Chapter 1 Prologue (1)

"Oh Oluwa, god of the forest, what a stunning maiden I see in the grass over there!" Babida, the lumberjack, exclaimed as he took a break from chopping wood. The reason for his sudden pause: a slender, dark-skinned girl, around eighteen, with curly hair, holding a basket brimming with mushrooms in her right hand. Her name was Suzie.

She'd been sent into the woods by her grandmother-affectionately called big momma-to gather mushrooms for dinner soup.

With her back turned, Suzie was completely focused on her hunt for the white Button species, sorting through her finds. She tossed aside the ones that could make you sick and carefully placed the good ones into her rubber basket for the elderly's favorite dish.

As she bent down to pick more mushrooms, the hem of her pink silk mini-dress shifted upward, revealing more of her smooth, hairless legs. The dress was tied at the waist with cords, creating an adorable butterfly knot at the front.

Babida, mesmerized, felt his brief pause stretch into an endless moment of fascination. The steel ax he'd gripped tightly for the past two hours slipped from his hands and landed in the pile of wood shavings at his feet.

"Hey there!" he called out, his voice booming through the quiet woods.

The sudden shout startled Suzie. She turned around, her eyes wide and her left hand pressed against her chest, before letting out a deep sigh and taking a step back.

Before her stood a tall, sweaty man in his thirties, his muscular frame on full display in the afternoon sun. His chest was as broad as a mountain, and his bulging biceps were lined with distinct veins.

"Who are you?" Suzie shouted, panic creeping into her voice.

"What are you doing here?" she added, continuing to back away.

"Sorry, Miss! I didn't mean to scare you. Please forgive my manners!" Babida replied, his tone softening.

Unsure how to react to his peaceful demeanor, Suzie decided it was best to leave.

"Anyway, I'm going now," she said, quickening her pace as she headed back through the brush.

"Wait, please! Can I at least know your name?" Babida called after her, offering a bright smile.

"Why? I just told you I'm leaving! Didn't you hear me?" Suzie shot back, then took off running, her basket of mushrooms clutched tightly in her hand.

Babida reached out his arm to stop her, but it was too late. The beautiful stranger had disappeared into the forest as quickly as she could.

Feeling a wave of disappointment wash over him, the woodsman clenched his fists and let out a frustrated scream.

In the bustling city of Palmer, a striking beauty named Jane Hart lived a life of modest means with her father Mark, a retired construction worker. Despite her impoverished background, Jane's goddess-like physique - slim, svelte, with black tresses, brown eyes, and baby's skin - belied her station as a mere waitress struggling to make ends meet. One fateful day, while working as a cleaner at an art gallery, Jane's path crossed with that of Brandon Harrington, the heir to a prominent crude oil empire. Brandon was instantly captivated by Jane's ethereal beauty, and struck up a conversation about art that revealed her unexpected depth of knowledge. Recognizing her potential, he offered her a job as his secretary. Jane eagerly accepted, and on her first day, her beauty mesmerized the entire office, including Brandon himself. As they grew closer, an undeniable attraction blossomed between them, much to the chagrin of Brandon's long-time colleague Isabella Normand, who became consumed with jealousy. When news of their budding romance reached Brandon's aristocratic parents, Edward and Evelyn Harrington, they were appalled at the prospect of their son consorting with a woman of such low birth. Determined to put an end to the affair, they hired a private investigator who uncovered Jane's sordid past as a former prostitute, a desperate means of survival she had long since left behind. Devastated by the revelation, Brandon found himself torn between his love for Jane and the demands of his formidable parents, who insisted he break off the engagement and marry the more socially acceptable Isabella Normand, whose father was a valued business associate. Reluctantly, Brandon acquiesced, shattering Jane's heart and casting her back into poverty. Undeterred, Jane invested her meager savings into launching her own fashion company, a long-held dream that blossomed into remarkable success. However, fate had more twists in store as a financial crisis struck, decimating the Harrington empire and leaving Brandon and Isabella destitute. In a cruel twist of fate, Brandon found himself seeking employment at Jane's thriving fashion house, where he was granted an interview – only to come face-to-face with his former love. Despite the pain of their past, Jane's forgiving nature prevailed, and she hired Brandon as an accountant. But their reunion was short-lived, as Jane's new, wealthy companion grew increasingly possessive and abusive, culminating in a shocking public assault witnessed by Brandon. Outraged, Brandon intervened, reigniting the spark between him and Jane as her companion stormed off, their engagement shattered once more. Seizing the opportunity, the impoverished Brandon rekindled his relationship with Jane, harboring ulterior motives to exploit her wealth and regain his former opulence. Yet Jane's friend warned her of Brandon's deceitful plans, prompting her to hire a private investigator who uncovered Brandon's embezzlement of company funds. Confronted with the truth, Jane was forced to face the harsh reality of Brandon's betrayal. He was swiftly prosecuted and imprisoned, leaving Jane heartbroken but ultimately free to find true love and happiness with her reconciled companion. Together, they married and welcomed a beautiful daughter, a testament to Jane's resilience and the triumph of her unwavering spirit over the adversities that once threatened to consume her.

I spent four hours preparing a five-course meal for our fifth anniversary. When Jackson finally walked into the penthouse an hour late, he didn't even look at the table. He just dropped a thick Manila envelope in front of me and told me he was done. He said his stepsister, Davida, was getting worse and needed "stability." I wasn't his wife; I was a placeholder, a temporary fix he used until the woman he actually loved was ready to take my place. Jackson didn't just want a divorce; he wanted to erase me. He called me a "proprietary asset," claiming that every design I had created to save his empire belonged to him. He froze my bank accounts, cut off my phone, and told me I’d be nothing without his name. Davida even called me from her hospital bed to flaunt the family heirloom ring Jackson claimed was lost, mocking me for being "baggage" that was finally being cleared out. I stood in our empty home, realizing I had spent five years being a martyr for a man who saw me as a transaction. I couldn't understand how he could be so blind to the monster he was protecting, or how he could discard me so coldly after I had given him everything. I grabbed my hidden sketchbook, shredded our wedding portrait, and walked out into the rain. I dialed a number I hadn't touched in years—a dangerous man known as The Surgeon who dealt in debts and shadows. I told him I was ready to pay his price. Jackson and Davida wanted to steal my identity, but I was about to show the world the literal scars they had left behind.

I sat on the cold tile floor of our Upper East Side penthouse, staring at the two pink lines until my vision blurred. After ten years of loving Julian Sterling and three years of a hollow marriage, I finally had the one thing that could bridge the distance between us. I was pregnant. But Julian didn't come home with flowers for our anniversary. He tossed a thick manila envelope onto the marble coffee table with a heavy thud. Fiona, the woman he'd truly loved for years, was back in New York, and he told me our "business deal" was officially over. "Sign it," He said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. He looked at me with the cold detachment of a man selling a piece of unwanted furniture. When I hesitated, he told me to add a zero to the alimony if the money wasn't enough. I realized in that moment that if he knew about the baby, he wouldn't love me; he would simply take my child and give it to Fiona to raise. I shoved the pregnancy test into my pocket, signed the papers with a shaking hand, and lied through my teeth. When my morning sickness hit, I slumped to the floor to hide the truth. "It's just cramps," I gasped, watching him recoil as if I were contagious. To make him stay away, I invented a man named Jack-a fake boyfriend who supposedly gave me the kindness Julian never could. Suddenly, the man who wanted me gone became a monster of possessiveness. He threatened to "bury" a man who didn't exist while leaving me humiliated at his family's dinner to rush to Fiona's side. I was so broken that I even ate a cake I was deathly allergic to, then had to refuse life-saving steroids at the hospital because they would harm the fetus. Julian thinks he's stalling the divorce for two months to protect the family's reputation for his father's Jubilee. He thinks he's keeping his "property" on a short leash until the press dies down. He has no idea I'm using those sixty days to build a fortress for my child. By the time he realizes the truth, I'll be gone, and the Sterling heir will be far beyond his reach.
