Chapter 1 Eighteen

"It's my birthday!!!" The young lady stood on the seat cushion with a bottle of wine in her hand, raised to the sky as she screamed the words with the fullest form of ecstasy, looking down at the people who surrounded her as she laughed out wildly at the top of her voice.

The crowd around her responded loudly with a loud cheer as they raised their glasses and bottles in the air, and at the same time, the volume of the song which played behind was increased to the fullest, and each man shook their bodies and danced in accordance with the rhythm of the song.

But there was none who expressed so much excitement like the one who had screamed the words and the purpose of the party. Her name was Elissa, tall and slender with a light skin and a wide smile which showed off her perfectly whitened dentition and the dimple which rested on her right cheek.

She had on a peach dress that showed off her shoulders and had a bit of cleavage, and whose length stopped around her thighs and her heels which elevated her in height above others. Her darkened hair which was lengthy enough to reach her waist was shortened as it was styled into a ponytail, and curled upwards into a bun that rested on the back of her head.

She had just turned eighteen years of age, and with the knowledge of the freedom that accompanied that age, her first thought of activating her adulthood was directed into taking a shot from an alcoholic wine which her parents had always restricted her from doing.

Gratefully, they weren't there, and those who surrounded her to celebrate had their voices in unison, pressing her to taking the shot of vodka which was placed on the table before her.

"Take the shot! Take the shot!! Take the shot!!!" The people around her cheered in unison as a random man placed a shot glass on the table and filled it to the brim.

She looked at each of them, nodding her head with a smile seated on her face as though she was being strengthened by their words. She raised the glass high in the sky, raising the loudness of the cheer before she gulped down the drink.

She could overhear the chewing and clapping and laughter of the crowd after she had gulped down the drink, but she struggled with the effect of the drink as she grinned audibly and hissed, shaking her head to ease off the effect on her.

The crowd had dispersed from her, leaving her with another lady who sat without a smile on her face, taking calm and slow sips from the glass of wine which she held in her hand, and having her attention completely drawn away by something she sighted at a far distance, and vividly lost in her thoughts.

"Martha!" Elissa called out to her with a slight push of her elbow against her body, disrupting her train of thoughts.

"What?" The other answered with an expression on her face which translated to not knowing what was occurring at the moment.

"Where's the fun and excitement you promised to bring along to the club with me?" Elissa asked with a slightly squeezed face.

The other was Elissa's best friend for as long as they could both remember, and she had hoped that Martha would create a vibe that would cause the party to even get better than she imagined.

"I don't know?" She shrugged her shoulders. "I lost that feeling" she responded again.

"Martha, it's my birthday. The least you could have done would be to bring a gift for me, or at least, make me feel like this..." She raised her hands in the air, pointing towards the entire club which seemed rowdy and busy with people

"...was not a mistake" Elissa said again

As she uttered those words, a random man had passed by with a bouquet of flowers in his hands, gesturing with a slight bow as he handed the flowers to her with a smile seated on his face as he said to her, "Happy Birthday!"

"Oh, thank you...!" She grabbed the bouquet and inhaled from the roses which were neatly and beautifully packed. She wore a wide smile on her face before she turned towards Martha and said to her again, "Like this...!"

"I'm happy for you, Elissa. You know that. There's no way I'm going to ruin your day" Martha said wholeheartedly. Her thoughts were completely occupied with things which seemed to have troubled her, things she couldn't just utter out in a celebration as special as Elissa's.

"Fine, have a drink with me.!" Elissa said as she grabbed a bottle of wine which was seated on the table.

"Is that alcoholic?" Martha asked.

"You scared of alcohol?" Elissa asked sarcastically. She chuckled at the expression which was seated on Martha's face, the fear that gripped her as though there was something eerie about the drink which she intended to take.

"I know it's your birthday, but I think it's best you take it easy. Stepping into adulthood comes with more responsibilities than all of these. It's best we take it easy before we make the wrong choices" Martha said.

The other groaned with her eyes rolled, pouring the drink into the glasses without paying attention to the words which her friend uttered.

"Let your hair down for a moment, Martha..." Elissa said the words as she handed over the drink to her friend.

"Let me worry around the responsibilities later. For now, I need to enjoy and bask in the goodness of this new age" Elissa said again. Martha got the drink from her friend's hand, and while she watched as the other gulped down the drink without a second thought, she slowly gulped down hers, and rejected another offer made by Elissa.

"Who is that?" Elissa said a few seconds later as soon as her eyes fell on a certain figure at the other end. Her eyes were widened at the sight of a man whose beauty had caught all of her attention, one which had caused her to be frozen in time.
