She was rejected in front of the entire pack. She never expected to become their Queen. Elena Vale spent eighteen years believing she was nothing - a powerless Omega no one wanted. Then her fated mate, Alpha Adrian Blackthorne, rejected her in front of his entire pack the moment their eyes met. What she didn't know: he did it to save her life. Behind Elena's "ordinary" bloodline hides a secret two kingdoms have hunted for eighteen years - a lost crown, a mother who faked her own death, and a power that marks Elena as the last heir of a bloodline everyone believed extinct. Now the Alpha who broke her heart is the only one who can keep her alive. The Council that raised her wants her dead. And the boy who erased her memories to protect her might be the one person she can't survive without. Fate rejected her once. It won't get the chance again.
The night I met my mate was supposed to be the beginning of my happiness. Instead, it became the night I learned exactly how cruel fate could be.
The full moon hung low over the Silverpine ceremonial grounds, spilling silver light across the ancient oaks and the hundreds of wolves gathered beneath them. The air smelled of crushed pine needles and woodsmoke, of nervous sweat and the faint metallic tang that always seemed to hang over a Moon Bond Ceremony, as if the whole pack could smell the possibility of change before it happened. Somewhere under all that light stood me - Elena Vale, eighteen years old, an Omega, and, by the pack's quiet consensus, entirely unremarkable.
I had spent my whole life trying to prove them wrong. Tonight, I thought, might finally be my chance.
My wolf had been pacing since sunset, restless in a way I'd never felt before. She circled the inside of my ribs like something caged that had just scented the door standing open. *Something is coming*, she kept saying, and I kept telling her to be quiet, because if I let myself hope and hope turned out to be wrong, I didn't think I'd survive it a second time.
"You look terrified," Lila whispered beside me.
"I'm not."
"You are. Your hands are shaking."
I forced my fingers still, pressing them flat against the fabric of my borrowed dress. "I've waited eighteen years for this. I'm allowed to be nervous."
She squeezed my hand. "Whatever happens, I'm right here."
I wanted to believe her. I didn't yet know what that promise would cost her.
The drums stopped. Silence dropped over the clearing like a held breath, and every head turned toward the stone staircase at the edge of the grounds, where torchlight climbed the old stone in flickering ribbons.
He appeared at the top in black beneath his ceremonial cloak - Alpha Adrian Blackthorne, the most feared Alpha in the Northern Territories, young enough that half the pack still whispered about how he'd taken the title so early, powerful enough that the whispering had stopped mattering years ago. His dark hair moved in the cold wind. His eyes swept the crowd like something searching for a weak point, the way a predator studies a herd before choosing which animal has already given up.
Then his eyes found mine, and stopped.
*Mate.*
The word detonated inside my skull, and for one perfect second my whole body forgot how to be afraid. I had dreamed about Adrian Blackthorne since I was old enough to know what dreaming meant - quiet, guilty dreams I never told anyone about, because wanting the Alpha King felt like wanting the moon itself. I had never let myself believe fate would actually hand him to me.
He came down the steps - one, two, three - each one landing inside my chest like a heartbeat that wasn't mine. The crowd parted for him the way water parts for something heavier than itself. He stopped in front of me, close enough that I could feel the heat coming off him, and for a moment neither of us moved. I watched surprise cross his face, and then something warmer, something that made the backs of my knees go weak.
"Elena." The way he said my name made the whole world fall away - the drums, the fire, the hundred watching faces, all of it gone.
"Alpha."
His hand lifted toward mine. I remember thinking, in that half-second, that I would remember the exact shape of his fingers for the rest of my life.
Then his hand stopped, and everything about him went cold at once - his face, his eyes, the warmth that had been there half a breath earlier, gone like a door slammed somewhere behind his ribs. My wolf whimpered before I understood why.
He stepped back.
"I, Adrian Blackthorne, reject Elena Vale as my mate."
The bond didn't break quietly. It tore. Heat ripped through my chest like something had reached inside my ribs and pulled, and for one blinding second I couldn't hear the pack's gasps over the sound of my own pulse breaking rhythm. My knees buckled; Lila's hand was the only thing that kept me upright. I looked down at my wrist, where the faint silver mark of the bond had begun forming the moment his eyes found mine. It was already fading, curling back on itself like morning frost giving up to the sun - like it had never been real at all. My skin ached where it disappeared, a phantom burn with no visible wound.
*"The Alpha rejected her." "An Omega. How embarrassing."* The whispers came from every direction, and none of them hurt as much as Adrian's silence.
I lifted my chin, because if I was going to break, I refused to do it where they could watch.
"I accept your rejection."
The words cost me more than anything I'd ever said, more than the burn still spreading under my collarbone. Adrian's jaw tightened - for one heartbeat I thought I saw regret, something raw flickering behind the composure - then he turned and walked away, and I understood that whatever I'd seen in his eyes a moment ago hadn't been enough to save me.
That was when I noticed her. Seraphina, the Beta's daughter, stood near Adrian's family with a small silver necklace at her throat, half-hidden beneath the collar of her gown. I knew that necklace. I had seen it once before, the night my mother died, twelve years ago, when I was six and too young to understand what I was looking at - only old enough to remember the shape of it catching firelight the way it was catching torchlight now.
My mother had died. That was the only thing I had ever been told.
Seraphina caught me staring and her smile vanished, her hand rising to cover the pendant like she'd been caught holding something stolen.
"Elena, we have to go," Lila said, pulling at my arm.
"I need air."
I ran before she could stop me, skirts tangling around my legs, into the trees, until the ceremony's noise disappeared behind me and my tears finally came. I pressed a hand to my chest, to the place where the bond had torn loose, and it ached - not because he'd rejected me, but because some part of me knew, with total certainty, that he hadn't wanted to.
"Why?" I asked my wolf, my voice cracking against the dark.
*He was afraid*, she said, and would say nothing more, curling in on herself like she regretted admitting even that much.
A branch snapped behind me. I spun - nothing, just shadow and the shapes of trees. Then the smell of blood reached me, faint and old, and a man stepped out from between the trunks, his face hidden beneath a dark hood.
"Elena Vale. You shouldn't have come here tonight."
"Who are you? What do you want?"
He didn't attack. He reached into his cloak and threw something to the ground at my feet - a small silver pendant, tarnished with age, the chain broken as though it had been torn from someone's neck in a hurry. My mother's pendant. I would have known it anywhere, even after twelve years, even in the dark.
"Where did you get this?"
"Ask yourself why your mother lied about her death," he said, quieter now, almost gentle. "Ask yourself why the Alpha rejected you."
"You know Adrian?"
"He knows exactly who you are."
He was gone before I could ask anything else, swallowed by the dark as if he'd never existed at all - no footsteps, no rustle of leaves, nothing but the pendant lying in the dirt to prove he'd been real. I picked it up with shaking hands. On its back was a symbol I'd never seen - a crescent moon circled by three stars - and the instant my fingers closed around it, heat rushed up my arm and my wolf went utterly, unnervingly silent.
Then, from inside that silence: *Run.*
A howl split the night. Not a pack howl. A warning. Another answered it, then another, until the forest seemed to be baying at once, the sound crawling up my spine like something with claws.
*Rogues.*
I ran, branches tearing at my arms, until something fast - too fast - closed the distance behind me and I went down hard, palms scraping against roots and stone. Before I could stand, a shape stepped between the trees, eyes glowing gold in the dark.
Adrian.
"Stay away from me," I said, scrambling back.
"You're in danger."
"You rejected me in front of the entire pack."
"I know. I didn't have a choice. Someone threatened your life."
I wanted to call him a liar. I might have, if his hand hadn't been shaking - the great Alpha King, afraid, and not for himself.
Then his eyes found the pendant in my hand, and every trace of color left his face.
"Where did you get that?"
"Someone gave it to me."
"Elena," he whispered, "if that symbol has returned, then everything you've been told about your family is a lie."
A voice slid out of the dark before I could answer.
"Too late, Alpha."
Seraphina stood on the ridge above us, my mother's necklace glinting at her throat, and she wasn't smiling anymore.
"Your mother should have killed you when she had the chance."
The pendant in my hand began to glow, warm and then hot against my palm, and somewhere deep inside me, a second wolf - one I had never known existed - opened its eyes.
The night my life had ended, I realized, might only be the night it had actually begun.
