Chapter 1 Taking sides

WRITER POV

Freya Johnson heading back home from school with her eyes fixed on her phone as she scroll through her Instagram app.

-"Freya, you definitely don't get tired of being the first. You were chosen once again. I'm so jealous of you baby girl. I feel so good having a bestie like you" Michelle said in her video with Freda next to her in the classroom. -

"Michelle even uploaded it on her Instagram account. Mtcheww! What a showoff" Freya hissed and threw her phone at the other side of seat with her hands crossed on her chest and her eyes were beginning to get crowded with tears.

"Sir, please stop the car!" Freya said in a shaky tone and the driver glanced at her from the view mirror.

"But miss Freya,..." The driver cut in and Freya removed her seatbelt.

"I said stop the car! It's an order!" Freya yelled and the driver stepped on the brakes immediately.

Freya got down from the car, leaving her schoolbag in the car.

She boast into tears on getting out.

"Not again!" Freya screamed in tears as she covered her face with her palms.

I can't believe I fell behind in my grades again. Freda came first once again. Freya said in her head sobbing heavily.

Her driver came out of the car and walked to her.

"Miss, please you shouldn't be like on the roadside. Your dad just called, he said I should bring you home immediately" The driver said politely and Freya glared at him with her red eyes.

"Do you only take orders from my dad? Why are you all getting on my nerve!" Freya barked and wiped off her tears angrily then she got back into the car.

The driver handed her some tissues when he got into the car.

"Mind your own business and focus on your driving" Freya said rudely as her tears kept rolling down her cheeks.

Freya and Freda are only eighteen but they've already gotten used to the spirit of challenging and rewarding experience.

The twins are like fire and ice, one wants to rule and be in control and the other wants to be acknowledged and given a chance to prove her worth.

*** THE JOHNSON'S BUILDING ***

The whole family are all seated at the sitting room.

"Maria, you should get Freda something relaxing to take. My daughter made me proud once again" Mr Johnson instructed grinning from ear to ear.

"Come on, dad, if you keep on doing this, I might end up being really spoilt. Anyways thanks for the idea dad" Freda smiled.

"Come sit with daddy" Mr Johnson (Gabriel) said spreading his arms open and Freda sat next to him on same couch.

"Honey, you should let her sit with me as well. The news about Freda's grades already got into the ministers ladies group on WhatsApp. It was as if they were all waiting for it" Mrs Johnson (Nkem) said excitedly.

"Of course, everyone expected it. They've made Freda their role model. They're probably lashing it out on their kids again. I'm so proud of you, dear" Gabriel said with a smile and just then Freda's phone started ringing.

"Excuse me dad but I have to take this call. It's a call from Jeff" Freda informed before standing up.

"Go ahead dear" Gabriel said and Freda went upstairs.

"It would be perfect if Freda and Jeff take their friendship to the next level then I will get a bit closer with minister Olu" Gabriel said calmly.

"You're sounding selfish again. You shouldn't force Freda into doing anything she doesn't want and Jeff doesn't seem to show much interest of that aspect on Freda but on Freya instead" Nkem said and Gabriel glared at her.

"Don't you dare utter such rubbish again. Why would you even get such a thought in your head in the first place? If Freya was that good at attracting boys then She should put much of that energy on her studies! What rubbish!" Gabriel fired and just then Freya sluggishly walked in.

Gabriel glared at her from where he was seated.

"Good afternoon dad and mum" Freya greeted avoiding eye contact with them.

"What's so good about the afternoon? Although something good happened and at the same time, something terrible happened. How dare you Freya?" Gabriel barked and he stood up angrily.

"I'm so sorry dad, I have no idea how it happened. I tried everything in my power to..." Freya couldn't complete her statement when Gabriel pushed the centre table angrily.

"Everything in your power? Do you have any idea what that statement means? Freya, do you?" Gabriel yelled and Freya flinched in fear.

"I do everything in my power to send you and your sister to one of the best schools here in Abuja, I do everything in my power to give you the best life and luxury so you don't lack anything. That's what doing everything in your power means! You promised me you would do better this term but what the hell? Instead of going up, you're falling behind instead and you've got the nerve to tell me you did everything in your power. You're nothing like your sister, I would love it if you anything close to Freda" Gabriel yelled and tears roll down Freya's eyes.

"Honey, please you need to calm down a little" Nkem said and Gabriel glared at her.

"Calm down? Am I supposed to be calm right now? Nkem I'm burning my hard-earned money here, do you still think I should be calm after seeing her grades fall behind for the term. You're not talking to your daughter and that's why I keep burning money. She takes after you and that's why she can't get anything into that brain of hers" Gabriel yelled and Nkem frowned.

"In situations like this, you only put the blame on me. If you were doing your best like you said then she wouldn't be falling behind in her studies" Nkem quarrelled.

"The both of you just stop it. You're fighting again, fine I will try my best next time and I'm sorry. Don't stir up fire just because of my grades. I will study harder" Freda half yelled then ran to the stairs.

"Freya get back here! Not just study harder, you should be like your sister as well!" Gabriel yelled but Freya went upstairs angrily.

"Freya, if you want to fail can you please not make our parents quarrel over it over and over again. Aren't you tired of that?" Freda said sarcastically and Freya glared at her.

"You sound like failing is a crime and I came out fourth for your information and next time, mind own your business!" Freya said angrily then brushed Freda's shoulders before leaving for her bedroom.

FREDA'S POV•••••

I was about heading to Freya's room after her statement but Michelle's call came in through my phone.

"Why are they all making a fuss about it? It's not like this is the first time, I'm leading the class" I said as I rolled my eyes and head to my bedroom.

"Yes, Michelle. What'sup?" I asked after taking the call.

"Freda, how come you didn't inform me that Jeff will be throwing a weekend party at his place?" Michelle said excitedly over the phone.

"I just got informed now. Jeff called me himself to invite me and that's how I found out" I said calmly as I sat down on my favourite soft couch.

"What! Jeff told you himself? Girl, I think that dude is head over heels for you? He's definitely giving you a green flag" Michelle said and I smiled widely.

"Oh, stop saying things like that Michelle. Jeff doesn't really show such interest and moreover, he's only good-looking and popular but not that much of a bookworm. I don't think having such thought for him is advisable and I've got a lot on my plate already" I said sharply.

"What are you saying Freda? Why are you sounding like some graduate who's looking up for a job interview. You're just a secondary school girl, still living under her parents so why stress yourself so much. It's not like I'm making things up, it's obvious Jeff likes you. Just don't play hard to get when he asks you out this weekend okay" Michelle said and I got mesmerized on her words.

"Hello Freda, are you there?" Michelle snapped me out of my thoughts.

"Just stop it Michelle and don't go around spreading such rumors okay. It's not good for my image" I lied.

FREYA'S POV••••

I was laying on my bed tiredly watching some comedy skit on my phone with my headphone on when Jeff's call pop out of nowhere.

"Mtcheww! I've got better things to do than take your call. Go to hell" I hissed and cut his call immediately without having a second thought about it.

Swiftly a message popped up on my phone screen.

("Freya, please can you take my call, I'm on my knees right now. It's really important") Jeff texted and I scoffed at the message.

He's so tacky. I cursed in my head as I ignored his message and his call came in again.

"What! What do you want from me? Why are you disturbing me?" I yelled over the phone after taking his call.

"Freya, you're so feisty and for some weird reasons why does it feel like I'm the only one you behave this way towards. Do you perhaps have feelings for me?" He teased and I rolled my eyes.

"Yeah, I think I'm so madly in love with you. Can you get out of my phone now!" I said sarcastically.

"Please don't hang up yet. I haven't tell you the reason why I called"

"Make it snappy" I said.

"Freya, I'm throwing a party this weekend at my house, I would love it if you show up"

"Never, don't even think about it" I said swiftly.

"Well, don't you want to meet with my friend's brother who owns a music studio" He tempted and I sat up immediately.

"Music studio?" I asked curiously and just then dad barged into my room and snatched my cellphone and headphone.

"Dad!" I called out with a frown.

"No phones for you till the weekend is over and I'm taking your laptop and tablet with me as well. You've been grounded from using phones. I thought falling behind your grades was all, I can't believe you refused to attend or engage in any activities in school"

"Dad, today's just Wednesday, we're not even close to weekend yet and I couldn't participate because I know nothing about science and I can't force myself to like it. I want to be an art student, dad" I said almost in tears.

"Shut it because I really don't care. All I want is for you to be like Freda, you should learn to be like your sister so don't let me force you" Dad said angrily then he grabbed my tablet and laptop from my reading table.

Dad went out of my room and shut the door.

"This is wrong! These all started with our date of birth!" I screamed angrily.

"Mum, why did you give birth to me on the 1st of January and Freda on the 31 of December. Why?" I screamed and dad opened my door.

"Shut up and read your books" Dad said coldly as he glared at me.

I received a pornographic video. "Do you like this?" The man speaking in the video is my husband, Mark, whom I haven't seen for several months. He is naked, his shirt and pants scattered on the ground, thrusting forcefully on a woman whose face I can't see, her plump and round breasts bouncing vigorously. I can clearly hear the slapping sounds in the video, mixed with lustful moans and grunts. "Yes, yes, fuck me hard, baby," the woman screams ecstatically in response. "You naughty girl!" Mark stands up and flips her over, slapping her buttocks as he speaks. "Stick your ass up!" The woman giggles, turns around, sways her buttocks, and kneels on the bed. I feel like someone has poured a bucket of ice water on my head. It's bad enough that my husband is having an affair, but what's worse is that the other woman is my own sister, Bella. ************************************************************************************************************************ “I want to get a divorce, Mark,” I repeated myself in case he didn't hear me the first time—even though I knew he'd heard me clearly. He stared at me with a frown before answering coldly, "It's not up to you! I'm very busy, don't waste my time with such boring topics, or try to attract my attention!" The last thing I was going to do was argue or bicker with him. "I will have the lawyer send you the divorce agreement," was all I said, as calmly as I could muster. He didn't even say another word after that and just went through the door he'd been standing in front of, slamming it harshly behind him. My eyes lingered on the knob of the door a bit absentmindedly before I pulled the wedding ring off my finger and placed it on the table. I grabbed my suitcase, which I'd already had my things packed in and headed out of the house.
