On the day she was meant to marry, Alana's fiancé ran off with another woman without any warning at all. Left with no choice, she entered a random matching system and was paired with a supposedly poor driver. Mocked by her ex and his new wife, she only laughed. "Regret? Not a chance." Everyone thought she was delusional. Until the day of her company's global celebration, when her "broke" husband stepped onto the stage under the spotlight, holding a rare diamond ring. "My dearest wife, it's my turn to take care of you." Only then did she realize-she had married the richest man alive!
Alana Parker and her boyfriend made a plan: the day they graduated, they'd go straight to City Hall and get married.
Alana had always been confident. Pretty enough, a solid four-year relationship, everything seemed fine.
Unfortunately, her boyfriend dumped her on the very day they were supposed to register.
After waiting outside City Hall for what felt like forever, Alana finally cursed under her breath, grinding her teeth, "That asshole. He waits until I'm standing right outside City Hall-gets a damn phone call-and suddenly he's out? Couldn't he have figured this out yesterday?"
If he'd broken up with her even a day before, she would've never ended up in this situation. With her looks, finding someone to marry wasn't impossible.
At least she could've chosen somebody she already knew instead of standing here to get paired with some random stranger through the government matching system.
And honestly, what were the chances she'd end up with a handsome husband who was gentle and domestic through something like this?
Alana had never been lucky. Whenever she picked a checkout line, it always moved the slowest. The one time she forgot her umbrella, it poured. Every raffle she'd joined ended with somebody else winning.
A government matching machine suddenly giving her a decent husband sounded impossible.
At this point, she'd take anyone. Just-no violent types, no smokers, no bald guys, and please, not ugly. Anything better than that, and she'd already call it a miracle.
With only a few minutes left before the matching window closed down, Alana finally stepped inside the building.
The birth rate had tanked, the elderly population was exploding, and the government decided the only solution was to get extreme. Once you turned twenty-two, marriage wasn't a choice anymore. Even colleges got in on it-no spouse, no degree.
There was still another option, but it came with a brutal cost. Anyone determined to stay single had to pay ten thousand dollars every month.
For people who refused marriage, ignored the tax, and declined the spouse chosen for them, the punishment became even worse. Their degrees would be withheld permanently. Without a diploma, respectable companies wouldn't even consider hiring them. A future like that left almost no room for stability.
There was no room for Alana to back out now. Her savings couldn't even cover a tax fee that high.
She still had to graduate. After that, she needed stable work. Throwing away her future over a marriage arrangement wasn't worth it.
From behind the counter, the clerk glanced at Alana, who had stepped aside to pray with her eyes shut and both hands pressed together. The woman clicked her tongue. "Miss, can you make it quick? We're about to close for the day."
A manual draw only happened once. If Alana failed to complete it in time, the system would automatically pair her with a random match.
After letting out a slow breath, she lifted her hand toward the machine. Her finger shook before she finally pressed the button.
Rows of numbers flashed across the screen one after another.
Several seconds later, the spinning stopped.
"Congratulations, Ms. Parker! You've drawn Match Number 99999. Please head to the service desk to claim your partner's information. We sincerely wish you both a happy marriage and a lasting union."
Shock covered the clerk's face the longer she stared at the number.
Repeated-digit matches were incredibly rare.
Those numbers only went to top-tier candidates. People with exceptional education, appearance, ability, and family status usually received them. Among those combinations, 99999 was considered one of the hardest to get.
The woman looked back at Alana with clear envy in her eyes. "Young lady, your luck is unbelievable. You really hit the jackpot with this one."
None of it made sense to Alana.
They hadn't even shown her the man's profile yet. She didn't even know his name. How could the clerk already be certain he was some incredible catch?
Still, that wasn't what mattered most. Her internship was about to end. Once she secured the marriage certificate, the company would officially hire her as a full-time employee. That alone meant a monthly salary of six thousand.
And honestly, she owed part of that six thousand to this whole marriage thing. So Alana decided that as long as the guy looked normal and wasn't a complete disaster, she could make this work.
Money wasn't even a major concern for her. Even if his income barely covered anything, she could still support the two of them once she started working full-time.
The clerk returned with a folder and placed it in front of her. "Ms. Parker, this contains your match's profile. We've already contacted him, so he'll be here soon. Please head over to the lounge and wait for him there."
Without saying much, Alana accepted the file and flipped it open.
The moment she saw the name inside, her movements stopped.
She read it again. Something about it immediately felt familiar.
Wait-wasn't that the name of the guy who just became the richest man in the country?
