Second chances: a twisted fate Chapter 1 No good news, no happy home

AVA'S POV

"Doctor, no good news yet?" I asked with a hint of hope and expectation as she sat in front of me and my heart sank when she shook her head.

"I'm sorry, Mrs Ava. It's still the same. Considering the tests we've conducted, you're healthy enough to carry your own baby, but I still can't understand why you haven't gotten pregnant for the past four years now. Your husband's tests, too, were perfectly fine when conducted; I can seem to decipher what is wrong." The doctor replied and I let out a sigh as a lone tear ran down my face.

"What exactly have I done wrong? Why does nothing keep working? This issue has caused a lot of arguments between me and Blair... Blair has never tried to argue with me before but these days, I'm sure he's tired of me already. All I've ever wanted was to be the mother of his kids but why does fate have to treat me so unfairly?" I sobbed as I buried my face in my hands and she gently patted my arm.

"You can always try IVF. Talk to Blair about it, maybe he'll agree to it this time since he's so desperate for a child." She suggested and I sniffed as I wiped my tears with the back of my hand.

"I don't know if he'll accept that. He's always been a traditional man, you know. He loves everything natural. But I'll try to talk to him again." I replied as I picked up my bag and left the doctor's office.

Walking to the car, I couldn't help the thoughts that spiraled through my head. Marrying Blair was everything I had ever wanted. It was like a dream come true because he was my first love and he treated me like nothing less. He's always adored me and cherished me with everything he had.

Our love was like that of a fairytale, it was almost perfect, but I just had to mess it all up by not being able to give birth. Blair had always loved kids and I knew that it broke his heart that I couldn't give him one.

If only...

A loud car honk suddenly drew me out of my thoughts and I realized that I had been walking on the main road.

"I'm so sorry!" I yelled as I immediately walked over to the roadside and bowed apologetically while the driver yelled at me.

"If you wanna die, go choose to die somewhere else! Not with my car!" He yelled as he drove away and I let out a tired sigh.

Wouldn't dying be better than living an infertile life? I retraced my steps as I returned to my car and drove back to the house in sorrow and agony.

I walked up to our room and to my surprise, Blair was seated inside, looking very dejected and furious. I walked up to him and tapped his shoulder, causing him to jump in shock.

"Oh, it's you." He said when he saw me and I frowned at how sad his expression was.

"Did something happen, Blair? You know you can talk to me." I said while trying to comfort him, but he immediately shrugged me off and turned away.

"Blair? Come on, please talk to me." I begged and it was like he had finally snapped as he got up with anger written all over his face.

"You want me to talk to you? Fine. Do you know what your infertility has caused me? I'm an object of laughter in my family! Even at work, everyone knows me as the one who was married for four years without a child. People even accuse me of being impotent. Is that what you wanted to hear? Are you happy now?" He yelled in frustration and I stood there frozen as his words stabbed my heart harder and harder.

"You think this is my fault, Blair? We've run billions of tests, and it has been proven that I'm not infertile, yet you still think I'm the problem? Do you think I don't want to carry my child? Our child? The only solution we have now is IVF, and I've tried explaining it to you, but you just won't listen!" I replied as tears welled up in my eyes and he let out a frustrated groan.

"If you mention that stupid thing to me one more time, I won't hesitate to throw you out of my house. You're making me regret my whole life's decisions!" He yelled and my heart sank to the deepest depths of my stomach as tears fell freely down my face.

"Hey, I didn't mean all that..." He started but I just smiled at him in response as I turned around and left the room. He had told me exactly what was on his mind, he regretted marrying me.

I couldn't hold in my tears as I walked into the kitchen and cried to my heart's content. Everything was weighing me down, everything was making me crumble and there was no one to support me, no one that I could turn to for comfort.

After crying for a few minutes, I wiped my tears and turned around, only to find my mother-in-law staring at me with a smug smile on her face.

"Mother." I greeted and she eyed me while her face contorted into an expression of disgust as she looked at me.

"I'm not your mother. I definitely wouldn't give birth to an infertile thing like you." She replied with a sarcastic tone and I fought back the tears that threatened to fall as I moved to walk past her when she held my hand back.

"There's one thing I want you to know, and that is, you're leaving my son's house very soon. I'll make sure of it."

"I'm his wife. You can't just separate us as you wish. I will get pregnant and I'll stay by Blair's side." I replied with a determination I never knew I had and she let out a devious laugh that made my skin crawl.

"Why don't we watch and see?"

I married Clive Harrington, the coldest billionaire in Manhattan, under a strict contract that forbade any emotional burdens. When I needed a high-risk surgery to save my sight, I checked into the clinic alone, hiding the procedure from a husband who saw me as nothing more than a legal asset. I thought I could handle the darkness in silence. But while I was blind and bandaged in my hospital bed, my biological mother called, screaming that if I didn't produce a Harrington heir by the end of the fiscal year, she would cut off the life-saving treatments for my disabled sister. I was crawling on the cold hospital floor, desperately feeling for a cane I had dropped, when I touched a pair of expensive leather shoes. It was Clive. He was supposed to be in London closing a multi-million dollar deal, but there he was, watching his "contract wife" groveling in the dark like a beggar. He didn't walk away in disgust. He carried me to a five-thousand-dollar-a-night VIP suite and sat by my bed, listening in chilling silence as another voicemail from my mother filled the room, calling me a "useless broodmare" who was only worth the trust fund disbursements my marriage secured. I expected him to remind me of Clause 34B or hand me divorce papers now that I was "damaged goods." Instead, I felt his thumb brush a stray tear from my cheek, his presence shifting from a statue of ice into a predatory shield. "I thought I was just currency to you," I whispered, my voice trembling behind the gauze. "Just an investment." Clive didn't answer with words. He picked up his phone and called his head of legal with a single, terrifying command: "Kill the Douglas family’s credit lines. Every debt, every lien—trigger them all. If they want a war, I’ll give them a massacre." As he leaned down to kiss my bandaged forehead, I realized the contract was dead. My husband wasn't protecting an asset anymore; he was hunting the people who had dared to touch what belonged to him.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
