In a world where elite martial artists can split mountains and soar through the clouds, mortals are nothing more than insects to be crushed underfoot. Damian was just a village fisherman, content with his quiet life.Until arrogant cultivators descended from the sky, burned his home to ashes, and dragged his mother and sister away in chains. To get them back, Damian needs power. But traditional cultivation requires decades of silent meditation, aristocratic bloodlines, and hoarded resources. Damian has none of these. What he does have is a lethal, impossible secret. Left for dead after a brutal battle with a mutated river beast, Damian discovers his body can directly absorb and purify the chaotic energy of Beast Cores,an act that would instantly explode the veins of a normal man. Trading the slow path of meditation for the bloody path of the hunt, Damian turns his sights on the deepest, most dangerous forests of the mortal realm. He will hunt the deadliest monsters in the world. He will devour their strength. And as he violently shatters the boundaries of the Seven Qi Realms, he will march on the pristine mountain sects to prove one simple truth: Even gods can bleed.
The surface of the lake was like glass, reflecting the pale afternoon sky, until the water violently exploded.
Damian didn't have time to think. Instinct, hammered into him by nineteen years of harsh frontier living, took over. He threw himself backward into the mud just as a massive set of jaws snapped shut exactly where his head had been a second before.
It was an Iron-Scaled River Hound. It dragged itself onto the muddy bank, a nightmare of muscle and jagged armor, water pouring off its metallic scales. Its eyes burned with a mindless, chaotic hunger. This wasn't a normal predator; it was a beast mutated by the world's ambient Qi.
Damian scrambled to his feet, his grip tightening around the worn wooden shaft of his fishing spear. His hands were shaking, but his stance was wide. He couldn't outrun it. The village was three miles away. If he turned his back, he was dead.
With a guttural roar, the beast lunged.
The fight was a blur of mud, blood, and desperate evasion. Damian wasn't a cultivator; he had no martial arts techniques, no Qi armor to protect him. Every time the beast's claws grazed him, it felt like being struck by a carriage. His lungs burned. His vision blurred.
"Just one opening,"Damian thought, tasting copper in his mouth. "Just one."
The hound reared back for a final, crushing bite. Damian didn't dodge. Instead, he planted the butt of his spear deep into the mud, angled the iron tip upward, and braced his entire body.
The beast's momentum became its own executioner. The heavy iron spearhead pierced the softer flesh beneath its jaw, driving deep into its skull with a sickening crunch. The shaft splintered instantly, but it was enough. The beast collapsed, lifeless, pinning Damian beneath its crushing weight.
Pain flared like wildfire. Three of Damian's ribs were shattered. One of the beast's razor-sharp claws was lodged deeply in his side, severing an artery. The world began to grow cold and dim.
"I can't die here,"he thought, his vision tunneling into a pinpoint of grey. "Mom... Maya... I promised I'd bring back dinner."
He fought to keep his eyes open, clawing weakly at the mud. Then, he felt it.
A strange, rhythmic pulsing. It wasn't his failing heart. It was coming from the corpse of the beast. Deep within the hound's ruined skull, a faint crimson light began to glow.
Damian couldn't explain it, but the light felt warm. It felt like a lifeline. With the absolute last shred of his strength, he reached a trembling hand toward the light.
As his bloodstained fingers grazed the air, the beast's skull cracked open. A smooth, crimson orb,no larger than a peach levitated upward. It hummed with wild, chaotic energy. Slowly, almost as if it had a will of its own, the core floated down and settled directly over Damian's chest.
It flared with a blinding light and sank straight through his skin.
Fire. That was the only word for it. A torrent of violent, burning energy exploded outward from his heart, flooding his dying veins. He threw his head back to scream, but the world went entirely black.
When Damian opened his eyes, the moon was high in the sky.
He shot up with a gasp, his hands frantically gripping his ribs. There was no pain. He looked down. His clothes were shredded and stained dark with dried blood, but the fatal wound in his side was completely sealed. Not even a scar remained.
As he pushed himself off the ground, he misjudged his own strength and practically launched himself backward, tumbling into a thicket of reeds.
He froze, staring at his hands. He could hear the faint scuttling of insects fifty yards away. He could see the individual veins on the leaves in the dark. He felt a thrumming, condensed ball of pure warmth resting in his chest.A purified version of the beast's violent Qi.
He didn't know how, but he had survived.
"The village," Damian gasped, the sudden realization hitting him like a physical blow. The hound had been heading downstream. Heading toward his home.
He took off sprinting. Every step chewed up the distance with terrifying speed, his new muscles propelling him forward faster than a galloping horse.
But as he broke through the tree line, the smell of woodsmoke hit him.
The village wasn't just ruined; it was decimated. Yet, there were no beast tracks. The destruction was horrifyingly precise. Houses hadn't been smashed; they had been sliced cleanly in half by unnatural forces. Craters scorched the earth where deep, blue fires still flickered.
"Mom! Maya!" Damian screamed, tearing through the debris of the town square.
"Damian..."
A weak, rasping voice came from beneath the collapsed roof of the tavern. Damian hurled a wooden beam aside with one hand, a beam that would have taken three strong men to lift yesterday and found Elder Thorne.
The old man's lower half was crushed, his breathing shallow.
"Elder! What happened? Where are they? Was it a beast herd?" Damian asked frantically, kneeling in the ashes.
Elder Thorne coughed, blood bubbling at his lips. His trembling hand reached up, gripping Damian's wrist with surprising strength.
"Not... beasts," the old man wheezed, his eyes wide with lingering terror. "The sky... they came from the sky. Men standing on flying swords. Clothed in white silk."
Damian felt the blood run cold in his veins. Cultivators. The immortals who looked down on mortals as nothing more than insects.
"They took them," Thorne whispered, his voice fading. "Your mother... your sister... they chained them in light. Flew toward the Eastern Peaks. Damian... do not follow. You are just a boy. They are... gods..."
The elder's hand went limp. His eyes glossed over, staring unblinkingly at the starry sky.
Damian stood slowly in the silent, burning ruins of his home. He looked down at his trembling hands, feeling the thrumming, stolen power of the beast core radiating in his chest. He looked toward the Eastern Peaks, his sorrow hardening into something jagged, cold, and entirely unbreakable.
They thought they were gods. Damian was going to prove that gods could bleed.
