Chapter 1 Meeting Autumn

POV: Autumn

I am 25 years old; I am a mateless werewolf. I don't know if you know anything about werewolves or mates, but werewolves are normally mated at 17 years old. However, I haven't found my mate. I am the alpha's daughter of the Snow Dawn Pack. We reside in Helena, Montana, but the whole state is my dad's territory. Everyone keeps telling me my mate is out there, but I don't believe it, my mate probably got killed or is a rouge. Rouge is a wolf that either left the pack or got exiled for a crime they committed. Why they don't just kill them is beyond me. Once they are out of a pack, they become feral. They have no emotions, no remorse for any other being they kill. I guess I should introduce myself. I am Autumn. I was named after the season obviously; I have bright red hair with silver streaks. My eyes are emerald green with a silver swirl, which I'm told is very rare and only the most powerful wolves have silver in their eyes. My wolf is also rare, since I'm an alpha bloodline, my wolf is bigger than others, but my wolf is also bigger than my dad, the alpha, which doesn't happen. The alpha is always the biggest wolf. My wolf is silver with bright red tips. She has, of course, silver eyes. Her name is Athena. Having a wolf is like having someone else inside your head who can talk to you.

"Autumn! Wake up! AUTUMN! WAKE UP!" my mom, Sarah, yelled at me. I pulled my blanket over my head. Next thing I know, I have cold water over my head.

"MOOOMMMM! What the hell!" I yelled.

"You need to get up. It's almost noon!" Mom yelled back. I rolled my eyes.

"Mom, I did the night patrol. I didn't get in till six-thirty this morning. You saw me at breakfast at seven! I just want to sleep," I groaned.

"Autumn, you have a responsibility to do. You need to get up, get dressed, and get to the training field. You have warriors that need training," mom reminded me.

"Mom, can't you get someone else to train today? I have barely slept all week between night patrols and the training. I just want to relax and sleep in, have Darren do it. He is the future alpha after all," I replied.

"Autumn Dawn! You know your brother has way more responsibilities than you. He is training to be the alpha; he must be everywhere your dad is. Every meeting. Every late night. We gave you this responsibility because you can handle it," mom set me straight. Darren is my younger brother, who is going to be the alpha, since she-wolves can't be alphas, only men. Darren is only 18. He found his mate, Brittany, on the day he turned 17. Lucky him. I got up, got dressed in black leggings and a sports bra and headed out of the pack house to the training field.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.
