He was the fire that could warm her empire, or burn it to the ground. Scarla Vence doesn't have time for distractions. As a top-tier crisis manager, her sole focus is saving her family's legacy by securing the VIP launch of Eden, a billion-dollar luxury resort. The only problem is the owner. Kennedy Johnson is devastatingly handsome, ruthlessly arrogant, and entirely too used to getting what he wants. He thinks Scarla is just another uptight employee and she thinks he's a cocky billionaire who needs to be taken down a peg. Their clashes are explosive, their banter is lethal, and the tension between them is a ticking time bomb. But when a catastrophic storm traps them alone on the island, and a deadly sabotage cuts them off from the world, the games stop. Stripped of their wealth and defenses, the hatred between them ignites into a consuming, undeniable passion. Now, Scarla must survive the storm, outsmart a ruthless enemy, and resist the one man who threatens to burn down all her carefully laid walls. Some desires burn, others consume.

The Enemy Who Ignited My Desire Chapter 1 The Collapse

The man who wanted her dead was standing in her bedroom doorway, smiling. Scarla Vence had never seen him before, but she knew exactly who he was. She'd seen his photograph in the financial documents, buried deep in the due diligence reports she'd reviewed before accepting this contract. Cipher James, a disgraced former executive who is estranged from the Johnson family. And now he was here, in her villa, in her bedroom, with a knife in his hand.

"Don't scream," he said softly. "I've already killed the night guard. I'd hate to add you to the list."

She didn't scream. Vences didn't scream. Vences bent, they survived, they lied but they didn't scream. She reached for her phone. He was faster. He crossed the room in three quick strides, snatched it from her hand, and crushed it under his heel.

"Your father's secret," he said, his voice conversational. "The foundation, the cover-up, I know everything, Scarla. I know you know and I know you've been lying to Kennedy Johnson for three days."

She stared at him, her blood running cold. "What do you want?"

"To watch you suffer." His smile was chilling. "To watch everything you love burn. Starting with this villa and the man who's been lying to you just as much as you've been lying to him."

Before she could respond, he was gone. Disappearing into the darkness like he'd never been there at all. She lay frozen in her bed, her heart hammering, her mind racing. She should move, call for help or do something but the weight of everything she'd been hiding for years pressed down on her like a physical force.

The Vences don't break, her father had said. We bend, we survive. She'd survived so long that she'd forgotten how to live.

---

The first crack came an hour later. She was still lying in bed, still frozen, still trying to process what had just happened. Then she heard a groan that traveled through the marble floors and up the imported Italian walls, vibrating straight into her bones.

She was moving before her brain caught up, rolling off the bed and hitting the cold stone floor just as the four-hundred-thread-count sheets and the ten-thousand-euro-a-night ocean view plunged into the churning sea below. But she didn't run. Because at that moment, she finally understood that Cipher had been in her room. He'd warned her, he'd told her what was coming and she hadn't done a thing to stop him.

---

The floor collapsed beneath her. She fell through darkness, through shattered glass and twisted rebar, through everything she'd built and everything she'd destroyed. She landed hard on something that might have been concrete, might have been the bones of the ancient island itself.

Pain exploded through her body. She tasted blood and for a moment, she couldn't move, couldn't breathe nor think. Then a hand grabbed her wrist, hauling her to her feet.

"Up. Get up. Now." She looked up into Kennedy Johnson's face and felt her heart stop. He was bleeding from a gash on his forehead, blood streaming down his face and soaking into his white shirt. His eyes were wild, and there was something in them she'd never seen before.

She saw terror but also fury. Fury directed at her.

"You knew," he said. "You knew he was here. You knew he was going to do this."

"Kennedy-"

"I saw him leave your room. I saw everything." His grip on her wrist tightened until it hurt. "You've been lying to me from the beginning. About the foundation, about your father, about everything."

She opened her mouth to deny it, to make up an excuse, to bend, to survive, to lie but this time she couldn't do it.

"Yes," she whispered. "I knew. I knew he was here. I knew what he was planning. And I didn't do anything to stop him."

His eyes blazed with something she couldn't name. "Why?"

"Because I was afraid." Her voice cracked. "Because I've spent my whole life being afraid. Afraid of failing, afraid of losing everything, afraid that if anyone saw the cracks, they'd walk away."

He stared at her. For a moment, she thought he'd walk away right then. Leave her to die in the wreckage she'd helped create but instead, he pulled her into the corridor, his body shielding hers from the debris raining down around them.

"Move," he said. "Now."

---

The panic room was small and cold and smelled like concrete. He released her wrist and moved to the far wall, checking the locks. His movements were precise and mechanical, but she could see the tension in his shoulders, the way his hands trembled. He didn't look at her. He couldn't bear to do that.

"Tell me everything," he said. "The truth and that alone."

"My father designed the foundation." The words came out flat and hollow. "He knew it was flawed but he covered it up. I've known this for years."

"How long?"

"Since I was twenty. I found the original engineering reports in his office. I confronted him but he begged me to stay quiet." She laughed, the sound bitter and broken. "I was so desperate to save the firm and prove I was worthy of the legacy. I told myself I was protecting my family. But I was just protecting myself."

"And Cipher?"

"He found out somehow. He must have been tracking the reports." She shook her head. "I don't know how he knew. But he's been using it against me. He showed up in my room tonight. He told me he was going to destroy everything."

"Everything?"

"The villa." She met his eyes. "You, me and everything you've built."

He was silent for a long moment. Then he moved to the table, lighting a small emergency candle.

"You should have told me," he said quietly.

"I know."

"I would have helped you. I would have protected you."

"I know that now." Tears streamed down her face. "But I didn't know it then. I was so used to carrying the weight alone."

He crossed to her, his hands cupping her cheeks. His thumbs brushed away her tears. "You're not alone anymore, Scarla. Do you understand me? You're not carrying this by yourself."

She stared at him. "How can you still want to help me? After everything I've done?"

"Because I've done worse." His voice was barely a whisper. "I've lied, I've hidden things, I've let people down and I know what it's like to be so consumed by fear that you can't see the way out."

"What do we do now?"

"First, we survive." His grip on her face tightened. "Then we stop him. Together."

---

The lights flickered and died. Absolute darkness creeped in. She could hear his breathing, steady and controlled, and her own heart hammering in her ears. She reached for his hand. He gripped hers back. Then she heard footsteps. Slow and deliberate, echoing through the corridor outside the panic room.

She squeezed his hand. "Kennedy-"

"I know."

The footsteps stopped directly outside the door. Then a voice, smooth and amused and utterly confident, filtered through the steel.

"Hello, brother. I know you're in there." Cipher smirked. "Don't worry. I'm not here to kill you. Not yet because that would be too easy." He paused. "But I wanted to tell you the truth. The real truth about who Scarla really is."

Ice flooded her veins. "Your father didn't just cover up the foundation flaw," Cipher continued. "He built the flaw. He knew what it would do and he did it deliberately, to destroy your resort. Because you rejected his business proposal years ago."

Scarla's blood ran cold. That wasn't true. It couldn't be true. "He had the evidence destroyed, bribed the inspectors and threatened the workers." Cipher's voice was soft, almost gentle. "And when Scarla found out, she didn't tell you instead she covered it up. Just like her father taught her."

She opened her mouth to deny it and defend herself but the words wouldn't come because she couldn't prove it wasn't true. Couldn't prove her father hadn't done it.

"Think about that," Cipher said. "While you're waiting to die." The footsteps retreated giving way for silence.

---

She turned to Kennedy, desperate. "It's not true. I swear to you, it's not true."

"Scarla-"

"My father did a lot of things. But he didn't build the flaw to destroy you. He covered it up, yes. He was wrong to do it. But he didn't do it deliberately."

"How do you know?"

"Because I know him. I know he was weak and scared and desperate to save the firm. But he wasn't a murderer." She grabbed Kennedy's arm. "Please. You have to believe me."

He was silent for a long moment. Then he pulled her into his arms. "I believe you."

She sobbed against his chest. "How can you? How can you be so sure?"

"Because I've seen him. His work and his designs." Kennedy's voice was soft. "He was sloppy, desperate but he wasn't evil. That was Cipher's specialty."

She pulled back, staring at him. "What do you mean?"

"Cipher was the original architect on the project. He designed the foundation. He knew it was flawed but he designed it that way. Your father covered it up, but Cipher built the trap." Kennedy's eyes blazed with fury. "He's been planning this for years."

"How do you know?"

"Because he told me." Kennedy's jaw tightened. "Years ago before everything fell apart. He bragged about it and boasted that he'd destroy everything I ever built." He met her eyes. "I didn't believe him then but I do now."

She stared at him. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't want you to worry." He brushed a strand of hair from her face. "And because I was testing you. To see if you'd tell me the truth."

"And now?"

"Now I know that the truth is complicated." His voice was soft, almost tender. "And I know that you're not your father and you're not Cipher. You're Scarla and I trust you."

She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "What do we do now?" she whispered.

"We survive." He held her tighter. "Together."
