calmly but his eyes say otherwise, but I did not ask more obviously, he didn't want me to know

"Hey!" He suddenly rubs my head like I'm some puppy

"Off you go." I wasn't paying attention, only when I heard my brother's voice that I realize we have already arrived. As I close the car door, and give my brother a flying kiss, he just laughs at me and waves goodbye

------

As soon as the bell rang, I receive a phone call from Dad, telling me to go home immediately. I wanted to ask why, but the call is already cut After saying goodbye to my friends, I run out of school, there was this gut feeling that something isn't right, that's why I hurriedly run to my family's car and Uncle Fred our family driver is waiting.

Once I got in, I ask him "What's wrong?" He just looks at me with a worried expression from the rear mirror.

That made my heart beat so fast, it felt like I run a mile. The moment we arrived, I immediately open the car door and run inside the house

BANG!

What is that shot!? That made me pause for a second, then I proceed to run upstairs to Dad's office where I heard a gunshot. The instant, I open the door and was greeted with blood splattered on the wall and pooling on my dad's feet

"AHHHHHHH!!"

I sat on the cold tile floor of our Upper East Side penthouse, staring at the two pink lines until my vision blurred. After ten years of loving Julian Sterling and three years of a hollow marriage, I finally had the one thing that could bridge the distance between us. I was pregnant. But Julian didn't come home with flowers for our anniversary. He tossed a thick manila envelope onto the marble coffee table with a heavy thud. Fiona, the woman he'd truly loved for years, was back in New York, and he told me our "business deal" was officially over. "Sign it," He said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He looked at me with the cold detachment of a man selling a piece of unwanted furniture. When I hesitated, he told me to add a zero to the alimony if the money wasn't enough. I realized in that moment that if he knew about the baby, he wouldn't love me; he would simply take my child and give it to Fiona to raise. I shoved the pregnancy test into my pocket, signed the papers with a shaking hand, and lied through my teeth. When my morning sickness hit, I slumped to the floor to hide the truth. "It's just cramps," I gasped, watching him recoil as if I were contagious. To make him stay away, I invented a man named Jack-a fake boyfriend who supposedly gave me the kindness Julian never could. Suddenly, the man who wanted me gone became a monster of possessiveness. He threatened to "bury" a man who didn't exist while leaving me humiliated at his family's dinner to rush to Fiona's side. I was so broken that I even ate a cake I was deathly allergic to, then had to refuse life-saving steroids at the hospital because they would harm the fetus. Julian thinks he's stalling the divorce for two months to protect the family's reputation for his father's Jubilee. He thinks he's keeping his "property" on a short leash until the press dies down. He has no idea I'm using those sixty days to build a fortress for my child. By the time he realizes the truth, I'll be gone, and the Sterling heir will be far beyond his reach.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.
