Chapter 1

Davina Pov.

Breakups weren't a strange and heart-wrenching feeling anymore; they were my new normal, thanks to Vincent, my on-again, off-again boyfriend from college.

I'd lost count of how many times we'd broken up, and it had become a casual feeling to just walk away from the one you love. But today, I wished he had done it over the phone.

Bringing me my favorite diner and having my best meal served, only to break up with me, was absolute torture. Especially since I had no one at home to console me or tell me everything would be alright.

"Don't look so forlorn, Davina. I'm doing this for your happiness," he said, his voice laced with insincerity. "I don't want to hurt your feelings more than I already have. This job is eating so much of my time. You deserve someone who has time for you. I'm obviously not that candidate."

I slipped a bored look out of my upright expression. "Really, Vincent? You've made this speech countless times. How long do we have to keep going on and off?" I paused, my voice firm. "You know, I'm beginning to think you're taking my love for you for granted."

I flagged down a waiter, requesting a champagne, obviously on his bill, not mine. "But you've barely touched your meal and the wine," the waiter protested politely, but Vincent glared at him. "Is that how you do things here? Questioning your customers?"

"You don't have to pretend to care, Vincent," I said, ignoring his glare and turning back to the waiter with one of my sweet smiles. "I actually planned on getting a pack to gather these, home. Is that possible?"

"Yes, ma'am," he bobbed his head, taking notes. "You have a change of sixty-two dollars."

"Take that as your tip," I said, waving him off.

Vincent frowned, his expression childish. "What was the meaning of that? We could still have our last dinner together."

I rolled my eyes. "I have things I need to do at home. My father would get worried."

He sighed, his voice laced with condescension. "I know you're mad at me, Davina. But when you find someone else, you'll be grateful I broke up with you."

I flared, getting up from my seat. "You didn't break up with me, Vincent. You don't call the shots here, not anymore. I'm done with you and your inability to make a decision on what you want. Bye, Vincent."

The waiter came with the pack and got my things together. I gave Vincent a last long look before walking out, but as usual, he followed me. "At least let me drive you home," he pleaded, walking closer, and I took a step back.

"No-" I started, but a voice interrupted us.

"I'm taking her home," Carson said, his blue eyes standing out against his tanned skin. His biceps were alluring, and ever since my father brought him back from the military, I couldn't help but steal glances.

Vincent's face contorted in anger, but Carson remained unfazed. "I'd advise you to watch your tone and step back, Mr."

Carson stepped in front of me protectively, and a sigh of relief immediately escaped my lips. "You don't want to go to work tomorrow with clutches and an arm holder," he added, his voice firm.

I saw the fear flash through Vincent's face as he nodded and jogged back inside. It was finally over. I trusted myself this time not to give in to him, no matter how many times he came back begging for me.

"Are you okay, miss?" Carson asked as we got into the car.

"Perfectly," I replied, remaining silent throughout the ride home.

As we arrived, my father's voice boomed from the living room. "Where the hell did you put your phone, Davina? The preparations should be finished by now. We can't afford to need things up."

I sighed tiredly, entering the room. "Everything is as you ordered, father. If you bothered to check my messages, you would see I sent you the reports."

He only checked my messages when he needed something from me. Right from when I was young, my father hadn't really been there for me in terms of care. He claimed I was a female, which made me weak and unable to take up the mantle as the Mayor of the human realm in Riverdale.

"The dining room? The servers? I want nothing to go wrong with the meeting tomorrow," he demanded.

"And they are all like you asked for. If there's a word like 'everything is overly ready,' it's this. Nothing will go wrong, father," I assured him.

"Have you checked on Mom?" I asked, trying to switch topics,

He hates it when I try to switch topics, but I was tired for the day. Heartbreak, responsibility as the Mayor's daughter, and what other unlucky fate does the day have for me ?

Was my father's demanding character the reason my mom has been away for two months, on a 'business trip'?

"I'll be there in the morning to check it out." He hung up.

A frown made its way to my lips as I stared at myself in the mirror, packing my hair into a bun to fit into my night bonnet.

Not even a 'take care or a well done'. I sighed, used to the feeling as I let sleep take over the moment I lay on the bed.

I arrived at the hotel with Julian's favorite takeout, ready to surprise my fiancé before our big merger. But the moment I swiped the keycard, the silence of the hallway felt heavy and wrong. Inside, a red-soled stiletto lay on the marble floor-the same one I'd watched my best friend Lila try on at Saks last week. Through the cracked bedroom door, I watched Julian's back arch as Lila looked me straight in the eye and smiled, wrapping her legs tighter around him to mock my heartbreak. I fled to the penthouse to hide, only to find Grafton, Julian's "crippled" brother, waiting in the dark. To my horror, the man who was supposed to be paralyzed stood up from his wheelchair, gripped my chin with cold fingers, and forced me to sign a contract that gave him control of my family's shares. He knew about my mother's secret medical bills and used them to buy my silence, effectively turning my life into a calculated game of corporate chess. The betrayal tasted like acid, and the injustice of it all burned in my throat. My fiancé was a liar, my best friend was a thief, and the man now controlling my fate was a predator who had been faking his disability for years. I couldn't understand how everyone I trusted had turned out to be a monster. I was trapped between a man who cheated on me and a man who wanted to own me, with no way out and no one to turn to. But when Julian came looking for me, Grafton didn't hide; he stood tall, looming over me with a possessive glint in his eyes. "Help me destroy Julian," I rasped, realizing that to survive the Faulkner men, I had to become the most dangerous player of them all.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

I stood at my mother's open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest's voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone-he brought Charla with him. He claimed she'd had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.
