A BRIDE FOR THE DEMON KING Chapter 1 THE BARGAIN

CHAPTER ONE: The Bargain

The day of her wedding smelled like iron and lavender.

Seraphina sat motionless in the velvet-lined carriage as it rolled through the last stretch of human land. Her hands were folded neatly in her lap. Her gown shimmered in the fading light-lace and jewels and the heavy weight of duty stitched into every seam.

She had not chosen it. She had not chosen any of this.

Outside, soldiers rode in silence, their armor bearing her family's crest. None of them looked at her. Not anymore.

Beyond them, the sky had started to change.

It was subtle at first-a shift in color, the air growing colder. The soft pastels of twilight faded into something sharper, deeper. A dull violet haze clung to the horizon like smoke.

Seraphina had never seen the border before.

But now that she was here, she understood why no one ever returned from beyond it.

The road ended in a stone arch. Tall. Weathered. Covered in black moss and strange runes that pulsed faintly in the dying light.

The soldiers stopped. The horses snorted uneasily. Not a single bird sang.

And then the carriage moved forward-alone.

Seraphina sat straighter. Her spine was steel, even if her stomach twisted.

She would not beg.

She would not cry.

And she would not be afraid of a man who had to hide behind shadows and magic.

A husband she had never seen.

A kingdom no one spoke of without whispering.

A bargain made by her father in the dead of night-for power, for peace, for reasons he never explained.

The carriage passed beneath the arch.

The world changed.

Light dimmed unnaturally. The sky deepened into bruised violet. The trees bent inward, their leaves dark as ink, their trunks weeping sap that shimmered like silver. The air thickened. Sound dulled.

She'd crossed into Veyrith.

The Demon King's realm.

Her new home.

The carriage slowed.

Outside the window, black stone towers rose like claws from the earth, twisting toward the sky. A palace carved from obsidian and shadow. No torches burned. No servants waited.

Just a long staircase.

And at the top, a figure stood.

Tall. Unmoving. Cloaked in night.

Her heart knocked once-hard-before she willed it silent.

The carriage door opened.

Seraphina stepped out without hesitation, her silks whispering around her ankles.

The figure did not move.

She met his gaze-those eyes, burning faintly red from beneath his hood-and raised her chin.

"I am Princess Seraphina of Aeloria," she said, voice even. "Daughter of the High House. Bride of the King."

The man said nothing.

She took the first step up the stairs.

He watched her like a predator deciding whether to strike.

Good, she thought.

Let him underestimate her.

She had no plans to be a quiet queen.

HONEY MULLINS

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I've returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders-the man I was told was a crippled recluse-intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I'd cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent-the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower's security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy-Archibald's secret son-wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald's face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

Landslide

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

I arrived at the hotel with Julian's favorite takeout, ready to surprise my fiancé before our big merger. But the moment I swiped the keycard, the silence of the hallway felt heavy and wrong. Inside, a red-soled stiletto lay on the marble floor-the same one I'd watched my best friend Lila try on at Saks last week. Through the cracked bedroom door, I watched Julian's back arch as Lila looked me straight in the eye and smiled, wrapping her legs tighter around him to mock my heartbreak. I fled to the penthouse to hide, only to find Grafton, Julian's "crippled" brother, waiting in the dark. To my horror, the man who was supposed to be paralyzed stood up from his wheelchair, gripped my chin with cold fingers, and forced me to sign a contract that gave him control of my family's shares. He knew about my mother's secret medical bills and used them to buy my silence, effectively turning my life into a calculated game of corporate chess. The betrayal tasted like acid, and the injustice of it all burned in my throat. My fiancé was a liar, my best friend was a thief, and the man now controlling my fate was a predator who had been faking his disability for years. I couldn't understand how everyone I trusted had turned out to be a monster. I was trapped between a man who cheated on me and a man who wanted to own me, with no way out and no one to turn to. But when Julian came looking for me, Grafton didn't hide; he stood tall, looming over me with a possessive glint in his eyes. "Help me destroy Julian," I rasped, realizing that to survive the Faulkner men, I had to become the most dangerous player of them all.
