But a new threat has emerged, one that chills even the bravest souls: a relentless bloodsucker on the prowl. Meet Eloise Baker, a determined agent with a mission - uncover the identity of this ruthless predator and stop the gruesome reign of terror. Will their newfound attraction be their downfall, or can they defy the odds to save their kind and, just maybe, find love amidst the chaos?"

The Court of Blood and Night Chapter 1 To See or Not to See

Silence is the virtue of saints I have never claimed to be a saint.

Eloise

There was one thing about dreams that never sat right, the fact that they could paralyze you, binding you with imaginary ropes and chains. It was something El had always wondered about and as she dreamed stuck in the world of her mind's choosing,it was something she detested.

There was blood in this world, pints and pints of blood splattered over the floors like some horrible attempt at an art painting gone wrong. While there were no bodies she knew that this much blood could only have come from multiple individual, callously gutted and drained.

" There are things in this world El. Big bad wolves. Are you ready to face them El" a whispering voice asked, she didn't answer. This was not a game she wanted to play and if anyone wanted to speak to her then they'd be doing it to her face. There was sharp jarring laughter and then she woke. Her eyes flew wide open her iris's dilated, her breathing shallow and uneven. She rolled over and punched out the alarm clock by her bed, she didn't need the clock telling her she was late. She was damn aware of how late she was, sitting up she ran a palm over her face with a soft sigh, the communicator on her table beeped with incoming messages, work was calling and she had no time for unsettling dreams and time wasting nonsense.

She rose stripping off her clothes where she stood and strode naked to the bathroom. She turned on the shower and stood under it's spray of water, shuddering when it dropped onto her skin cold

" Stupid heater" she cursed, it was likely not the things fault. Manufacturers were far and few between and no matter how much political cronies said it the world hadn't really evolved much. Over half a millenia after the Decay. In the year 3024 when the world should have been ahead in scientific advancements and by those promises we should have been living on Mars and conquering the other planets. Yet here we were having been brought low to unreliable water heaters.

She walked out of the shower and pulled clothes out of her drawer and put them on. She walked towards her desk and picked her comm, the screen came on as she touched it a message from Dave highlighted at the top the read.

Come to the Updrift. We have a problem.

Sighing with regret, she picked her keys, leather jacket and ID tag and walked out the door. Nodding to Miss Porter the owner of the building where she was the only human who lives in a building of Others, she jogged down the stairs shrugging on her jacket. She reached the bus station, her bike was at the motor shop and she hadn't gotten time to get it back, she loved that bike, she'd saved for over a year to get it. In a world where one was always on a wait-list for electronic she'd had to wait six extra months. Climbing into the bus she pressed her ID tag against the sensor and found a seat, she pulled her communicator and browsed her mail. There were two emails from her boss at the practice one letting her know she would have to take the certified test in a few days and another asking her to submit her financial aid form. The drive to the Updrift took less than twenty minutes but in that time, a light rain had dotted the streets, the bus came into the station and she stood and urged herself off, jogging outbof the rain and into a shade, she stood straighter and opened her senses reaching out trying to sense Dave once she caught him she hurried off in his direction. The building that he supposedly was in was a run down slab but that was to be expected, the Updrift was one of the worst parts of Macadamia, she entered the building her nose wrinkling at the smell of decay

" Shit that's strong how are you hanging" she called out finding Dave in second. He stood in front of the dead, his nose wrinkled as well and she felt sorry for him, she wasn't a werewolf and the smell was horrible.

" I'm trying not to puke over evidence" he grimaced and she huffed, at 6"2, she stood over a feet and a half over Dave, but what he lacked in height he made up for in bulk of muscle that seemed to go on forever. Dave was handsome if you were into the pale hair blue eyes kind of thing but he was her coworker and she didn't screw where she ate

" What have we got" she asked bending to survey the body

" Male, dead about forty-eight hours by the smell" he muttered and she grinned accurate werewolf nostrils

" I can't tell without autopsy to confirm it but he seems to have been –drained" Dave answered hesitantly

" Drained huh" she murmured and opened her senses a little bit as a level 2 psyche she was a bit stronger than most. She opened herself to the thing around her breathing deeply so the memories didn't overwhelm her. Their victim had come in here to seek shelter from one of the abrupt rain showers, he'd leaned against the wall pulled a cigarette and lit it up, puffing the smoke for about twenty minutes before he froze at some sound only he could hear. He straightened and looked around calling out then he seemed to stiffen. And all of a sudden the memories disintegrated before her eyes. Eloise opened her eyes

" You see anything" Dave asked curiously

"Not who did it, whatever it was, was fast as a blur" She turned his head to the side and sighed

" Did you see that" she asked and he frowned

" what the fuck is that"

" I don't know, but whatever it is this can't be good news" she answered, rising

" When is the team coming"

" In thirty minutes"

" Well then we get to test your theory"

" Did you smell cigarettes, drugs" she asked and he nodded

" Cigarettes yeah. No drugs though, could have had a little alcohol"

" Well have to wait for the forensic, wherever the hell they are" she grouched.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."

"We're friends," I said, voice barely steady. Aaron's lips curled, slow and cruel. "No, we're not." "Friendship's too pure for this." His hand slid to my waist, hot and claiming as he yanked me flush against him. "Do friends kiss like this?" He kissed me. Hard. Possessive. "Or grab each other like this?" A squeeze to my ass. A gasp. "Or think filthy little thoughts?" His breath burned against my ear. "Touch themselves to it?" My cheeks flamed. My body betrayed me. "Stop lying, Venus." His voice was a growl. "I feel it. Every time I'm near you." I whispered, "But you don't even like me." His smile was pure sin. "I don't have to like you to fuck you." Then the offer: "Let's get it out of our system. No lies. No strings. Just truth." He grabbed my chin, eyes lit with hunger. "Say the word, princess." A whisper against my lips- "I'll ruin you." And God help me... I wanted him to. --------- Aaron Sinclair needs a bride to claim his inheritance. Venus Carter needs a miracle to save her dying mother. What begins as a cold contract marriage spirals into a dangerous game of buried trauma, stolen identities, and forbidden attachment. He's ruthless, closed off, and refuses to love. She's resilient, lost, and refuses to stay unloved. But when secrets unravel revealing a stolen childhood, a tragic past, and a vengeful stepmother, their fake marriage is the only thing standing between them and destruction. In a world ruled by power and silence, will love dare to speak first or break them both instead?

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

For three years, I was the perfect, invisible wife to Bart Brown. On our third anniversary, I stood in the kitchen for four hours, preparing his favorite meal with imported truffles, only to receive a cold text command. "Crysta fainted again. Get to the hospital. Now." My rare Rh-negative blood was the only thing the Brown family valued. Bart didn't want a wife; he wanted a walking blood bank for his "sick" best friend, Crysta. While I was fainting from chronic anemia, Crysta was smirking in her hospital bed, clutching Bart's hand and mocking my "peasant" lifestyle. Even his mother treated me like a servant, demanding I vacuum the floors after I'd already offered my veins for the hundredth time. When I finally reached my breaking point and signed the divorce papers, they didn't let me go quietly. They filed a false police report, accusing me of stealing a multi-million dollar diamond necklace just to watch me crawl. I didn't understand how a family could be so heartless. I had cooked their meals, cleaned their house, and literally bled for them, yet they were determined to ruin my life the moment I stopped being useful. Did they really think I was a nobody with nowhere to go? Standing outside the hospital with a bruised wrist and nothing to my name, I didn't cry. I simply took off my cheap wedding ring and dialed a secure line I hadn't touched since the day I married him. "It's me, Dad," I whispered as a fleet of black Maybachs rounded the corner. "The extraction is a go. I'm coming home."
