Chapter 1 Return Home

In 2012, in Willie Town, Germany.

"Michelle, what happened?" With a pair of little slippers and a black tracksuit on, Richard Gu appeared at the door, staring at Michelle Gu in the middle of that mess.

"I'm fine! The bowl just accidentally slipped from my hands. Don't worry! A fire didn't start this time. Nothing's on fire..." Michelle Gu looked at her son, patted her chest and tried her best to pull herself together!

"..." Look! He had a bit of a foresight. Leaving his mother alone in the kitchen was such a big mistake! With that, she just turned around, grabbed the broom and cleaned it up. Once she got a hold of herself, she finally calmed down!

"Richard, wait! Mommy will definitely fix everything for your birthday party before 2 o'clock. Trust me!" Biting her lower lip, Michelle Gu thought to herself, 'Today is my dear son Richard's fifth birthday!' She had computed the time difference. Two o'clock in the afternoon would exactly be Chinese New Year's Eve. Although she had been living in Germany for almost five years, Michelle Gu still hadn't forgotten how she grew up in China and brought along with her the only person she considered her family-Richard Gu.

Raising his head, Richard Gu glanced at her rosy cheeks, which were glowing out of either embarrassment or excitement. He hesitated for a moment. Yes! This was his mother, Michelle Gu. Although she was already 22 years of age, she was actually still clueless in the ways of the world. In fact, her ability to take care of herself wasn't even as good as his, a five-year-old child. She volunteered to prepare a birthday dinner for him this morning and promised to let him watch over everything!

Others cooked to make money, but Michelle Gu-she cooked to kill somebody! 'I hope nothing bad happens anymore!' Otherwise, this building wouldn't be able to withstand another fire.

Michelle Gu squatted down and gestured toward her son like she was cheering for him. With a resolute look in her eyes, she told him, "Come on! I may not usually be capable, but today is different. It's my son's birthday, so I have to become a superhuman if I have to. Mommy will not let you down, my baby!" -

"Well, you don't have to try so hard. Just do what you can! Make sure you don't hurt yourself," he said. Then, he went on and added, sounding a bit concerned, "Michelle, if you can't do it, you still have me, Richard! You can rely on me." After saying that, he gently patted Michelle Gu's head. Then, he simply turned around and left, shaking his head in disappointment.

"Yes! I'll try my best!" "This brat! You're not giving me any credit at all! Have you forgotten that I was the one who gave birth to you? I may not be good at cooking or doing housework, but..." Of course, Michelle Gu could only whisper under her breath behind Richard Gu. Although her son might look like an elegant gentleman, as a matter of fact, he was actually a cunning little boy. What was she supposed to do as a mother? As she thought of that, she couldn't help but take a deep sigh.

In front of the window on the second floor, Michelle Gu seemed to still be quite busy, much like a little bee that was happily moving around.

Richard Gu went back to the living room. It was already one o'clock in the afternoon. Good! There were still some things that needed to be done, and an hour should be more than enough.

So, he walked into the study and locked the door behind him. Turning on the computer, he quickly typed something.

In the cyberspace world, he actually had a secret identity-the number one hacker in the world known as "The Heart".

Last night, he accepted a big job to sneak into an island and steal the new round of military base confidential information from the New Zealand Military Intelligence Classified Section. First and foremost, he had to prepare 11.11 million fake IP addresses for himself, just in case others would try to track him down. That way, even if they were to find some clues, 11.11 million addresses should be too much for them to investigate. After all, he had to protect the little woman in the kitchen well along with himself. His identity as a hacker should be kept a secret at all costs.

Then, he got into a Swiss bank's system to check his virtual account. There, he confirmed that the deposit had been made in the early hours of the morning. When he checked the GPS location of the sender and the remittance of the deposit, there were 24 possible places spread out all over the globe. It seemed that they were also being very careful not to reveal their identity. Needless to say, no matter how careful they might be, their efforts were all in vain in front of the number one hacker whatsoever. Once Richard Gu injected his special 'The Heart' virus into the computer, it quickly took over the computer and automatically connected it to the two other computers beside it. It started analyzing the data right away, and words written in blue appeared on the three screens simultaneously.

At that point, a red warning flashed on the screen in the middle. The search was a success. Looking at the time, everything took about three minutes.

As he stared at the address flashing on his screen, Richard couldn't hold back his excitement.

The United States, which had called for a global coalition to fight against terrorists, had relied on the skills of hackers to steal confidential information from other countries countless times. It would simply be like a thief shouting for arrest!

Richard decided to give them a bit of a scare; he sent the stolen information to the U.S. Central Intelligence Bureau.

After that, he clapped his little hands, and everything was done. His leisure time ended up being a little boring.

As he thought of the woman in the kitchen who was trying her best, his heart was filled with so much warmth. Michelle looked so cute when she was panicking earlier.

All things considered, his mother was a kind and lovely woman. However, she was a bit of a shrew and oftentimes confused. Throughout years, they had lived in this two-story house. They had a flower shop on the first floor and were living on the second floor. They were barely getting by. Although life had always been hard when they first came here, since he started making money, let alone making a living, they could easily afford to live a luxurious life.

Of course, there was no way Richard could tell his mother that he was the number one hacker in the world known as "The Heart". To make sure that stupid woman wouldn't have anything to worry about, he only told her that he could write some computer programs and sell them online, making a little money. Never in Michelle's wildest dreams would she think that her five-year-old son was actually the number one hacker in the world and a billionaire as well.

What was Michelle getting so excited about just now?

As far as he could tell, there weren't a lot of things that could make Michelle feel so excited. Other than him, there should only be that special period left.

Whenever Michelle had some free time, she would tell him things about the past. It was said that one morning six years ago, his mother suddenly woke up in the street of A City, with a headache and a blank mind. Everything seemed so strange. The streets and the crowds were unfamiliar to her and she couldn't even remember know who she was. All she had with her was a black jade pendant with 'Michelle Gu' engraved on it. Apart from that, she didn't know anything else. Michelle lost her memory, and she felt so confused and scared.

With the help of the police and some kind-hearted people, after several twists and turns, she finally found somewhere to stay for the time being.

Who was the person Michelle was calling in her dream?

Looking back on those countless nights, when Michelle was asleep, Richard could hear her screaming, "Go away, go away", "No, Richard..."

A deep frown appeared on Richard's face. Who was that man? What did he do to Michelle?

Richard had an early memory. When he was still very young, he had been envious of other children and asked Michelle why he didn't have a daddy. Every time he asked, Michelle would look at him with eyes filled with so much guilt and heartache, and she would keep silent.

When he heard how Michelle screamed and struggled in the middle of the night, he didn't dare to ask any more. He began to fear that his birth was nothing but a sin, and he was afraid that she would abandon him.

That night, he vowed to find the man who left Michelle feeling sad and scared and to make his life a living hell. It didn't matter who he was, he would do anything, even if that man was the devil himself.

All of a sudden-

"Crack! Crack!" He heard the sound of pots and pans falling on the floor coming from the kitchen. Checking the time on the bottom right of the computer screen, which showered '13:20', he thought to himself, 'It's almost done!' -

After withdrawing his sharp gaze, he walked out of the study and went back to the kitchen.

The aftermath of the battle... was horrible!

"Her blood type is a match. It’s the only option." I froze outside the conference room door, the quarterly reports digging into my ribs. I knew that voice. It was Ben, my husband’s best friend and doctor. But the next voice, cold and devoid of warmth, shattered my world. "Then we do it," my husband Ethan said. "Chloe cannot wait any longer. If Ava is the match, then Ava is the solution." For the past month, Ethan had been obsessed with my health, insisting on daily "vitamins" and endless checkups. He called it love. Standing in that hallway, I realized he was actually shopping for spare parts. "She is your wife, Ethan," Ben argued weakly. "You can't just harvest her like a crop." "She became my wife because she was useful," Ethan replied, his indifference cutting deeper than any scalpel. "Now, she can be useful for this." The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow. The nausea I’d been feeling wasn't stress. I was pregnant. And those "vitamins" he fed me every morning? They weren't supplements. They were poisons designed to ensure I remained a viable donor. He was killing his own child to save his mistress. To him, I wasn't a partner. I was livestock. An asset to be liquidated for parts. I didn't burst into the room. I didn't scream. I walked away in silence, my hand hovering over my stomach. He wanted my kidney? He wanted to carve me up? I decided right then. I wouldn't just leave. I would terminate the pregnancy, fake my death, and burn his entire world to the ground.

I was balancing four pitchers of watery beer when my phone buzzed with a photo of my cousin flaunting a massive pink diamond on the hand of my ex-fiancé. Jennings Bowen didn't just break our engagement; his family stripped away my medical scholarship and branded me a "reputational liability," leaving me to scrub grease in a Queens dive bar. When Jennings walked into my bar with the arrogance of old money, my alcohol-fueled rage took over, and I ended up vomiting all over his handmade Italian leather shoes. He didn't just have me arrested; he baited my younger brother, Leo, into a fight and had him charged with felony assault. "He’s nineteen, Bronwyn. We’ll bury him," Jennings whispered at the precinct, while his mother ensured no lawyer in the city would touch our case. With a fifty-thousand-dollar bail I couldn't pay and an eviction notice on my door, I was backed into a corner with absolutely nothing left to lose. I couldn't understand why these people were so obsessed with crushing someone who was already down, or how they could sleep at night while destroying a teenager's life. I realized then that playing by their rules wouldn't save Leo, so I dug out the set of black ceramic scalpels I had hidden under my bed for five years. I wasn't just a waitress or a failed student; I was "The Ghost," a surgeon who operated in the shadows where the law couldn't follow. I marched to the gates of the Phelps estate, the home of the billionaire father who abandoned me, ready to trade his life for my brother's freedom. "I'm here to save you," I told the dying man as his family watched in horror. "But the price is my brother’s life, and you’re going to pay it."

The city lights blurred, mirroring the chaos inside me. It was supposed to be our night, the gala where Jake, my fiancé, finally got recognition for a project built on my designs. But he was on stage, smiling under the bright lights, with my sister, Chloe, clinging to his arm. Just moments before, backstage, Chloe had stepped out of the shadows, a smug smile on her face. "He's with me now, sis." My world tilted. "The Skyline project… that was my work, Jake!" He had the nerve to look sad. "Ava, I took your concepts and improved them. I made them viable." I rushed to my parents' house for comfort, but found none. My father, with cold anger, declared, "Jake Peterson is now the most promising young architect in the city. And your sister is by his side. You made a scene. You embarrassed us." My mother dismissed my pain: "Chloe has always been better with people. This was bound to happen." My father added, "The Petersons are an old-money family. This connection is important for our business. You will not jeopardize that with your whining." It wasn't just Jake and Chloe. It was my own family, betraying me without a second thought. "They ruined me," I cried, "And you're worried about being embarrassed?" Their response was a brutal slap: "It's your own fault. You were always too trusting." I was completely alone, in the house I grew up in, a stranger in my own home. My career, my reputation, my love-all were gone. But then, a phone call. Jake, with fake sincerity, invited me to a dinner to show "no hard feelings." My response: "I have one condition. The engagement ring. I'll bring it to the dinner. I want to give it back to you in person." It wasn't just an ending; it was an exorcism.

It was our third wedding anniversary, and I sat alone at a dinner table set for two, a positive pregnancy test clutched in my hand. I' d imagined telling Ethan a thousand times, picturing his joy, the final piece of our life together clicking into place. But then headlights swept across the living room window, and relief turned to ice as I watched him help Chloe, his college sweetheart and the ghost of our marriage, out of the passenger door. I knew, in that single, shattering moment, that it was over. Chloe had waltzed back into our lives months ago, claiming heartbreak, and Ethan had swallowed it whole, canceling our plans to "cheer her up." Now, she was in our living room, draped on our couch, with Ethan stroking her hair, a tenderness he hadn't shown me in months. He accused me of being selfish for pointing out it was our anniversary, twisting our wedding vows into a weapon against me, defending Chloe with a venom I' d never seen directed at myself. The fight left me, all hope draining away as I realized the man I loved was gone, replaced by a stranger who saw me with annoyance and disdain. Then Chloe, with a smirk, told me I was just a placeholder, sending a photo of Ethan asleep in a hotel room, a kiss mark on his neck, sealing my fate. My world went silent, the brutal truth hitting me: I had never stood a chance against her, the great love of his life. I found the hidden divorce papers, a secret escape hatch he'd prepared, and signed my name. When he finally stumbled in, smelling of whiskey and her perfume, I showed him the photo, and then he left again, for her, leaving me to pick up the shattered pieces of my life. I was done being the quiet, steady one, the convenient wife. I called my best friend, Sarah, determined to leave, ready to protect the tiny, secret life growing inside me from this poison.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
