At the family banquet welcoming the return of the true daughter, my wealthy adoptive parents publicly announced that I should transfer the shares in my name to the "wronged" true daughter. All the guests praised my parents for their fairness and congratulated the true daughter on her hardships finally coming to an end. Relatives gathered around to persuade me. "You enjoyed twenty years of wealth that should have belonged to her. Giving up the shares is the right thing to do. You should know how to be grateful." My husband Javier Andrews, married to me for only half a year, also stepped forward and gently advised me. "Michelle, this originally belonged to your sister. Give it back to her. From now on, I'll take care of you." Everyone praised him for his deep affection and commended my adoptive parents for their justice, waiting for me to put on a show of sisterly love. Instead, I picked up the red wine from the table, walked over to the pitiful-looking true daughter, and smiling, poured the wine over her head. The entire room erupted in shock. My adoptive father, Kaiden Walsh, trembled with rage, pointing at me and cursing. "You ungrateful wretch!" Javier looked utterly disappointed. "Are you really that jealous of her? Do you have to make such an ugly scene?" I casually set down the empty glass and said lightly. "Ugly? I think this color suits her quite well."

Chapter 1

At the family banquet welcoming the return of the true daughter, my wealthy adoptive parents publicly announced that I should transfer the shares in my name to the "wronged" true daughter.

All the guests praised my parents for their fairness and congratulated the true daughter on her hardships finally coming to an end.

Relatives gathered around to persuade me. "You enjoyed twenty years of wealth that should have belonged to her. Giving up the shares is the right thing to do. You should know how to be grateful."

My husband Javier Andrews, married to me for only half a year, also stepped forward and gently advised me. "Michelle, this originally belonged to your sister. Give it back to her. From now on, I'll take care of you."

Everyone praised him for his deep affection and commended my adoptive parents for their justice, waiting for me to put on a show of sisterly love.

Instead, I picked up the red wine from the table, walked over to the pitiful-looking true daughter, and smiling, poured the wine over her head.

The entire room erupted in shock.

My adoptive father, Kaiden Walsh, trembled with rage, pointing at me and cursing. "You ungrateful wretch!"

Javier looked utterly disappointed. "Are you really that jealous of her? Do you have to make such an ugly scene?"

I casually set down the empty glass and said lightly. "Ugly? I think this color suits her quite well."

...

Kaiden's slap stopped just short of my cheek. I even felt the cool breeze from his palm, but I did not flinch.

Javier stepped forward. "Michelle, stop this nonsense and apologize to your sister right now!"

The disappointment in his eyes was thick and unbreakable, as if he looked at an unreasonable madwoman.

I brushed his hand aside, my gaze passing over him to land on Brenna Walsh.

She huddled in the arms of my adoptive mother Talia Walsh, soaked through, with droplets of red wine clinging to her hair, looking disheveled and pitiful.

The guests' whispers merged into sharp blades that stabbed at my heart.

"Michelle is truly an ungrateful woman. The Walsh family treated her so well, yet she treats their real daughter like this."

"Exactly. She enjoyed twenty years of luxury that wasn't hers. Now that she's asked to return a little, it's like taking her life."

"Andrews is unlucky too, marrying such a jealous woman. He's going to suffer in the future."

Seeing that I still refused to bow my head, Kaiden's chest heaved violently with anger. "I have no daughter like you! Get out of here right now!"

Talia held Brenna and cried out to me. "Michelle, how could you do this to Brenna? She suffered for twenty years! Is your heart made of stone?"

I looked at this picture of the three of them in happy harmony and felt only deep irony.

Twenty years of upbringing turned into chains of debt the moment their biological daughter appeared.

I said nothing, turned, and started to leave.

As I passed Javier, he grabbed my arm. "Where do you think you're going? This isn't resolved yet. You can't just walk away."

I shook off his hand. "Let go."

"Michelle!" He lowered his voice with a warning tone. "What good will it do you to fall out with the Walsh family now?"

I looked at his handsome face, the one I once loved to my very core, but now it only made me feel sick.

From the day Brenna returned, his scale had tipped completely.

He no longer acted as the Javier who peeled shrimp for me, carried me on his back in the rain, or promised to love me forever.

He became the Walsh family's son-in-law, Brenna's protector.

And I became nothing more than an obstacle.

I ignored him and walked straight toward the door.

Behind me came Kaiden's furious roar. "Freeze all her cards immediately! I'd like to see what she's worth without the Walsh family!"

My steps did not falter as I left that gilded cage.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. ""Mr. Kensington,"" the nurse's voice cracked, ""your wife... she's critical."" A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. ""Liam is in the shower,"" Seraphina's voice purred. ""Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low."" Then, Liam's bored voice: ""If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning."" Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

When he finally tried to lock her in a gilded cage to "protect" her, Sienna didn't just walk away-she jumped from his moving Rolls-Royce to reclaim her own crown. While she bled in the shadows to keep his empire from crumbling, he dismissed her as a mousy tutor. The humiliation was absolute as her family mocked her as a "charity case" and Julian treated her like a fragile doll. She realized Julian didn't want a partner; he wanted a possession to hide in a vault. The discovery that he would never trust the woman beneath the mask was the final betrayal. He only loved the version of her he could control. Sienna finally chose to burn the bridge. After neutralizing an assassin in a designer gown, she tossed her wedding ring into a puddle and vanished into the night. She wasn't running from the fire; she was going back to the desert to finish the war. The Queen has left the board, and the King is coming for blood.

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.
