Bound by faith: the rise of a rejected mate Chapter 1 The refusal

Melissa POV CHAPTER 1: THE REFUSAL As I stood at the edge of the meadow, there was a flurry of apprehensive murmurs mixed with excitement. Everyone in the Moonvalley Pack looked forward to the yearly mating ceremony, but I found it to be an anxious occasion. I looked around the crowd, hoping to see someone I knew or feel some comfort, but my heart was thumping in my chest. I clasped my hands together and muttered to myself, "I can't believe this day is finally here." My buddy Lily nudged me and said, "Melissa, don't look so nervous.

You'll be fine." Who knows? Perhaps you'll be matched with an incredible person. I attempted a smile, but deep down, I was knotted up with apprehension. Every wolf fantasized about being selected as a mate, but what would happen if my partner rejected me? What if I was turned down by them? I was afraid of the thought. I glanced around, taking in the other aspirants, and then my gaze fell upon Storm Pack Alpha Dennis Bruce. With only his presence, he commanded attention as he stood tall. With a sense of superiority, he surveyed the throng with his icy blue eyes. His dark hair played in the wind, giving him an even more menacing appearance. I swallowed. "Do you suppose he'll make love to someone today? Lily, noticing my attention, whispered. "I... I'm not sure," I stumbled. It didn't seem feasible to be paired with someone like Dennis. He was strong, and powerful, and exuded an aura that attracted others to him. But me, I was just Melissa Roger, a shy, quiet wolf who didn't often draw attention to herself. "All right! The matches are about to be announced! The gathering went hushed as the elder's voice roared. As the elder started listing the pairs, my heart raced. The fortunate wolves felt a rush of anticipation and optimism with every name shouted out. The elder yelled out, "Dennis Bruce," and everyone turned to look at him. Dennis was still, expressionless. "Plus... Melissa Roger." I blinked, startled. My mind kept repeating the phrase. Dennis was assigned to me? The Storm Pack's Alpha? Everything appeared to stop for a second. I felt the mating bond solidify, causing my breath to become stuck in my throat. I was drawn to him like I was being pulled by an unseen thread. My heart pounded with anticipation and anxiety simultaneously. With hope shining in my eyes, I glanced up at him. Dennis turned to face me, and we made eye contact. But what I got was a chilly shudder down my spine, not the warmth or connection I had anticipated. His eyes were distant, icy, and nearly irrational. I cautiously moved forward, waiting for him to say something, but the words that came out of his mouth broke my heart. Dennis continued, his voice cold and flat, "I reject you." How come? "With a sinking heart, I whispered. He said, "You heard me," louder so that everyone could hear. "I, Dennis Bruce, Storm Pack Alpha, decline to be my partner Melissa Roger." I felt hundreds of eyes on me, burning with astonishment and sympathy as the audience gasped. My entire body froze. My heart broke into a million pieces, and the world around me became hazy and unclear. "B-but why? I stumbled, speaking in a scarcely audible whisper. Dennis smirked. "Observe yourself. Weak, miserable, and not worthy to be my partner. Someone worthy of Luna, someone stronger, is what I deserve. Not you. His remarks cut like a blade through me. Tears were starting to form in my eyes, but I was determined not to let them fall. Not in this place. Not in front of all the people. I turned and ran without saying anything more. I had to flee, even though I had no idea where I was heading. I ran into the forest, tears clouding my vision, and the sounds of the muttering crowd faded behind me. Deep in the woods was where I finally found myself, but I had no idea how far I had run. I was surrounded by the comforting smell of earth and pine, but it didn't bring much solace. I broke down on the woodland floor, sobbing into my hands as my legs gave out. "How is this possible to happen? With a pounding heart from embarrassment and rejection, I muttered to myself. "Why me?" Dennis had discarded the bond without giving it much thought, even though it had seemed so strong and genuine. I had the impression that the rejection was weighing heavily on my chest and that I was having trouble breathing. A snarl sounded across the trees, startling me out of my reverie. My heart was racing when I looked up, but this time it was because of fear. A lone wolf emerged from the darkness; its eyes gleaming menacingly. It was bigger than I was, and it had a sneer on its face. My whole body went paralyzed. I lacked the strength to repel it. With its razor-sharp claws aimed at my neck, the rogue sprang for me. With almost no time to respond, I raised my arms in self-defense. I was forced to the ground by its weight, and I could feel its sharp claws tearing through my flesh. I let out a scream, attempting to ignore it, but it was too powerful. I knew I wasn't going to have much time left when I felt its hot breath on my neck. I was ready to give in when I saw a flash of fur and it tackled the rogue off me. My vision blurred as I struggled to comprehend what was occurring and gulped for air. The new wolf, bigger and more powerful than the old one, gave the rogue a fight I had never seen before. The rogue was vanquished and sent to the ground in a matter of moments. I blinked to attempt to get my vision back. The big wolf transformed back into a man, showing a man with intense green eyes and dark hair. "Who are you? I croaked, the pain weakening my voice. Beside me, the man knelt, his face expressionless. "My name is Damon," he uttered. "You're lucky that I arrived in time." The pain from my wounds shot through me, making me wince. Damon scowled as his gaze shifted to the wounds. His voice was firm but not cruel as he stated, "You shouldn't have been out here alone." My voice was unsteady as I murmured, "I... didn't expect this." "I was merely-" Rejected? With a little softening of his eyes, Damon concluded. "I am aware. I was told. My pupils expanded. "How do you...?" Damon stood up and extended his hand to me, saying, "I know more than you think, Melissa." "Your rejection isn't solely a result of your weakness. Greater factors are at work. I scowled as I attempted to interpret what he had said. "What are you trying to say?" Damon looked around, his face tight. "Be careful; I don't have time to explain anything right now. There are entities in the Storm Pack and Moonvalley that desire for you to fail. A shiver went down my spine. However, why me?" When Damon's gaze locked with mine, I briefly sensed something: worry? Sadness? "You'll learn the truth in due time. But remain hidden for the time being. Things are going to get risky soon. I was left alone and perplexed when Damon changed back into his wolf form and vanished into the forest before I had a chance to ask any more questions. My arm started to hurt badly as I tried to make sense of it all. I gasped as I peered down. The rogue's wound was glowing, very faintly but visible. I was filled with fear and perplexity as I peered at it in shock. What was it that I was experiencing? The faint glow pulsed again, leaving me wondering if this was just the beginning of something far bigger than I could imagine.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancĆ©, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancƩ. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancƩ now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.

I thought I was waking up in the arms of Arthur, the man I loved. But as the morning light hit the Hamptons estate, the man buttoning his cuffs by the window turned around with eyes like chips of ice. It was Augustus Riddle, Arthur’s cruel younger brother, and I had just spent the night whispering confessions of love into the wrong man's ear. The night I thought was a beautiful beginning turned into a devastating nightmare. Instead of comfort, Gus treated me like a stain on his expensive carpet, scribbling a check for "services rendered" before shoving me into a dark service corridor to hide my existence from his brother. "How much does it cost to buy your silence?" He sneered, before leaving me barefoot in a torrential downpour while he drove away in a luxury Cadillac. Four years later, I am a struggling actress in Los Angeles, working double shifts as a barista just to keep the lights on. My life was finally stable until my roommate dragged me to a high-end dinner to meet her new "influential" boyfriend. The man sitting at the table, looking more arrogant and lethal than ever, was Augustus. He spent the entire night humiliating me, calling me a pathetic amateur and a social climber in front of my only friends. When I fled into the rain and collapsed on the sidewalk, skinning my knee until I bled, he watched from his car. He saw me clutching a plastic baggie containing the taped-together pieces of that four-year-old check—the only proof of my shame. He looked at me like roadkill, rolled up his window, and drove off into the dark. I couldn't understand why he was doing this. Why did he hate me enough to crush me, yet remember that I couldn't handle the smell of cigarette smoke? Why did he leave me bleeding in the street, only to send expensive medical supplies and coffee to my door the very next morning? "I'm moving out." I told my roommates, realizing that Gus Riddle didn't just want to destroy me; he wanted to haunt me. I grabbed my suitcase and walked out with eighty dollars to my name, finally ready to disappear into the city before he could burn the rest of my life to the ground.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
