On the night she was supposed to become a billionaire's wife, Arabella Laurent discovered the truth about the man waiting for her at the altar and walked away from a fortune worth billions. By sunrise, the most coveted heiress in the country had vanished. She abandoned her name, her family, her inheritance, and the life that had been chosen for her. All she wanted was a quiet life where nobody could tell her who to love or what she was worth. Then she met Damien Devereux. Powerful. Ruthless. Untouchable. He was the last man Arabella should have trusted, but one unforgettable night was enough to make her forget every reason she had learned to run. She disappeared before he could learn her real name. What Damien didn't know was that the mysterious woman who walked out of his life was carrying his child. Months later, he finds her. And the woman he has never been able to forget turns out to be the runaway heiress whose family he has every reason to despise. Now Damien wants answers. Arabella wants freedom. And neither of them is prepared for what happens when desire turns into something neither can escape. Because she ran from one man who wanted to control her future. She never expected to fall in love with another man powerful enough to own the world. This time, running won't save her.
Arabella Laurent was supposed to walk down the aisle in less than half an hour.
Instead, she stood alone, clutching a tablet that had just shattered the future she believed was hers.
Her grip tightened on the cold device.
On its screen, line after line of transactions marched past - all under the Laurent Group's name, all routed through a maze of companies she'd never even heard mentioned.
She scrolled. Once. Twice. The numbers only got bleaker.
Millions siphoned away from Laurent Holdings over eight months. All funneled into private investment companies, each bearing a different name. On paper, they looked unrelated. But she recognized the pattern in the ownership records. It all pointed to one person.
Victor Laurent.
Her fiancé. The man she was supposed to marry today, in front of hundreds.
All at once, her breath caught.
"No." The word barely made a sound.
She zoomed in on the last page.
There it was - Victor's signature.
Her stomach twisted, but she didn't move. The mirror in front of her showed an immaculate bride: ivory silk gown her father had chosen with Parisian drama, veil resting perfectly, diamonds so bright they looked almost unreal.
The picture of perfection. Maybe a bit too perfect. Because under all that, something inside her broke clean in two.
Her phone buzzed.
A new notification. Another document.
This time, the heading was a draft agreement about the Laurent family trust. Her own name at the top. Her inheritance spelled out, section by section. And, bigger than anything, Victor's company listed as controlling partner.
Her heart slammed against her ribcage.
The marriage wasn't about love. It wasn't about family.
It was Victor's last signature on the paperwork.
After the vows, he'd have everything her grandfather tried to protect. The inheritance she grew up hearing was too vast, too powerful for her to manage alone.
Her hand shook.
So this was it. Not a wedding. A negotiation.
She grabbed her phone. "Where is Victor?"
Elise glanced up from arranging her dress train. "Mr. Laurent is downstairs with the guests."
"Get him. Now."
Elise wavered. "Now?"
"Now."
Arabella didn't have to raise her voice. Elise disappeared.
Five minutes later, Victor entered the suite. He looked like the perfect groom - black tuxedo, white shirt, silver cuff links, smile lined with certainty.
He closed the door softly. "Arabella?"
She turned to face him, tablet raised.
All the polish drained from his smile. He glanced at the screen. For a split second, something shifted in his eyes. Recognition, not surprise.
"You shouldn't be looking at financial documents on your wedding day," he said.
She stared. "That's your answer?"
"You're upset."
"I'm asking you a question, Victor."
He sighed. "Business arrangements like this aren't always easy to understand."
Arabella's heart dropped. "So you knew."
"Of course I knew."
The calm in his voice stung far more than denial.
She closed the gap between them. "You've been moving Laurent money into companies you control."
"I'm restructuring assets."
"Without my father's approval?"
He didn't answer.
She kept going. "Without mine?"
"You don't control the company yet."
That hit harder than anything else. It felt final.
She stared at him. "What did you just say?"
His jaw clenched. "The Laurent assets were always going to be yours. This protects them."
"Protects them?" She laughed - just once, sharp, humorless. "You moved millions into your own companies."
"They're designed to grow the family's wealth."
"They're designed to make you richer, Victor."
"You think that?"
"I don't have to think." She held up the tablet. "The proof is right here."
He stepped closer, voice quieter. "You're emotional. It's the wedding."
She backed away. "No. I'm standing here because I just learned I've been a means to an end. You've been planning to take control of my inheritance."
"Your inheritance isn't taken-"
"So why does this agreement give you authority after our wedding?"
He stayed silent.
"Answer me," Arabella pushed.
"It's complicated."
"No, Victor. It's not." She dropped the tablet to her side and stared him down. "You needed to marry me to get those assets."
His face hardened, but he didn't raise his voice. "Be careful."
That warning chilled her more than if he'd shouted.
Three years. She'd convinced herself Victor was driven. She'd called it love - his need to shield her, his habit of making her decisions for her.
Now she saw the truth. He didn't want Arabella. He wanted Laurent.
"Did my father know?" she asked. He didn't reply. She swallowed. "Did he?"
The door opened. Her father, Julian Laurent, filled the space.
He was a man used to command. The Laurent name had always come first with him.
His eyes flicked from Victor to the tablet in Arabella's hand. He knew.
A cold stillness settled in her chest. "You knew."
Julian closed the door. "Arabella-"
"You knew."
"This isn't the place for this."
"Then where?" Her voice broke. "Where am I supposed to ask why my fiancé is moving family money into his own companies?"
Julian's face went hard. "Lower your voice."
She stared at him, stunned. "I'm getting married."
"Yes."
"To someone who's been stealing from us."
"He's not a thief." Julian's voice was stone. Victor stayed silent.
Arabella looked at them both. "You both knew."
Julian stepped forward. "Victor has been stabilizing our investments."
"By transferring them to himself?"
"By consolidating them."
"And after I marry him?"
A pause. "Your marriage simplifies things."
No more pretending.
Something inside Arabella faded away.
"You want me to marry him."
"I want you to protect this family."
"By handing him my inheritance?"
"By doing what's necessary."
Arabella gazed at her father. "You promised I wouldn't be forced to marry for the company."
"I promised to do what's best for you."
"That's not the same."
Julian's face stayed cold. "The Laurent family can't survive another fight - not now."
She shook her head. "So it's always about the company."
"It's always been about the company," he said. Quiet. Final.
She looked down at her ring. For a second, she remembered when Victor slipped it on, how he promised it meant forever. Now it felt like handcuffs.
She twisted the ring free. Victor noticed.
"Arabella." He said her name gently, but she was done caring.
The diamond sparkled in the light one last time as she set it down.
"I'm not marrying him."
Silence. Julian didn't move, but his face darkened. "You don't have a choice."
She looked up. Something in her had changed. "I do." Her voice was steady. "My name is Laurent."
"And it's mine," she finished.
He stepped in, stern. "Security's waiting. The guests are here. Investors traveled the world for this wedding. You need to walk down that aisle."
"No."
"Arabella."
"No."
Stronger now, her voice sharp. "I'd rather lose every Laurent dollar than spend a lifetime knowing I gave myself away for it."
Victor finally spoke. "You're making a mistake."
She picked up the tablet. "This is the first real decision I've ever made for myself."
She turned for the door.
Her father caught her wrist. "Don't do this."
She glanced at his hand, then at him. "Let go."
He squeezed. "Think about what you're losing."
"My freedom?" She pulled herself away. "No. I'm finally taking it back."
She opened the door.
The hallway outside overflowed with wedding staff, nervous security, flowers, and silence heavy enough to break.
Everyone was waiting. But not for this.
Arabella walked through, shoes thudding against the marble - one step, then another. Unstoppable.
Elise scrambled after her. "Miss Laurent?"
Arabella stopped.
The girl's eyes were wide. "Where are you going?"
She glanced toward the ballroom doors. Behind them, hundreds of people, an orchestra, the life she thought she'd chosen.
But she wasn't that person anymore.
She looked at Elise, almost calm. "Tell them the bride has disappeared."
"But-" Elise started.
Without another glance, Arabella turned away.
Music burst from the ballroom as the doors opened. Laughter, flashes from cameras, the hum of expectation.
She paused for one last look at the life she was leaving.
Then she walked in the other direction.
Victor appeared in the hall behind her. "Arabella!"
She didn't turn back.
Her veil trailed behind her as she disappeared around the corner.
For the first time, nobody knew where she was headed. Not her father. Not Victor. Not the crowd waiting for a storybook ending.
And by the time they realized she was gone for good, Arabella Laurent would no longer be the obedient heiress they'd groomed her to be.
She was running from everything her name had given her.
And she didn't plan on being found.
