You Are Mine (Jane Pecky) Chapter 1 Shadows in Spring Dale

Springdale High School hummed with the restless energy of teenagers waiting for the bell to free them from the day's lessons. The smell of old textbooks and cheap cafeteria coffee clung to the air. Alexander "Lex" Thompson leaned against the doorway of his classroom, his sharp eyes surveying the flow of students down the corridor. Polished, poised, and always in control-that was the face Lex presented to the world.

Beneath that polished veneer, however, Lex was a man driven by a hunger for influence and dominance. Teaching wasn't just a job to him-it was a position of power. A way to quietly orchestrate the world around him.

He noticed everything: the slouch of a tired student, the stolen glances between secret crushes, and the subtle shifts in teenage friendships. But there was one student who stood out in the crowd. Sophia Rose.

Sixteen, quiet, with dark brown eyes that always seemed a little too sad for someone her age. She was a puzzle-fragile yet strong in ways most people never noticed. Lex saw the loneliness in her posture, the way her shoulders hunched as if carrying invisible burdens. There was something haunting about her, and it gnawed at Lex's carefully constructed walls.

Sophia had always been good at blending into the background. She preferred it that way. After her parents' divorce, she'd lost the will to fight for attention. Her mother was busy rebuilding a life, her father distant and cold. Even her friends seemed like distant echoes of a world she no longer fit into. Photography was her only escape-a lens through which the world made sense.

Today, she lingered by the photography club notice board, her fingers brushing the edge of a poster announcing an upcoming competition. Lex watched her from his classroom window, pretending to sort through papers. Her brow furrowed in concentration as if the weight of the decision to participate was monumental.

It wasn't the first time he'd found himself observing her. At first, it had been simple curiosity. But curiosity had a way of turning into something darker when left unchecked. Lex knew every excuse to linger near her photography club events. He'd justified driving through her neighborhood as coincidence. But deep down, he was aware of the thin line he was toeing-a line that should never be crossed.

Sophia wasn't oblivious to the feeling that lingered at the edges of her mind. The sense of being watched had crept into her daily routine like an unwelcome guest. At first, she dismissed it as paranoia, a symptom of her overactive imagination. But lately, the feeling was harder to ignore. She'd catch a figure at the corner of her vision, only to turn and see nothing.

As the school bell echoed through the hallways, snapping Sophia out of her thoughts, she hurried to her next class. Lex straightened and forced himself to breathe.

Focus. You're a professional. Act like it.

He returned to his desk, but Sophia's image lingered in his mind. He told himself it was harmless-just concern for a troubled student. Yet the gnawing ache in his chest betrayed him. It wasn't just concern. It was need.

The obsession had crept up on him slowly, like ivy climbing a wall, unnoticed until it had taken root. And now it was suffocating him. Lex knew he had to regain control, had to stop this madness before it spiraled out of his grasp.

After school, the sky hung low with gray clouds. Sophia packed up her camera gear and headed for the park. She needed a distraction from the chaos in her mind. Her feet carried her to the quiet paths where trees whispered in the wind. The world was easier to bear when viewed through the lens of her camera.

She was so focused on capturing the golden leaves scattered on the path that she didn't hear the footsteps behind her.

"Nice shot," a voice said.

Startled, she turned to see Mr. Thompson standing a few feet away, hands in his pockets. Her heart raced-not out of fear, but surprise.

"Oh, hi," she said, lowering the camera. "I didn't know anyone else was here."

"Just out for a walk," he said smoothly. "Sometimes you need to clear your head after a long day."

Sophia nodded, suddenly aware of how alone they were. The park was quiet, with only the occasional rustle of leaves.

"I didn't know you were into photography," Lex said, glancing at the camera.

"It's just a hobby," she shrugged.

"You're good at it. I've seen some of your work in the school gallery."

A faint blush crept up her cheeks. "Thanks."

They stood in awkward silence for a moment before Sophia cleared her throat. "I should probably get going."

Lex's jaw tightened, but he forced a smile. "Of course. Be careful on your way home."

She nodded and walked away, her footsteps crunching against the gravel path. Lex watched her go, his heart pounding. He knew he was playing a dangerous game. One wrong move could shatter everything he'd built.

But the pull was undeniable. And that was the most terrifying part.

As Sophia disappeared into the distance, Lex stood frozen in place. The darkness within him whispered promises he wasn't sure he could resist.

For two years, I was the invisible force behind tech billionaire Kieran Douglas, convinced that our "private" romance was his way of protecting us from the tabloid spotlight. I managed his mergers, warmed his bed, and waited for a future that didn't exist. The illusion shattered at 6:00 AM when a Page Six alert debuted Kieran’s "real" romance with socialite Aspen Schneider. Before I could even process the betrayal, Kieran sent me a cold, professional text: "Order flowers for Aspen. Pink peonies. Her favorite." When I tried to walk away, my own mother called me a disgrace and threatened to lock my inheritance forever unless I married a sixty-year-old businessman to save her failing estate. At a high-society gala that same night, Aspen intentionally crushed my burned hand in front of the cameras, while Kieran stood by and dismissed me as a "mediocre assistant" who had overstayed her welcome. I stood in the cold New York rain, drenched in champagne and humiliation, realizing that every sacrifice I made for Kieran was a joke. I was a ghost in a penthouse that was never mine, discarded the moment his "soulmate" returned. To the world, I was just a placeholder whose time had run out. But Kieran forgot one thing: my father’s multi-million dollar trust fund unlocks the moment I legally marry. I didn't need love; I needed a signature and a shield. I walked into a discreet law firm and signed a marriage contract with a man I believed was the city’s most notorious, scandal-ridden playboy. I thought I was marrying a degenerate "beard" to buy my freedom and secure my revenge. I didn't realize the man who signed that paper wasn't a playboy at all, but Gaston Collins—the most powerful and dangerous man on Wall Street—and he had no intention of letting our fake marriage stay fake.

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.

I was sitting in the Presidential Suite of The Pierre, wearing a Vera Wang gown worth more than most people earn in a decade. It was supposed to be the wedding of the century, the final move to merge two of Manhattan's most powerful empires. Then my phone buzzed. It was an Instagram Story from my fiancĆ©, Jameson. He was at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris with a caption that read: "Fuck the chains. Chasing freedom." He hadn't just gotten cold feet; he had abandoned me at the altar to run across the world. My father didn't come in to comfort me. He burst through the door roaring about a lost acquisition deal, telling me the Holland Group would strip our family for parts if the ceremony didn't happen by noon. My stepmother wailed about us becoming the laughingstock of the Upper East Side. The Holland PR director even suggested I fake a "panic attack" to make myself look weak and sympathetic to save their stock price. Then Jameson’s sleazy cousin, Pierce, walked in with a lopsided grin, offering to "step in" and marry me just to get his hands on my assets. I looked at them and realized I wasn't a daughter or a bride to anyone in that room. I was a failed asset, a bouncing check, a girl whose own father told her to go to Paris and "beg" the man who had just publicly humiliated her. The girl who wanted to be loved died in that mirror. I realized that if I was going to be sold to save a merger, I was going to sell myself to the one who actually controlled the money. I marched past my parents and walked straight into the VIP holding room. I looked the most powerful man in the room—Jameson’s cold, ruthless uncle, Fletcher Holland—dead in the eye and threw the iPad on the table. "Jameson is gone," I said, my voice as hard as stone. "Marry me instead."

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I’ve returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders—the man I was told was a crippled recluse—intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I’d cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent—the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower’s security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy—Archibald’s secret son—wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald’s face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."
