Aubrey works for the national intelligence service and is often assigned various tasks in which some require her to go undercover, hiding her identity in order to complete her investigation. But just when it was time for her to go on her paid leave, an order from above came in. She was asked to infiltrate the werewolves' pack because a serial murder case had been linked to the werewolves. Her job was to find who the killer may be, and her suspect happens to be the Alpha of the pack. Aubrey was thrilled but also afraid about her new quest at the same time, because she knew how dangerous werewolves could be. And she knew they wouldn't spare her once her cover was blown. So, she did everything possible to camouflage herself, so her mission could be successful without her losing her life. She picked the best disguise she could think of-changing her gender. Alpha Logan knew there was something off about the new secretary who was hired for him. He could smell his mate distinctively on him, but being a straight guy, he felt maybe his new secretary must be related to his mate, so he decided to get close to him and find out how he was related to the mate he had been dying to meet. Will Alpha Logan be able to detect that Aubrey is actually his mate disguised as a male? Or will Aubrey be able to keep her cover from getting blown by doing a perfect and clean job before disappearing from the pack? Or does the moon goddess have another plan prepared for them?

Alpha's Undercover Mate Chapter 1 The Big Ruse

Aubrey.

I only had a suitcase with me. I love traveling light. And I was supposed to be an oddball here, so I only brought a few clothes that would make me look really odd. I rechecked my phone to see if the guy I texted had read my text already. The sun was scorching, and the cream the director gave me was not making my stay under the sun a pleasant one, either.

"Are you Aub?" A young-looking man with a baby face and golden asked. I could tell the sun was affecting him, too, from the way his eyes were half closed.

I nodded, still observing him. And yeah, I picked Aub because, apart from the fact that it suited my name, the real owner of the name shared the same height and build with me. So, using his identity wasn't hard.

He reached for my suitcase. "That seems too big for you to handle," he said before pointing towards the big storey building before us. "The alpha is waiting."

At the mention of alpha, shivers ran down my spine. I had never met an alpha before. Ever since the peace treaty between the werewolves and humans, I've always wanted to meet at least a few werewolves, but I never got the chance to. Now, I'm walking with my two legs into their den in a disguise, to investigate the alpha, whom I'd be working for. I'd be dead if my cover were blown.

I was brought out of my thoughts by fingers snapping before my face. "Are you even with me?"

"Yeah," I said quickly. "What's your name?" Well, now he knew I wasn't with him at all.

He smiled. Omg! He's so cute. "My name is Jeremy. I'm the alpha's third in command and also his favorite cousin."

I'd have rolled my eyes on a normal day at his last four words, but his cuteness wouldn't allow me.

I was surprised to see an elevator in the building. Although the building looked big from the outside, it also looked rather simple. But it wasn't just an elevator, I could see like four. Not to mention the exquisite interior decor. Just how rich were these shapeshifters?

"I'm sure you get it a lot that you look frail," he pointed out as we stepped into the elevator. I raised my chin and eyebrows, unsure of how to respond to him, since I didn't get that a lot. "Don't take any offense," he continued, raising his free hand in the air. "It's just that if I had not done the background check on you myself, I'd have mistaken you for a girl."

The next thing I knew was Jeremy's hand on my back, patting me gently as I was coughing. I couldn't believe I let his words catch me off guard.

"Are you okay?" He asked, his eyes searching the elevator. I could tell he was searching for water. He was extremely concerned about someone he had met less than ten minutes ago.

"We are here," Jeremy said as we stepped out of the elevator. My cough had seized now, and I could only hope no one would mention that I looked like a girl again throughout the rest of my screening process with the alpha.

We walked straight before he stopped in front of a massive black wooden door on his right. It must be the alpha's office.

Without knocking, he pushed the door open, revealing how nice the interior of the office was. I knew the interior of the room would be nothing short of exquisite, given how magnificent the door alone was. I had to admit that the office was ten times better than any of my superiors back at the NIS.

I felt another presence in the room with us even before Jeremy turned to his left and bowed swiftly. It's the alpha.

"If you don't want to lose your life, pay your utmost respect to the alpha."

Kate's words rang in my head. I bowed below ninety degrees immediately. I didn't want to lose my head even before my mission started.

"Really, Jeremy?" I didn't know what exactly he meant, but the sound of his voice sent shivers down my spine. I've heard and read all sorts about the alpha of this pack, but no one had even mentioned how cold and sharp his voice sounded, that it could pierce even the very soul.

Jeremy seemed to be as confused as I was because he raised his eyebrows at the alpha's question.

"Is he supposed to be my secretary?" He stood up slowly from his seat. Oh my god! I don't know what Greek gods look like, but you could say he looked like one. And the way he moved, you'd know he was moving with a massive aura oozing from his body. "I can barely see him?"

"Excuse me!?" I blurted out before realizing I wasn't supposed to talk back at the alpha. I bowed my head immediately. So much for getting the job done.

My head was still lowered, but I could hear his heavy strides coming towards me. "Raise your head."

I obeyed.

"I thought you said it doesn't matter if he's a late bloomer or not," Jeremy finally spoke, but his words were not enough to break the tension between the alpha and me at the moment. I couldn't place my finger on it, but there was something dark in his eyes that was locked onto mine.

Did he catch on already? Oh no! I knew the alpha tends to be sharp and smart, but I could swear I put in a lot of work into my disguise. Even my friend fell for it.

"Not when he looks this weak."

The director must have omitted adding that alphas are rude and condescending in the file he gave to me.

I cleared my throat. "Alpha Logan," I said, taking a step back directly at his face since he was towering over me already. "I may look weak, but you can check my records and my experiences as a secretary. I am good at what I do." Of course, he could check my forged records and see. And calling me weak was quite hilarious, given I'm one of the best agents in my field. But, he didn't need to know that.

"Yes, he's right. There are testimonials about how good he is, too," Jeremy added, earning a smile of relief from me.

Logan scoffed. "Your experience and weakness are not even the issue now."

"Then, what is?" I asked, wondering what fault he was about to pick again. As I had already read and heard, he was extremely hard to please.

"Why do I smell my mate on you?"

"What!?" Jeremy and I chorused.

I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I was sitting in the Presidential Suite of The Pierre, wearing a Vera Wang gown worth more than most people earn in a decade. It was supposed to be the wedding of the century, the final move to merge two of Manhattan's most powerful empires. Then my phone buzzed. It was an Instagram Story from my fiancé, Jameson. He was at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris with a caption that read: "Fuck the chains. Chasing freedom." He hadn't just gotten cold feet; he had abandoned me at the altar to run across the world. My father didn't come in to comfort me. He burst through the door roaring about a lost acquisition deal, telling me the Holland Group would strip our family for parts if the ceremony didn't happen by noon. My stepmother wailed about us becoming the laughingstock of the Upper East Side. The Holland PR director even suggested I fake a "panic attack" to make myself look weak and sympathetic to save their stock price. Then Jameson’s sleazy cousin, Pierce, walked in with a lopsided grin, offering to "step in" and marry me just to get his hands on my assets. I looked at them and realized I wasn't a daughter or a bride to anyone in that room. I was a failed asset, a bouncing check, a girl whose own father told her to go to Paris and "beg" the man who had just publicly humiliated her. The girl who wanted to be loved died in that mirror. I realized that if I was going to be sold to save a merger, I was going to sell myself to the one who actually controlled the money. I marched past my parents and walked straight into the VIP holding room. I looked the most powerful man in the room—Jameson’s cold, ruthless uncle, Fletcher Holland—dead in the eye and threw the iPad on the table. "Jameson is gone," I said, my voice as hard as stone. "Marry me instead."
