Chapter 1

Seraphina POV:

My husband put another woman's son on his shoulders at our family's most sacred event, a place reserved for the heir, a place my own daughter had only dreamed of, and as the world around me went silent, my phone buzzed with a text from him: "I see you. Remember your place. Don't embarrass me."

The nausea that rolled through my stomach had nothing to do with pregnancy and everything to do with the five years of my life I'd spent playing a role I was never meant for.

"Mommy, when is Daddy coming to play with me?"

I looked down at Liliana, my five-year-old daughter, whose bright blue eyes were a perfect copy of her father's. A painful echo, because Aidan used to look at me with that same innocent adoration.

"He's talking to a very important business partner, sweetie," I lied, forcing a smile that felt like cracking porcelain.

An hour ago, his text had been much clearer. *"Keep the kid busy. Don't let her bother me."*

I smoothed down the front of my simple sundress, a plain, off-the-rack thing I'd chosen specifically to not outshine him. For five years, I had been Sarah Miller, the quiet, unassuming wife of Aidan Gallagher, a rising soldier in the Vitali family. I had sanded down my own edges, dulled my own shine, all to protect his pathetic, fragile pride.

My gaze drifted across the sprawling lawn of the Vitali estate, past the laughing faces of soldiers and capos, to the champagne tower where he stood. Aidan. My husband. He was laughing, his head thrown back, one hand resting possessively on the lower back of Cassandra Thorne.

And on his shoulders, perched like a king, was her son, Leo. He was squealing with delight, reaching for the highest glass of champagne, a privilege, an honor, reserved only for the children of the family's inner circle.

My breath caught in my throat. The cheerful music of the string quartet, the clinking glasses, the summer breeze-it all faded into a dull, distant roar. There was only that image, burned into my mind: my husband, his mistress, and her son, forming the perfect family portrait where my daughter and I should have been.

Then came the buzz of his text. "I see you. Remember your place. Don't embarrass me."

My hands began to shake, a tremor starting in my fingertips and radiating up my arms. My place. For five years, my place had been in the shadows, propping him up, making him look good, ensuring no one ever suspected that the indebted, street-level enforcer had married the Don's only daughter.

"Mommy, let's go play croquet!" Liliana tugged at my hand, her small voice pulling me from the icy void.

I swallowed the lump of acid in my throat and let her lead me toward the game set up on the lower lawn. We fell in line behind other families. And, of course, there they were, just ahead of us. Aidan and Cassandra, laughing as Leo tried to swing a mallet that was too big for him.

It was my turn. I took a steadying breath, trying to focus on the simple geometry of the game, on the red ball at my feet. But my eyes kept straying to them, to the way his fingers brushed her arm, the way she leaned into him.

Then it was Cassandra's turn. She swung her mallet with a theatrical flourish, sending her blue ball flying. It rolled directly into the path of my feet. I didn't have time to react. My ankle twisted, and I went down, hard, on the manicured grass. A sharp pain shot up my leg.

Liliana screamed, a terrified, piercing sound.

For a split second, I thought he would turn to me. I thought I saw a flicker of concern in his eyes.

I was wrong.

He bypassed me completely, rushing to Cassandra's side. "Are you okay?" he asked, his voice thick with worry. "Did that clumsy woman startle you?"

He didn't even look at me. He was checking Cassandra for injuries she couldn't possibly have sustained.

Then, his gaze finally fell on me, lying on the ground, my daughter sobbing beside me. His face was a mask of cold fury.

"For Christ's sake, Sarah," he snapped, his voice loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. "Can't you even walk in a straight line? You're making a scene."

He offered a hand not to me, but to Cassandra, helping her stand straighter. Low murmurs rippled through the onlookers, the lower-ranking soldiers and their wives. "What a gentleman," one of them whispered.

Aidan's voice boomed across the lawn, full of false cheer. "Don't you worry, Cassandra. Leo, my boy. I'm going to win this game for you two. We'll get you that prize."

He never looked at me again.

He just turned his back, picked up his mallet, and left me on the ground as my daughter's heartbroken sobs filled the air.

I woke up in a penthouse suite at the Pierre with a hangover from hell and a naked man who looked like he'd been carved from marble. Thinking he was a high-end escort I couldn't afford, I left my last hundred dollars and a petty note on the nightstand. "Service was acceptable. Keep the change." But when I rushed home to check on my dying father, I found the locks changed and my boyfriend, Chad, draped over my stepsister on the landing. My stepmother, Meredith, didn't even look up from her coffee as she handed me a legal folder. She told me to sign away my inheritance or she'd stop paying for my father's life support. The hospital called seconds later, demanding fifty thousand dollars by the end of the day, or they'd pull the plug. Meredith had already arranged my "payment": a dinner with Boris Gorsky, a predator who collected young women like trophies. I was being sold to a monster to keep my father alive, standing in a thrift-store dress while my family laughed at my ruin. I didn't understand how my life had collapsed in twelve hours, or how my own blood could put a price tag on a man's life. I sat at that restaurant trembling, waiting for the man who would buy my soul. Then the man from the hotel walked in. It wasn't Gorsky; it was August Sanders, the billionaire CEO of a media empire, and he was holding my hundred-dollar bill. He didn't want an apology; he wanted a contract wife for a year. He slid a confirmation for a five-hundred-thousand-dollar hospital deposit across the table and handed me a fountain pen. "Welcome to the firm, Mrs. Sanders." I signed the paper with a shaking hand, knowing I was trading my freedom for my father's life. But as August handed me his black card, I realized I finally had the weapon I needed to destroy the people who thought I was nothing.

I was drowning in the pool, chlorine burning my lungs, but my fated mate, Jax, swam right past me. He scooped up Catalina, the swim team captain who was faking a cramp, and carried her to safety like she was made of glass. When I dragged myself out, shivering and humiliated, Jax didn't offer a hand. Instead, he glared at me with cold hazel eyes. "Stop acting like a victim, Eliana," he spat in front of the whole pack. "You're just jealous." He was the Alpha Heir, and I was the unshifted failure. He broke our bond piece by piece, culminating at the sacred Moon Tree where he slashed through our carved initials to replace them with hers. But the final blow wasn't emotional; it was lethal. Catalina threw my car keys into a pond laced with Wolfsbane. As the poison paralyzed my limbs and I sank into the dark water, unable to breathe, I saw Jax standing on the bank. "Stop playing games!" he shouted at the ripples. He turned his back and walked away, leaving me to die. I survived, but the girl who loved him didn't. I finally accepted the rejection he never had the guts to speak. Jax thought I would crawl back in a week. He thought I was nothing without the pack's protection. He was wrong. I moved to New York and walked into a dance studio, right into the arms of a True Alpha named Daryl. And when I finally shifted, I wasn't a weak Omega. I was a White Wolf. By the time Jax realized what he had thrown away, I was already a Queen.

The video was only fifteen seconds long: a male burlesque dancer, all glitter and bravado, tearing off his pants. My finger slipped, and the screen flashed: Video sent to Liam. Panic seized me, cold and immediate. Liam, my workaholic, rarely-home, contract husband, recipient of my perfectly-crafted façade. I fumbled for my phone, desperately typing a lie: "Oh my god, Liam, you will not believe where Ashley dragged me tonight. I am so disgusted." His reply came instantly: "Okay." Just "Okay." No questions, no suspicion. He bought it. My easy escape was secure. But then, across the pulsing, chaotic nightclub, I saw him. Liam. He lifted his glass, his eyes dark and unwavering, a silent warning cutting through the noise. My perfect, distant husband, who was supposed to be a continent away, was here, watching me. He knew. The easy dance I had perfected–the detached, separate lives–was crumbling. The comfortable silence of our contract was shattered. "Having fun?" he drawled, a glint in his eyes I' d never seen before, cutting through my desperate lie. "I see your friend finally convinced you to enjoy the \'decadent\' lifestyle." He knew. He had known all along, and for some reason, he had played along. Why? I watched him approach, towering over everyone, and for the first time, I felt a knot of fear and something else entirely-a thrill-because this wasn't part of the contract. This was real. As I clung to his arm, playing the doting wife for his colleagues, every interaction felt charged with a new, unsettling current. This wasn't the escape I' d planned; it was something far more complicated. The man I married for freedom was suddenly making me feel trapped, yet strangely, incredibly seen. Who was Liam Patterson, really? And why did his silent scrutiny feel more intimate than any embrace?

As I lay on the floor of our manor, bleeding out from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, I used my last ounce of strength to call my husband, Cole. I begged him for help, my vision blurring. But the only thing I heard was the clinking of champagne glasses and his mistress's giggle in the background. "Stop the drama, June," Cole snapped, his voice cold. "We're about to go on stage. Don't call again." He hung up, leaving me to die alone on the Persian rug while he accepted an award with another woman on his arm. I woke up in the hospital days later. My baby was gone. They had removed my fallopian tube. Cole finally arrived, smelling of expensive scotch and his mistress's perfume. He didn't hug me. He didn't cry. Instead, he leaned over my hospital bed, pressing his knee into the mattress until my fresh stitches tore open and bled. "You embarrassed me by calling an ambulance," he hissed. "My mistress, Alycia, says you're faking it. Clean yourself up." He left me bleeding again to go announce a $10 million donation to Alycia's "groundbreaking" medical research. I stared at the TV screen, numb. The research Alycia was taking credit for? It was mine. I wrote that patent years ago under a pseudonym. They thought I was just a poor, orphan housewife who needed Cole's money to survive. They had no idea I was actually a billionaire scientist hiding my identity. I pulled the IV needle out of my arm. A drop of blood fell onto the divorce papers I had been hiding. I didn't wipe it off. I signed my name right over it. Then I walked into the bank, reactivated my dormant account with $128 million, and bought the penthouse directly overlooking Cole's house. The mourning widow is dead. The avenger is born.

I went to the City Clerk’s office for a routine copy of my marriage license to finalize a trust fund audit. I expected a simple piece of paper, but the clerk’s pitying look told me my entire life was a lie. "The license was never finalized, Ms. Oliver. In the eyes of the state, you are single." The three-hundred-guest wedding at the Plaza and the Vogue features meant nothing. My husband, Gray Cooley, had intentionally filed the documents with a "procedural defect" so he could discard me without a legal divorce. Moments later, an iCloud invite titled "Our Little Secret" popped up on my screen. It was a photo of my best friend, Brylee, holding a positive pregnancy test at our Hamptons estate. Gray’s text to her was the final blow: "Happy anniversary, babe. This baby is the best gift. Once the trust unlocks today, we’re done with the charade." I soon discovered they were even stealing my career, reassigning my architectural masterpiece to Brylee while preparing my eviction notice. Gray's mother called me a "barren mule" in a leaked recording, mocking the infertility I suffered after saving Gray’s life in a construction accident. I wasn't a wife; I was a three-year placeholder used to secure his inheritance. How could the man I bled for treat me like a disposable prop? How could my best friend carry his child while pretending to comfort me through my darkest moments? The betrayal burned until it turned into a cold, hard stone of fury. I didn't cry. Instead, I walked into the penthouse of the Barretts, the Cooleys' most powerful rivals. I signed a marriage contract with Kane Barrett, the man the tabloids called the "Beast of Wall Street." "I want a wedding," I told his father, my voice steady and lethal. "Bigger than the one I had with Gray." If they wanted me gone, they would have to watch me become the woman who owns their world.

"Eve," he called, placing wet inhumane kisses on my neck as his strong but warm hands held my tiny waist. I closed my eyes. "Yes...sir?" I moaned helplessly, feeling the harsh tingles in between my legs. "Eve," he called again, trailing wet kisses towards my ear. "Ad....Adrian," I breathed. "What am I doing?" he asked, nibbling my ear lobe. "Touching....touching me?" "I shouldn't be touching you," he said, exploring my neck like a thirsty vampire. "I....i want you to," I stuttered shamelessly. He wrapped my neck with his hand, choking me slightly. Oh, heavens. "My son is crazy about you," he said, gripping me tightly. "I don't want him," I whispered, taking in his wicked kisses on my neck. "You should.
