I was in the delivery room, fighting for my life against a sudden amniotic fluid embolism. The doctor rushed out, desperately asking my family to sign the consent form to save me and my babies. But my fiancé, Jagger, slammed the clipboard shut and refused to sign. Through the half-open door, I saw my cousin Caroline resting a hand on her flat stomach, smiling triumphantly as she leaned into his arms. "What Jagger really wants is a healthy heir to secure his position, not whatever that thing is inside you." They walked away, leaving me to die on the operating table. If a passing stranger hadn't stepped in to sign the papers, my twins and I would have been corpses. When I woke up, Jagger had already announced my death in a "yachting accident" to the world. He had transferred all my company shares to his name and even left instructions for the hospital to get rid of us if we survived. I couldn't believe the man who promised to love me forever could casually sentence me and his own children to death just for corporate greed. My despair turned into an icy, dead calm. I threw away my engagement ring and fled to Europe with my babies in the dead of night. Five years later, I stepped off a private jet in New York, holding the hands of my genius twins. It was time to take back my empire and make them pay.

Rising From Ashes: The Vengeful Heiress Returns Chapter 1

The red light above the operating room door was a cruel, glaring eye.

Jagger Patel tore at the knot of his silk tie. The fabric choked him.

"Jagger, don't worry."

His cousin, Caroline Donaldson, placed a gentle hand on his arm. Her touch was as soft as her voice, full of practiced concern. "Helena will be fine. She's always been strong."

He shook her off. The movement was sharp, violent.

"I'm not worried about her!" he snarled, his voice a low growl that echoed in the sterile hallway of New York-Presbyterian. "I'm worried about the company! If something happens to her, the old guard at Aether will tear it to pieces!"

This marriage wasn't about love. It was a merger, a consolidation of power. Helena was the key to unlocking the Donaldson family's legacy, Aether.

A nurse burst through the double doors, her face pale with panic.

"Mr. Patel, Ms. Donaldson has had a sudden amniotic embolism. We need to operate immediately. The mother and the babies are in extreme danger! Please, you need to sign the consent forms now!"

A flicker of something sharp and ugly-excitement-flashed in Caroline's eyes before she masked it with a gasp.

She rushed forward, her voice trembling. "Nurse, is it that serious? My poor cousin..."

Jagger took the clipboard and pen from the nurse's trembling hand. His fingertips hovered over the signature line, his gaze as cold and hard as steel.

He didn't look at the nurse. He looked at Caroline.

A cruel smile twisted his handsome features. "Caroline, do you think I should sign?"

She feigned shock, her hand flying to her mouth. "Jagger, what are you saying? That's your fiancée and your... child."

She paused, just for a second, on the word "child."

Jagger let out a cold laugh. He snapped the clipboard shut.

Crack.

The sound made the nurse flinch. He shoved it back at her.

"I'm not so sure that child is mine," he said, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper meant only for Caroline. "I'm not signing."

"Our plan," he murmured, ignoring the nurse's horrified stare, "it's time."

Together, they pushed open the door to the delivery room.

The scent of antiseptic and fear hit them. Helena lay on the bed, her skin slick with sweat, her hair plastered to her forehead. She saw Jagger, and a flicker of hope ignited in her exhausted eyes.

"Jagger... help me... help our baby..." Her voice was a thread of sound, barely audible.

He walked to her bedside, looking down at her as if from a great height. His voice was a gentle caress, laced with poison.

"My dear, our engagement is over. As for Aether, Caroline and I will take good 'care' of it for you."

Caroline stepped forward, placing a hand on her own flat stomach. Her smile was a venomous bloom.

"Did you know, sister?" she cooed. "What Jagger really wants is a healthy heir who can secure his position. Not some bastard of unknown origin in your belly."

Helena's pupils contracted. A strangled gasp escaped her lips. She tried to sit up, but a wave of agony ripped through her, stealing her breath.

Despair, cold and black, washed over her.

A doctor rushed in, his face a mask of fury. "What are you two doing! The patient is critical! If the family doesn't sign, we'll have to give up!"

Jagger and Caroline exchanged a triumphant look. They turned and walked away, leaving Helena's pleas and the doctor's shouts behind them.

Her vision blurred. The edges of the room swam. She was dying.

With the last of her strength, she looked toward the half-open door. A tall, imposing figure stood in the hallway, a silhouette against the harsh light.

"Help... me..."

The whisper was lost in the chaos, a dying breath. She reached a hand toward that blurry shadow of hope.

The figure stopped.

Euan Stafford had just finished a meeting with the hospital administrator. He heard the faint cry, a sound of pure desperation that cut through the noise. His brow furrowed.

His gaze, sharp as a hawk's, sliced through the gap in the door. He took in the scene in an instant: a dying woman on a bed, helpless doctors, and an air of utter abandonment.

Without a moment's hesitation, he strode forward and pushed the door wide open.

His presence filled the room. The chaotic energy vanished, replaced by a sudden, tense silence. His authority was a physical force.

The doctor looked at him, a drowning man spotting a lifeline. "Sir, are you...?"

Euan didn't answer. He walked to the bed and looked down at Helena. Her eyes, wide with a mixture of terror and pleading, locked onto his. They burned themselves into his memory.

He turned to the doctor, his voice low and commanding, leaving no room for argument.

"What surgery does she need? Get the papers. I'll sign."

The doctor stared, dumbfounded. "But sir, you're not family..."

Euan's eyes turned to ice. "I am now. Save her. I'll take full responsibility for the consequences."

He took the pen. On one form after another, he signed his name.

Euan Stafford.

Before the darkness consumed her completely, Helena saw the clean, sharp line of his jaw and the powerful script of his signature.

The nurses sprang into action, wheeling her toward the operating room. The hallway was empty again, except for Euan. He stood alone, the feeling of the pen still a strange pressure on his fingertips.
