Unforeseen Chemistry Chapter 1 Getting Ready for my First Interview

Angela Anderson, despite what happened in the past has managed to put it behind her and completed her college education with good grades. Ten years after the tragic incident which happened on her birthday, she was now ready for the real world. With the help of her father, Mr Anderson, Angela was able to apply for a position in a well-known prestigious trillion-dollar company called Diamond Corporation. She had been called for an interview and she prepared herself for it very excited. Angela appeared to have pushed everything behind her growing up and is now focused on her future.

The day for the interview finally came and Angela got ready for it. She put on a simple white blouse over a black skirt and completed her dressing with a simple necklace, small earrings and black full shoes with a 2-inch block heel. She held her hair up in a bun and checked herself out in the mirror after applying some lip gloss on her dry lips. Satisfied with her appearance, she exited her bedroom and went down the stairs to bid her mother goodbye before leaving for Diamond Corporation.

"Mum, I am leaving for the interview," Angela said kissing Mrs Anderson on the cheek.

"I wish you the best. Your father will drop you off," Mrs Anderson said and immediately Mr Anderson joined the two in the kitchen, casually dressed.

"You don't have to Dad. I can always get the bus," Angela said. "I am not a little girl anymore," she added drawing Mr and Mrs Anderson's attention to herself that she was all grown.

"Don't be silly. It is your first interview and I need to be there. Subsequently, you can do the bus," Mr Anderson said and greeted his wife with a kiss on the cheek making her smile.

"Hmm, I love everything about this family except this old tradition of being present at the first of everything," Angela said throwing her hands in the air as she walked towards the main door. "At this rate, I guess you will drop me off at my boyfriend's on my first visit. At my husband's, when I'm moving in for the first time," she added.

"That wouldn't be a bad idea. That way I will know you are safe at all times," Mr Anderson said as they walked out the front door.

"Are you going to be present when I decided to lose my virginity to my husband?" Angela asked standing next to the co-driver seat door.

"Hmmm, that, I don't want to be present," Mr Anderson said after pretending to be thinking through her statement making Angela laugh.

"I wouldn't mind dropping you off at the hospital for your first pregnancy test, first antenatal check and first birth," Mr Anderson said as they both got into the car and Angela shook her head in disbelief while smiling.

"Someday when you start your family, you will have a tradition of your own when the little angels start coming in. It would be your way of ensuring your family is safe always," Mr Anderson said and Angela smiled.

"I love you, Dad," Angela said and hugged Mr Anderson behind the wheel.

"I love you too kiddo," Mr Anderson said hugging her back. "Now let's go and pass that interview," he added pulling away from the hug and bringing the car engine to life.

The car drove out of the compound and headed for the company. Mr Anderson decided to ensure Angela was well prepared for her interview so he threw a couple of questions at her to answer to help her build her confidence for the interview. Angela did her best to answer them all.

"You will do fine. Just relax. Pay attention to the questions, and answer them to the best of your knowledge. Remember, always mention your skills in your answer and don't forget to add how that will benefit the company," Mr Anderson advised and the car came to a stop.

Angela stuck her head out and stared at the entrance of the company with the tight security. She moved her gaze beyond the gate and, sitting inside a compound surrounded by tall walls, was a towel with Diamond Corporation bolding inscribed at the top.

"Oh God help me," Angela whispered on her lips staring at the giant building.

"You will be fine. Just believe in yourself," Mr Anderson encouraged and Angela hugged him one more time with a smile before getting down from the car.

She held the strap of her handbag and walked towards the gate after taking in a deep breath. She looked back at her father who was driving away and waved him before turning her gaze back to the main gate.

"Who are you and what do you want?" the security man asked after Angela confirmed she wasn't an employee.

"Angela Anderson is my name. I am here for an interview," Angela replied staring at the two men who looked like one wrong word from her and they would have her arrested.

"Rico, give her the visitor card and scan her in," the man said in a deep voice and Angela gulped looking at the huge man with a world-built body.

Another man issued Angela with an electronic card with Visitor writing on it and Angela was given something like a pad to sign and she did. She was directed to the reception. Angela walked into the compound and soon entered the reception.

"Good morning," Angela began and the receptionist spoke.

"You are welcome to Diamond Corporation, Angela. Kindly walk down this hall and make yourself comfortable in the waiting area. You will be called," she said with professionalism and her smile was on point.

"Thank you," Angela acknowledged wondering how she knew her name.

The receptionist was dressed in a suit. She had on light make-up and looked like she was going to deliver a speech at an international programme. Angela suddenly felt out of place with her dressing but she still headed in the direction the receptionist had shown her.

When Angela got to the place, she pushed and walked through a door in front of her, and she realized it was a waiting room just like the receptionist had told her. Other applicants were waiting to be interviewed. They were all dressed in fine suits and the ladies had on a full make-up. It looks like Angela was the only one who didn't get the memo on the wearing of a suit and makeup. The ladies appeared to be wearing shoes with long pencil heels which ranged between five-inch and seven-inch. Angela looked at her two-inch block heel and felt odd.

She greeted the other applicants with a smile before taking her seat even though she was beginning to feel awkward looking at everyone's appearance and comparing it to hers. She was not poorly dressed but her dressing appeared too casual looking at the sophisticated dresses of all the applicants. Angela focused her gaze on the file in her hand.

The room was very spacious and the were two doors facing each other. One door was inside the room and the other other was the room exit door. They were all sitting in a padded single but were linked to each other in an L-shape.

The inner door opened, and a woman entered the waiting area from an inner room. She wasn't in a suit, but she wore an expensive close-fitting grey office dress with a belt around the waist. She was standing in seven-inch heels and her hair was neatly styled.

"Greetings to you all," she greeted, standing in the middle facing the applicants boldly. "I am Susan," she introduced. "I know you are all here for the position of a secretary. We only need one person, and we will be arriving at the decision today," she said.

Angela stared at the lady as she spoke. She had such a beautiful smile plastered on her face and her make-up was perfect. Angela only applied lip gloss, a pencil and eyeliner. Angela started feeling she had failed the interview before it even began. She didn't belong to the class of people sitting in the room.

"Give your best and remember everything counts," Susan said.

Her statement made Angela lose all her hope, but she remained seated.

"With that said, the first person, please come with me," Susan said, and the first applicant in the queue stood up and followed her in.

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I’ve returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders—the man I was told was a crippled recluse—intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I’d cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent—the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower’s security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy—Archibald’s secret son—wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald’s face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

Rain hammered against the asphalt as my sedan spun violently into the guardrail on the I-95. Blood trickled down my temple, stinging my eyes, while the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers mocked my panic. Trembling, I dialed my husband, Clive. His executive assistant answered instead, his voice professional and utterly cold. "Mr. Wilson says to stop the theatrics. He said, and I quote, 'Hang up. Tell her I don’t have time for her emotional blackmail tonight.'" The line went dead while I was still trapped in the wreckage. At the hospital, I watched the news footage of Clive wrapping his jacket around his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, Angelena, shielding her from the storm I was currently bleeding in. When I returned to our penthouse, I found a prenatal ultrasound in his suit pocket, dated the day he claimed to be on a business trip. Instead of an apology, Clive met me with a sneer. He told me I was nothing but an "expensive decoration" his father bought to make him look stable. He froze my bank accounts and cut off my cards, waiting for the hunger to drive me back to his feet. I stared at the man I had loved for four years, realizing he didn't just want a wife; he wanted a prop he could switch off. He thought he could starve me into submission while he played father to another woman's child. But Clive forgot one thing. Before I was his trophy wife, I was Starfall—the legendary voice actress who vanished at the height of her fame. "I'm not jealous, Clive. I'm done." I grabbed my old microphone and walked out. I’m not just leaving him; I’m taking the lead role in the biggest saga in Hollywood—the one Angelena is desperate for. This time, the "decoration" is going to burn his world down.

The heavy thud of the release stamp was the only goodbye I got from the warden after five years in federal prison. I stepped out into the blinding sun, expecting the same flash of paparazzi bulbs that had seen me dragged away in handcuffs, but there was only a single black limousine idling on the shoulder of the road. Inside sat my mother and sister, clutching champagne and looking at my frayed coat with pure disgust. They didn't offer a welcome home; instead, they tossed a thick legal document onto the table and told me I was dead to the city. "Gavin and I are getting engaged," my sister Mia sneered, flicking a credit card at me like I was a stray dog. "He doesn't need a convict ex-fiancée hanging around." Even after I saved their lives from an armed kidnapping attempt by ramming the attackers off the road, they rewarded me by leaving me stranded in the dirt. When I finally ran into Gavin, the man who had framed me, he pinned me against a wall and threatened to send me back to a cell if I ever dared to show my face at their wedding. They had stolen my biotech research, ruined my name, and let me rot for half a decade while they lived off my brilliance. They thought they had broken me, leaving me with nothing but an expired chapstick and a few old photos in a plastic bag. What they didn't know was that I had spent those five years becoming "Dr. X," a shadow consultant with five hundred million dollars in crypto and a secret that would bring the city to its knees. I wasn't just a victim anymore; I was a weapon, and I was pregnant with the heir they thought they had erased. I walked into the Melton estate and made an offer to the most powerful man in New York. "I'll save your grandfather's life," I told Horatio Melton, staring him down. "But the price is your last name. I'm taking back what's mine, and I'm starting with the man who thinks he's marrying my sister."
