Maria Clara-a young teacher, a young woman considering a life of religious devotion, and an orphan raised among the sisters-was sent by the Mother Superior to work as a nanny and governess for Count Álvaro Alencastro, a stern and cold widower. The death of his wife, shrouded in mystery, led Álvaro to neglect his young children. Lonely and unruly, the children have successfully driven away several nannies before Maria Clara's arrival. Upon reaching the manor, Maria Clara encountered a house filled with shadows, mystery, rigid rules, and children yearning for affection and attention. With her warmth and sensitivity, she gradually won over each of them, instilling warmth and unity in a household previously dominated by coldness and isolation. Unexpectedly, she also stirred emotions in the count himself-feelings he had never known. As Maria Clara transformed the lives of the Alencastro family, puzzles surrounding the countess's death began to emerge...

The Aloof Count's Novice Governess Chapter 1

Music filled the ancient corridors of St. Barbara's Institute before the sun had even touched its tall windows. It was always this way. Before the sisters had even finished their pre-dawn prayers, Maria Clara would be seated at the old chapel piano, its first chords waking the day.

The melody was gentle, almost a prayer in itself. Her clear, soft voice echoed with an almost otherworldly quality.

The sound drew the sisters in as they crossed the cloister for their morning prayers.

"Our girl sings like an angel," Sister Rosalia murmured. "God put music in that child. I feel such peace when she sings."

Maria Clara had grown up within those stone walls.

Orphaned as a baby, she never knew who her parents were. But she knew she had been loved by these women, who devoted their lives to caring for others.

Even now, at twenty-five, she was a trained teacher, responsible for the lessons of the young boarders and for the orphanage the nuns ran. Yet she still felt part of that great, silent family, governed by prayer, discipline, and affection.

When the last note dissolved into the air, Maria Clara closed the piano and took a deep breath. A new day was beginning. She stood to prepare the girls' activities, but before she could leave the chapel, she heard hurried footsteps.

It was the Mother Superior, holding a sealed letter that bore a golden coat of arms.

"My child," said Mother Constance. "We need to talk."

"Of course, Mother. Has something happened?"

The Mother Superior took a deep breath, studying her for a moment.

"I've received a request... a very special one. And I believe God has chosen you for this mission."

She held out the letter. The seal was imposing, ancient, heavy with history. An "A" entwined with acanthus leaves. The crest of the Alencastro family.

Maria Clara frowned.

"The Alencastros... the noble house from Serra das Hortênsias?"

The Mother Superior nodded.

"Count Alvaro Alencastro lost his wife two years ago. Since then, he has withdrawn from everything: from society, from God... and, unfortunately, from his own children. The housekeeper wrote to us, describing the situation. The children are undisciplined and emotionally unstable. They've already driven away several governesses. He needs someone competent... But also someone with light, patience, and faith."

Maria Clara shrank slightly.

"Mother... I'm not a nanny. Perhaps they need a..."

"They want more than a nanny. An educated, refined teacher for the children's early schooling at home. The Alencastro family has deep roots in this region and prefers to maintain its discretion." The Mother Superior smiled. "Besides, the count has been a great help to our orphanage."

A tremor ran through Maria Clara's hands.

"I... I don't know if I'm capable."

"God knows." The Mother Superior touched her shoulder. "And so do I."

"And what of the vows I hope to take?" Maria Clara had always wanted to become a nun. She loved God and the life of the convent.

Silence.

Outside, the bell for the first morning prayer rang. Maria Clara looked at the coat of arms once more and felt something stir inside her: fear, curiosity, and perhaps, a calling.

"My dear, carry out this mission, and we will see what comes after."

The Mother Superior's gaze was that of a mother looking at her daughter, and it seemed to say, "I know what I am doing."

"When must I go?" she asked at last.

"Today," the Mother Superior answered. "The car will arrive at noon."

Maria Clara's heart raced.

"It's all... so fast."

"Prepare yourself, my child." The Mother Superior took her hands. "I am certain God has something in store for you in that house."

Although Maria Clara lived with the nuns, the Mother Superior had never allowed her to progress beyond the novitiate. She believed Maria Clara's true calling lay not in holy vows, but somewhere beyond the convent's high walls.

Upon completing her studies, she had earned a scholarship to study languages and music abroad. She'd made friends, even had a brief, innocent romance. But a deep longing for the only home she'd ever known brought her back. She returned to the convent to teach at its boarding school for girls from wealthy families, as well as at the very orphanage where she herself had been raised.

Maria Clara was well-educated, refined, and pure of heart. Her face was angelic, with a perpetually calm expression, large emerald-green eyes, and rosy skin as soft as a peach. Long, wavy, light-brown hair framed her features.

Though she dressed modestly for a woman her age, she was tall, with a slim, elegant figure.

The rest of the morning passed in a blur of warm farewells. The girls protested the loss of their favorite teacher while the sisters pressed small gifts into her hands.

At noon, when the convent gate opened to reveal a gleaming black car sent by the count, Maria Clara felt the weight of the unknown.

"God bless you, my child," the Mother Superior said, holding her face in her hands.

Maria Clara smiled, even as her eyes filled with tears.

The driver, a man no older than forty, approached politely. He took the single suitcase she carried and placed it in the trunk.

She took a deep breath as she slid into the car, the engine purring to life.

The road that led to the Serra das Hortênsias wound through open fields, woods, and small farmsteads. Maria Clara watched in silence as the landscape grew dense and cool, the air taking on a chill typical of southern Brazil.

When they passed through an ornate iron gate flanked by old columns, she held her breath. The driver, who had not spoken a single word the entire journey, merely murmured, "Welcome to the Alencastro estate, miss."

The drive was lined with blue and lilac hydrangeas, and a vast, rolling lawn created a breathtaking, almost melancholy vista.

And then, after a gentle curve, the manor appeared. Imposing. Silent.

The Alencastro manor was a century-old structure, a blend of European architecture and Portuguese colonial design. It was beautiful, but something about it sent a shiver down her spine.

A family banner fluttered from the top of the facade, displaying the crest the Alencastros had borne since the days of the Brazilian Empire. After all, while the title of Count carried no legal standing in the republic, the tradition remained alive in the name and the bloodline.

When she stepped out of the car, the driver gave a slight nod, set her suitcase by the entrance, and retreated as silently and discreetly as he had arrived.

Maria Clara stood frozen before the imposing manor, a chill running through her. It felt as though the moment she stepped through those doors, something would change forever. She would never be the same.
