Love Beneath The Oak Chapter 1 ONCE UPON A WINTER ☃️

The floor was cold tonight. Not that it had always been different but this night is freezing cold. This is how I know whenever winter is on the way. Cindy wouldn't stop snoring and Lyla has taken the cover all to herself. I looked around and I found the girls, both old and young ones sleeping in different directions. We are the slaves of the most successful woman in Thores, Sumaya. She owns the largest population of slaves in the town

Not even the king could compete with her wealth. We were dressed. We were not to be shackled during the night but when we were on the farm, except during festivals that we have visitors in the compound. And When I think about those girls that tried to flee, a cold shiver ran through me. Loud snores from different angles, but that was not what kept me awake tonight. It was not even the cold weather.

It has been a month since I've started sneaking out of the slave chamber. Sneaking out was common among the slaves, especially during cold nights like now. Female slaves were fond of sneaking down to the males for pleasure. But that was not where I am headed now, but to Master Angus, the second of the three sons of my owner.I could remember, it all started that day.

As a slave, we were never meant to go any closer to the young masters. Not even as much as to breath in the same air as them. Their food, clothes, and other belongings were only to be touched by the "senior slaves". But never call them that-those vengeful creatures, they hate to be categorised with us but that wouldn't change the fact that they are also slaves but only favoured. Lyla has just became one of these "favoured ones"and she wouldn't stop riding over it. She has found a necklace which Madame has misplaced and she was compensated with the promotion.

Lyla has taken a strange dislike of me immediately I was sold into the household. And that was due to the popularity I got after I got into the compound. This was because of people's awe concerning my hair colour and texture. They said it feels as if I have always cared for my hair but how could I when I was born into slavery and has never been wealthy before. Lyla hated me for taking the slave's attentions from her. But that is not my fault, is it?

That day, We had just come from the farm and I was among the girls peeling the tubers when Lyla sent for me. I was wondering why she would call for me when we no longer have any business together. However, I could only heed her call, unless I'm planning to have my body whipped. Yes, senior slaves do oppress and maltreat the lower ones like that.

I was shocked when the viper told me to go into Angus' room to pack his clothes and wash. Of course he could not be home since the young masters hated seeing us. They believe we are dirty and stinky and couldn't stand our presence. I couldn't ask her why she had sent me such but I never asked her. I knew it would make her feel good to send a fellow on an errands. When I got into Angus' room, I realised why Lyla had sent me into Angus' room when it would be a pleasure for her to be there herself.

Angus' room was looking so tattered and unkept. It was stinky and at that moment it was only a bit different from a slaves' room. I spent my time looking around the room before I got to work. God knows it might be that once in my lifetime that I would enter his room. My eyes sought a big frame hung high from the wall. In it is a family picture of the three brothers. Another one was of their farmland and then of different animals. I was intrigued. Angus is wicked and devious. I have never intended him to be a lover of animals. I was so lost in the scenery that I didn't know when someone joined me in the room.

"Enjoying yourself?"

I jumped almost out of my skin when the words were spoken into directly my ears. Striken with fear, I twirled around only to bump right into Angus. I squealed loudly, moving away from him immediately.

"Why? You must be enjoying yourself", although his tone was light, his eyes was anything but cool. I wondered how long he has been standing watching my stupidity. I was a bit glad though, it was my first time I would be standing so close to any of the young masters.

However, the moment I made the mistake of meeting his cold eyes, a deep shiver ran through me. Never have I seen a soul as empty before. It was as if he has no spirit and nothing to loose. His eyes was cold with the usual defiant in it. I actually knew, that I could get lost in those magnetic blues. Shaking my head, I took a step back and he followed suite. By this time , I had become a trembling mess. My legs were shaking profusely and I could barely control my lips from uttering nonsense.

"I b_beg you, m_my lord, please don't kill me."

"I didn't mean to. Please forgive me", I cried but he suddenly burst into laughter, shocking me.

"Who told you I want to kill you?", he asked, the earlier mirth back in his eyes as he began to move closer to me.

"You're no use to me dead", murmur but I couldn't understand. I continued to step backwards while he moves closer to me. Before I knew it, he stretched his hand forward and my 'chest_wrap' was tugged loose, exposing my breasts to him.

I was the titan of Wall Street until an indictment and an ankle monitor turned my penthouse into a gilded cage. To save face, I was forced into a marriage with Elza, a "mute" girl from the Schmidt family whom I treated as nothing more than a silent piece of furniture while my empire crumbled. The night I was poisoned at a high-society gala, a mysterious server in an oversized uniform saved my life with terrifying, clinical precision. They disappeared into the night, leaving me with a silver cufflink and a burning obsession to find the shadow who held my life in their hands. Back home, I took my frustration out on Elza, telling her she was "exhausting to look at" and "smelled like sickness" after her charity visits. Her own family treated her like a stray dog, trying to humiliate her at the next gala by dressing her in what they claimed was a cheap knockoff while whispering to the press that she was nothing but a high-end escort. "Stay out of my way," I would growl at her, never noticing the steel in her eyes. I sat at my table, watching my rivals' stocks plummet and wondering who "The Zero"—the legendary financial ghost—really was. I never suspected that the woman I ignored was the same one solving the equations that were currently burning Manhattan to the ground. The injustice peaked when Elza stood before the city's elite, not as a victim, but as a queen. She dropped over a hundred million dollars to buy back her family’s legacy, revealing a secret fortune that made my own empire look like pocket change. As I grabbed her wrist and saw the small red mole hidden beneath her watch, the truth hit me like a physical blow. The silent wife I had despised was the savior I had been hunting, and she was finally done playing the victim. "We have a lot to talk about, wife," I whispered, realizing I had been sleeping next to the most dangerous woman in the world.

The heavy iron gates of the Wilderness Correction Camp groaned as they released me after three years of state-sponsored hell. I stood on the dirt road, clutching a plastic bag that held my entire life, waiting for the family that claimed they sent me there for "rehab." My brother, Brady, picked me up in a luxury SUV only to throw me out onto a deserted highway in the middle of a brewing storm. He told me I was a "public relations nightmare" and that the rain might finally wash the "stink" of the camp off me. He drove away, leaving me to limp miles through the mud on a snapped ankle. When I finally dragged myself to our family estate, my mother didn't offer a hug; she gasped in horror because my muddy clothes were ruining her Italian marble. They didn't give me my old room back. Instead, they banished me to a moldy gardener’s shack and hired a "babysitter" to make sure I didn't embarrass them further. My sister, Kaleigh, stood there in white cashmere, pretending to cry while clinging to her fiancé, Ambrose—the man who had once been mine. They all treated me like a volatile junkie, refusing to acknowledge that Kaleigh was the one who planted the drugs in my bag three years ago. They wanted to believe I was broken so they wouldn't have to feel guilty about the "wellness retreat" that was actually a torture chamber. I sat in the dark of that shed, feeling the cooling gel on the cigarette burns that covered my arms, and realized they had made a fatal mistake. They thought they had erased me, but I had returned with a roadmap of scars and a hidden satellite phone. At dinner, I didn't beg for their love. I simply rolled up my sleeves and showed them the price of their silence. As the wine spilled and the lies crumbled, I sent a single text to the only person I trusted: "I'm in. Let them simmer." The hunt was finally on.

Rain hammered against the asphalt as my sedan spun violently into the guardrail on the I-95. Blood trickled down my temple, stinging my eyes, while the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers mocked my panic. Trembling, I dialed my husband, Clive. His executive assistant answered instead, his voice professional and utterly cold. "Mr. Wilson says to stop the theatrics. He said, and I quote, 'Hang up. Tell her I don’t have time for her emotional blackmail tonight.'" The line went dead while I was still trapped in the wreckage. At the hospital, I watched the news footage of Clive wrapping his jacket around his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, Angelena, shielding her from the storm I was currently bleeding in. When I returned to our penthouse, I found a prenatal ultrasound in his suit pocket, dated the day he claimed to be on a business trip. Instead of an apology, Clive met me with a sneer. He told me I was nothing but an "expensive decoration" his father bought to make him look stable. He froze my bank accounts and cut off my cards, waiting for the hunger to drive me back to his feet. I stared at the man I had loved for four years, realizing he didn't just want a wife; he wanted a prop he could switch off. He thought he could starve me into submission while he played father to another woman's child. But Clive forgot one thing. Before I was his trophy wife, I was Starfall—the legendary voice actress who vanished at the height of her fame. "I'm not jealous, Clive. I'm done." I grabbed my old microphone and walked out. I’m not just leaving him; I’m taking the lead role in the biggest saga in Hollywood—the one Angelena is desperate for. This time, the "decoration" is going to burn his world down.

The rain in Detroit was slick with grime when my family finally came to fetch me. They didn't want a reunion; they wanted a sacrificial lamb to marry into the Kaufman empire to save their failing business. I thought I was just being sold off, but the limo ride ended under a dark overpass where six hired thugs were waiting with chains. My own sister had ordered them to "break my spirit" so I’d be a shaking, pathetic mess by the time I reached the altar. They called me "Detroit trash" and sprayed air freshener when I sat on their leather seats. My stepmother wanted a video of me begging for my life, and my father was ready to trade me like a used car to a man everyone called a "vegetable." They expected a submissive country girl, unaware that I was a high-level "cleaner" who could snap a radius bone before they could even scream. When I finally reached the Kaufman estate, I found my fiancé, Barron, slumped in a wheelchair, drooling and silent. But as soon as the doors closed, the "invalid" grabbed my wrist with a grip of iron and whispered a command that changed everything. I didn't understand why my own blood was so desperate to see me destroyed. What had I ever done to deserve a hit squad and a forced marriage to a man they thought was a corpse? But Barron isn't a vegetable, and I'm not a victim. We just touched down at the Moon family gala in a matte-black helicopter, and as the doors slide open, the "broken" bride is about to show them exactly what happens when you throw away the wrong daughter. "If we're going to crash a party," Barron whispered, his eyes burning with lethal clarity, "we should make an entrance."
