Chapter 1 Blooming Roses

Chapter 1

I was seventeen when I got to the University, my parents had wanted me to stay on campus, but I tried hard to convince them on the dirty and notorious girls in the hostel.

After so much back and forth, I ended at the hostel. I guess they won.

I made some crazy friends who showed me the crazy and exciting side of the university walls, the most influential was Fumi, 'Biggy' as she is referred to, because of her big stature. A lovely and caring young lady, she acted the big sister to all of us in the unit.

My block was block 15. We call it the 'CREEKs' because of its rustiness and the crazy girls in the block. Every weekend the girls throw party to celebrate one thing or the other.

Second semester was already rounding up and exam time table was out. Everybody got busy and jollification was suspended, at least after the exams. Exams came and went.

The results were out and everybody was glad with the outcome. We played and we got busy when it was time, during our last year in the university things had begun to change. The bond we use to have had begun to wane.

Worst of all was the fact that we lived on different campuses, we only met during classes or during night readings.

Sometimes you just meet yourselves on the way and just say 'hi'. Other times we met when there is a celebration somewhere.

We knew we were growing and change was certain to come in many forms. There was no ill- feelings of any sought.

We are adults hence we all understood that. During our last year in school, we had more fun and less study. We had our projects going on and the thought of life after university keeps coming to mind.

We just wanted to finish and face whatever challenge awaited us.

During this period going home for a short break was not on anyone's agenda. I wanted to enjoy the moment as best as I could. I made new crazy friends who went to night clubs on weekends and sometimes I went with them to town to have fun with the big city people.

Most times I felt scared something could happen and my parents will hear about it and then boom! In all the fun I still didn't forget where I was coming from

My heart skips each time this thought comes to my mind. If anything happens to me by my own fault, it will break my mother's heart. This got me more scared.

As I enjoyed life, I still tried my best to be careful not to go pass my shadow.

I knew how my parents have had to work day and night to making sure I and my siblings went to school and have everything we needed.

As the only girl child, it would be unheard of to hear I am the lost child who brought shame to her parents.

This thinking haunted me in my sleep every day.
