Have you ever dated a man the whole world idolized? I have. Not just one, but four. Every one of my ex-boyfriends now plays for the most prestigious football club in the world. I gave up my studies, my career, and everything I had for love, only to be dumped four times in a row. They thought I'd never recover, let alone stand beside them again. Instead, I built my own football team from the ground up, led it to the top, and stood across the pitch from the men who once broke my heart. This time, they weren't fighting for a championship. They were desperately fighting to win me back.

Love Offside: Four Top Champions Crave My Return Chapter 1 She Couldn't Keep Living Like This

In the months before I turned twenty-eight, my life unraveled completely.

I was still struggling to cope with the collapse of my fourth serious relationship. Eventually, I was forced to face an uncomfortable truth-I had centered my entire existence around romance.

For years, I had convinced myself that finding "the one" would solve everything, that true love alone could make a life meaningful and whole.

Yet deep down, I avoided confronting a painful reality-if love disappeared from my life, who would I be without it?

There was a time when I genuinely believed Brody Marshall and I would spend the rest of our lives together.

When we first crossed paths, neither of us had our lives together. We were emotionally drained, wounded by the past, and unsure of where we were headed.

Our relationship began across the distance, cautiously and uncertainly. Over time, we became each other's support system, helping one another recover from the chaos we'd been living through, until friendship turned into love.

I believed that surviving those hardships together guaranteed us a future. It didn't.

Just two months after our breakup, I barely recognized myself anymore.

I turned to food for comfort, eating compulsively while avoiding the outside world entirely. Even the thought of seeing another person felt unbearable.

Adding to it all, reporters constantly lingered outside my building, waiting with cameras in hand, eager to capture my downfall.

It was, without question, the darkest chapter I had ever lived through.

Within eight weeks, I had put on nearly fifty pounds. My body no longer felt like my own, and I hid the extra weight beneath loose jeans and oversized T-shirts.

Night after night, alone in my apartment, I wrestled with the same bitter thought: how could I devote so much energy to helping the men I loved thrive, yet fail so completely at managing my own life?

The nonstop attention from the media only made everything worse.

The Sun ran the bold headline. "The Stars' Ex-Irene Warren Single Again!"

The Sunday Times tried to uncover more details about our breakup but got nowhere. Whenever reporters asked Brody about me, he refused to discuss our past relationship.

At the same time, News of the World dissected our history piece by piece, turning our failed relationship into entertainment for their readers.

Rumors spread endlessly, and I felt increasingly trapped inside my small Manchester flat, as though the world outside had become hostile territory.

That was Irene Warren's account-set down in the pages of her memoir.

One afternoon at three o'clock, sunlight filtered through the blinds, casting thin bands of light across the room.

From behind the window, a pair of brown eyes watched the street in silence. Those eyes belonged to Irene.

Weight gain had changed her appearance, and the lively spark that once defined her had faded, replaced by weariness and lingering anxiety.

She adjusted the blinds with a quick motion, blinking as a narrow beam of sunlight briefly crossed her face. Her gaze remained fixed outside while a familiar knot of tension formed in her chest.

The man standing near the tree caught her attention. He had been holding the same Starbucks cup for nearly an hour, yet his attention never strayed from the building.

And the man lingering by the fried chicken stall... his frame, his features... he looked suspiciously similar to a reporter she had seen from News of the World.

Then there were the three unfamiliar cars parked nearby. Their license plates weren't local, and she was certain they didn't belong in the area.

Within moments, Irene had mentally noted every detail that seemed out of place. She had no doubt the paparazzi were still lurking nearby, patiently waiting for an opportunity to photograph her at her lowest.

The anxiety gnawing at her only intensified. Pulling herself away from the window, her attention drifted to the pile of newspapers resting on the arm of the sofa. She had collected them from the mailbox several nights earlier, under the cover of darkness. Though she had already pored over them countless times, she found herself unable to stop revisiting the articles.

Brody's image appeared on nearly every page she turned. The tall Englishman who had lived beside her only two months ago still appeared polished, confident, and effortlessly attractive.

The woman standing next to him, however, was someone else entirely.

A prominent photograph of Brody dominated the front page of the sports section.

Even though he wore sunglasses in the photo, she could vividly remember his striking pale-blue eyes. There had been a warmth in his gaze that made people relax instantly, smiling before they even realized it.

Once, photographers had eagerly captured images of the two of them hand in hand, portraying them as the ideal couple.

Now, the women appearing beside him were glamorous celebrities-a rebellious rock singer, a dazzling pageant queen, and an up-and-coming supermodel.

They were the sort of women who effortlessly became the center of attention wherever they went.

Irene's hands shook as she turned the pages, frustration and bitterness churning inside her.

Inevitably, she measured herself against them, and the harsh voice in her head became impossible to ignore. "Just look at yourself. Overweight and out of shape. Ordinary and forgettable. How could you ever compare to them?"

Her eyes drifted toward the mirror hanging nearby, but one brief glance was enough. She immediately looked away, revulsion twisting painfully inside her chest.

Her grip tightened around the newspaper until the pages crumpled beneath her fingers. Drawing her knees closer, she sank deeper into the corner of the sofa as an emptiness settled over her.

"This has to end," she murmured to herself.

She couldn't keep living like this. Something had to change. Once and for all.
