On the day Colby married Ruben the heir to the Gibson Group, not a single member of the Gibson family attended the wedding to offer their blessings. Only Brenda, Ruben's grandmother, made a phone call to her. "Want to make a bet? If, by the third year, you both are still in love, I will persuade the Gibson family to accept you. On the contrary, you must leave Ruben, and I will find him a woman whose family status aligns better with his." Colby agreed confidently. Ruben loved her as if his life depended on it, even willing to cut off his family for her. How could their love not last three years? But she never anticipated that in the third year of their marriage, Ruben would betray her.

You Live the Rest of Your Life on Your Own Chapter 1

On the day Colby Lambert married Ruben Gibson, the heir of the Gibson Group, no one from the Gibson family showed up to offer their blessings. Only Ruben's grandmother, Brenda, called her.

"How about we make a bet?" Brenda proposed. "If you are still in love in the third year, I will convince our family to accept you. Otherwise, you'll have to divorce Ruben, and I will find him a woman with a matching family background."

With her head held high, Colby agreed confidently.

Ruben loved her with all his heart, even willing to break away from his family for her. How could they not last three years?

Yet, she hadn't anticipated that in their third year of marriage, Ruben would cheat on her.

...

In the eighth month of Colby's pregnancy, Ruben hired a new female assistant, Lesly Barton, whom he took everywhere, drawing much attention.

When people teased that Ruben had found himself a mistress for entertainment, he only smiled without comment, while Lesly blushed shyly, sparking vivid imaginations.

This seductive rumor soon reached Colby's ears.

"Men are all the same. Ruben once spoiled his wife so much, but now that she's pregnant, he still couldn't resist the temptation and found a mistress. And he even brazenly flaunts that mistress."

"That's men. When they love someone, they give them everything. When they don't, they take everything away."

"Rumor has it Ruben is bringing his mistress to his grandpa, Winston's 80th birthday party tonight. Well... well."

Colby's smile froze on her face as she stared at the message Ruben had just sent her. "Don't bother coming to my grandpa's 80th birthday party tonight. It'll just be a hassle for you with all the formalities. You're carrying my baby, precious. And if anyone has an issue, I'll handle it."

When she first read the message, Colby was moved. After all, Ruben had married her despite the entire Gibson family's disapproval, with Winston being the most vocal of the opponents. Winston despised her humble background and felt that she was not worthy of his precious grandson.

Ruben had remained silent, pulling out a revolver with a single bullet, and pointed it at his temple. He fired, then handed the gun to Winston with a sneer.

"Are you willing to take the risk? If you die, you won't be able to control me anymore." Ruben said.

Winston shook with rage, refusing to take the gun. Ruben then fired a shot into the air, and upon discovering it was empty, immediately aimed it at himself again.

After three consecutive shots, Winston clutched his heart, lips turning purple, and conceded, "Fine, I won't interfere. You can marry whoever you want. You are not a qualified heir to the family!"

From then on, everyone knew Ruben had risked his life to marry Colby.

To spare her any discomfort, Colby hadn't attended any Gibson family events in three years of marriage.

Ruben insisted, "My wife doesn't need to worry about anyone's opinions."

Those who understood saw it as his way of cherishing Colby, while others thought she was unworthy of the family's favor. But now, he was parading his mistress openly?

That evening, Colby entered the banquet hall just as Ruben and another woman stepped into the elevator. As the doors closed, she saw them kiss.

Colby's mind went blank. Before witnessing it firsthand, she could convince herself it was all hearsay. After all, Ruben returned home every day, massaged her, applied pregnancy oils, and told stories to the baby. Even in meetings, he would take her calls, affectionately calling her "baby" and saying he missed her.

Every gesture and word assured Colby of his love.

Trembling, she stepped into the same elevator. The scent of Ruben's signature fragrance lingered in the air. This was a scent she loved during her pregnancy.

It soothed her nausea, so despite his allergy to perfumes, Ruben wore it daily for her comfort, enduring rashes as a result.

He said it was worth it to do anything for her.

But at this moment, Colby's sense of smell, which had become unusually sensitive due to her pregnancy, and she smelled the scent of another woman's perfume.

She staggered. It turned out that his bottom line could be lowered for different women. She was not his exception.

"Ava, are you really going to propose to Liam again?" My best friend, Sarah, looked at me with worried eyes. I just smiled and adjusted my brand-new dress. This was the fourth time; it had to be a success. An hour later, I was at the Grand Hotel, clutching the custom-made engagement ring for Liam. He was making a "huge announcement," and his best friend said he wanted me there. My heart raced, certain this was it-after three years and three rejections, he was finally ready to accept me. But then, standing beside him in the spotlight, was a beautiful woman I' d never seen before. "This is Chloe Green," Liam announced, "My fiancée." My world imploded. The room erupted in applause, but to me, it was deafening silence. Hundreds of eyes turned to me-pity, mockery, amusement. I was the city' s biggest joke, watching him slip a sparkling diamond on her finger. When I tried to show him the ring I' d brought, he sneered, "You thought I' d ever want something from you? You thought I' d ever want you?" Then he threw my precious, custom-made ring into the dark, freezing river below the balcony, challenging me: "Go get it, then. If you can find that ring in the river, I' ll believe you." Despite my fragile health and my doctor' s warning, I jumped. I found it, shivering and half-drowned, and returned to him, only for him to declare, "This scar... Every time I see it, it makes me sick. I would never marry a woman like you. Get out of my sight." The scar was from the kidney I' d donated to save his life. I died alone in an empty chapel days later, a "dying wish" marriage proposal from me twisted into his cruel, public humiliation. My ghost, tethered to his hatred, watched him publicly propose to Chloe while I faded into transparency, my very existence erased by his disgust. But a private investigator and my doctor had the truth about my sacrifice-my hidden kidney donation, my last letter to him. They revealed it all, forcing him to confront the monster he had been.

I married Clive Harrington, the coldest billionaire in Manhattan, under a strict contract that forbade any emotional burdens. When I needed a high-risk surgery to save my sight, I checked into the clinic alone, hiding the procedure from a husband who saw me as nothing more than a legal asset. I thought I could handle the darkness in silence. But while I was blind and bandaged in my hospital bed, my biological mother called, screaming that if I didn't produce a Harrington heir by the end of the fiscal year, she would cut off the life-saving treatments for my disabled sister. I was crawling on the cold hospital floor, desperately feeling for a cane I had dropped, when I touched a pair of expensive leather shoes. It was Clive. He was supposed to be in London closing a multi-million dollar deal, but there he was, watching his "contract wife" groveling in the dark like a beggar. He didn't walk away in disgust. He carried me to a five-thousand-dollar-a-night VIP suite and sat by my bed, listening in chilling silence as another voicemail from my mother filled the room, calling me a "useless broodmare" who was only worth the trust fund disbursements my marriage secured. I expected him to remind me of Clause 34B or hand me divorce papers now that I was "damaged goods." Instead, I felt his thumb brush a stray tear from my cheek, his presence shifting from a statue of ice into a predatory shield. "I thought I was just currency to you," I whispered, my voice trembling behind the gauze. "Just an investment." Clive didn't answer with words. He picked up his phone and called his head of legal with a single, terrifying command: "Kill the Douglas family’s credit lines. Every debt, every lien—trigger them all. If they want a war, I’ll give them a massacre." As he leaned down to kiss my bandaged forehead, I realized the contract was dead. My husband wasn't protecting an asset anymore; he was hunting the people who had dared to touch what belonged to him.

I arrived at the hotel with Julian's favorite takeout, ready to surprise my fiancé before our big merger. But the moment I swiped the keycard, the silence of the hallway felt heavy and wrong. Inside, a red-soled stiletto lay on the marble floor-the same one I'd watched my best friend Lila try on at Saks last week. Through the cracked bedroom door, I watched Julian's back arch as Lila looked me straight in the eye and smiled, wrapping her legs tighter around him to mock my heartbreak. I fled to the penthouse to hide, only to find Grafton, Julian's "crippled" brother, waiting in the dark. To my horror, the man who was supposed to be paralyzed stood up from his wheelchair, gripped my chin with cold fingers, and forced me to sign a contract that gave him control of my family's shares. He knew about my mother's secret medical bills and used them to buy my silence, effectively turning my life into a calculated game of corporate chess. The betrayal tasted like acid, and the injustice of it all burned in my throat. My fiancé was a liar, my best friend was a thief, and the man now controlling my fate was a predator who had been faking his disability for years. I couldn't understand how everyone I trusted had turned out to be a monster. I was trapped between a man who cheated on me and a man who wanted to own me, with no way out and no one to turn to. But when Julian came looking for me, Grafton didn't hide; he stood tall, looming over me with a possessive glint in his eyes. "Help me destroy Julian," I rasped, realizing that to survive the Faulkner men, I had to become the most dangerous player of them all.
