Nothing would have prepared Rhiannon Sander for what she was about to witness on that fateful night. "Why are you asking me why? Isn't it obvious or should I tell you?" Kaylee asked. Her stepsister's word hit her like a brick making her world spin in circles, unable to believe her eyes as she tasted the face of betrayal from the two closest people in her life. she stared up at her fiancées face, silently hoping he'd step up to her and tell her all this was all but a prank. He not only did not even look at her but also sneered and showed him his true face. They locked her up in the house and set it on fire. "Help me..." came the faint whisper as she looked up at the man towering above her. "Anyt... I'll give anything in return...please..." She passed out. "Sir, what should we do?" the driver asked. The man who had been seated at the back seat got out of the car and walked towards her. "Don't regret what you have said when you wake up!" Rhiannon Sander had to keep her word as she vowed to make the scumbags regret everything they did to her!

Chapter 1 Betrayal

Sitting on her bed which was covered in green bed covers, she felt that she was lucky. Even though her father didn't love her and her grandparents were gone, she had her stepsister and fiancée who loved her deeply. She vowed that she would return their gratitude one way or another.

Rhiannon stood up as a thought flashed in her mind making her walk to her closet while humming to choose the perfect outfit.

After scanning her dresses one after another, she picked a green dress since green was Aaron's favorite, and had always said that she looked more beautiful in it.

"Ma'am, are you going out?" Mary, the housekeeper and the one who took care of her after her mother's death asked. To her, Mary was like the second mother whom she wished for. Always caring, and kind and made sure that she never slept with an empty stomach even when she was been punished.

"Yes, Mary. I am going to surprise Aaron," the lady said with a charming smile on her face.

Looking at the young mistress smiling, the old woman felt conflicted and in pain. She wondered when her girl would stop being naive.

"Are you going to their house?"

"No, I bought him an apartment in the city that is close to the company," she said.

With a sigh, Mary said, "Rhiannon, how many times have I told you that you shouldn't waste your money on that boy? Don't they have money that he can spend? When will you ever stop being so generous?"

Hearing this topic once more was what Rhiannon always avoided. She never understood why Mary was against her relationship with Aaron. There were times she always wanted to say that the old lady was just jealous, but she discarded the thought immediately cause she never saw any reason for the old woman to be.

"Mary, not again please, he is my fiancée. We both know that even if you disapprove of it, the marriage contract was signed been the two families and there is nothing you can do," she said softly.

"But that's a lie. When your mother was still alive, she refused to sign the contract stating that you will get married to the man whom you love," Mary said as she didn't want to give up. She knew that she had to convince Rhiannon to break off the engagement with that man now that she had agreed to have this topic.

"Furthermore, I love him and want to spend my entire life with him. Haven't you said that that was Mom's wish and reason not to sign the contract? I love him so I can go ahead. Mary, I will be back in the evening," she said as she peeked the old woman on her cheek before leaving the house.

After some minutes of driving, she arrived at the apartment, she found that it was open and was slightly shocked since she thought that she would be alone and prepare meals for Aaron before he got out of work.

Walking inside the house, she heard strange voices coming from the bedroom, and out of curiosity, she walked in the direction.

"Am I sweeter than Rhiannon?" she heard a voice that was so familiar to her ask.

"Baby, what are you asking? How can I fuck that disgusting woman? I don't even love her. We both know that am only with her because of her money," she heard her fiancée answer. That was more shocking than anything else.

Without even thinking twice, she opened the door making the two people who were naked lying on the bed jump out of fear and shock. After it realized who it was, the woman walked towards her and slapped her twice before she recovered from the shock that she was betrayed by the people who were the closest to her.

"Why?" she asked in disbelief.

"Why are you asking me why? Isn't it obvious or should I tell you?" her sister asked without being guilty of what she had done.

"Stop wasting time talking to her, don't we have what we wanted from her in the first place? It's high time she dies," the man said.

She looked at them in disbelief. One was her stepsister whom she loved and shared everything with while the other one was her fiancée whom she had loved for more than seven years. She wondered what she had done to be hated like this by her closest friends.

"No, she can't die yet, how then will we get the inheritance her mother left behind for her? First, let us force her to take the drink so that she can be weak," her sister stated.

"Why are you doing all this?" she forced herself to ask after swallowing the cold liquid that was forced into her mouth and was burning her throat

Laughing like a lunatic, Kaylee, her stepsister looked at her with mocking eyes, "I will tell you. I am just an illegitimate daughter unlike you who is the legitimate daughter. People praise you for your beauty, wisdom, and how you perform well. I always thought that I would take over the company since I am Dad's favorite, but no, to my utter surprise, Grandpa had never given Dad his shares. He left thirty percent to you making you the majority shareholder when you combined with the other thirty percent shares which belonged to your dead mother. No one has ever noticed me, even those who befriended me always talk behind my back about how I am not a legitimate daughter of any affluent family. Honey, I think you are right, dad told me that as long she is gone, all the shares grandpa left will just belong to the family which means they will be mine, there is no reason for us to keep her," she said.

"What about the inheritance you just said belonged to her left behind by Sabrina?" Aaron asked full of curiosity and his eyes were full of greed.

"I just heard Dad saying but I don't know anything about it but I don't think that they are a lot," Kaylee said as she hugged Aaron.

"Okay then. What should we do to her?" he asked as he kissed his girlfriend.

Rhiannon silently stared at them as they played the lovey-dovey before her. She never knew that they were just after her money, closing her eyes, she vowed that if she survived, she would make them pay for everything they had done to her and get everything they did.

"Why don't we burn the house with her in it?" she heard as they planned how to kill her. She knew that even if she had nothing anymore to live for since her mother and grandparents were dead, she didn't want to let the evil people win the battle. She remembered her mother's last words and that was enough to make her strong once more and motivate her.

After some minutes, she started choking cause of the smoke that filled the room. She opened her eyes and saw that the fire was igniting and becoming large as time passed by.

Dragging her tired and weak body out of the room, she scanned her surroundings to find any loophole that would enable her to escape.

...

Later on:

She saw a car moving fast on the empty road and she moved forward. Her mission, succeeding, the driver got out of the vehicle and said, "Save please, take me to the hospital and I will pay you later."

With that, she passed out.

I sat on the cold tile floor of our Upper East Side penthouse, staring at the two pink lines until my vision blurred. After ten years of loving Julian Sterling and three years of a hollow marriage, I finally had the one thing that could bridge the distance between us. I was pregnant. But Julian didn't come home with flowers for our anniversary. He tossed a thick manila envelope onto the marble coffee table with a heavy thud. Fiona, the woman he'd truly loved for years, was back in New York, and he told me our "business deal" was officially over. "Sign it," He said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He looked at me with the cold detachment of a man selling a piece of unwanted furniture. When I hesitated, he told me to add a zero to the alimony if the money wasn't enough. I realized in that moment that if he knew about the baby, he wouldn't love me; he would simply take my child and give it to Fiona to raise. I shoved the pregnancy test into my pocket, signed the papers with a shaking hand, and lied through my teeth. When my morning sickness hit, I slumped to the floor to hide the truth. "It's just cramps," I gasped, watching him recoil as if I were contagious. To make him stay away, I invented a man named Jack-a fake boyfriend who supposedly gave me the kindness Julian never could. Suddenly, the man who wanted me gone became a monster of possessiveness. He threatened to "bury" a man who didn't exist while leaving me humiliated at his family's dinner to rush to Fiona's side. I was so broken that I even ate a cake I was deathly allergic to, then had to refuse life-saving steroids at the hospital because they would harm the fetus. Julian thinks he's stalling the divorce for two months to protect the family's reputation for his father's Jubilee. He thinks he's keeping his "property" on a short leash until the press dies down. He has no idea I'm using those sixty days to build a fortress for my child. By the time he realizes the truth, I'll be gone, and the Sterling heir will be far beyond his reach.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I was sitting in the Presidential Suite of The Pierre, wearing a Vera Wang gown worth more than most people earn in a decade. It was supposed to be the wedding of the century, the final move to merge two of Manhattan's most powerful empires. Then my phone buzzed. It was an Instagram Story from my fiancé, Jameson. He was at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris with a caption that read: "Fuck the chains. Chasing freedom." He hadn't just gotten cold feet; he had abandoned me at the altar to run across the world. My father didn't come in to comfort me. He burst through the door roaring about a lost acquisition deal, telling me the Holland Group would strip our family for parts if the ceremony didn't happen by noon. My stepmother wailed about us becoming the laughingstock of the Upper East Side. The Holland PR director even suggested I fake a "panic attack" to make myself look weak and sympathetic to save their stock price. Then Jameson’s sleazy cousin, Pierce, walked in with a lopsided grin, offering to "step in" and marry me just to get his hands on my assets. I looked at them and realized I wasn't a daughter or a bride to anyone in that room. I was a failed asset, a bouncing check, a girl whose own father told her to go to Paris and "beg" the man who had just publicly humiliated her. The girl who wanted to be loved died in that mirror. I realized that if I was going to be sold to save a merger, I was going to sell myself to the one who actually controlled the money. I marched past my parents and walked straight into the VIP holding room. I looked the most powerful man in the room—Jameson’s cold, ruthless uncle, Fletcher Holland—dead in the eye and threw the iPad on the table. "Jameson is gone," I said, my voice as hard as stone. "Marry me instead."
