Flash Marriage: Drown In Your Tenderness Chapter 1 A Late Date

Sarah Swain oozed sophistication in her elegant, custom-tailored, black formal wear as she sat in a chair by the window of a coffee shop, relishing the view of the bustling city. The ambiance of the place in such honeyed hues brought a sweetness to her day, coaxing an inner smile that warmed her from within.

By the age of twenty-seven, Sarah had become one of the most prolific white-collar elites in the city. Unfortunately, even though she enjoyed great success in her career as an architect, her love life hadn't worked out the same way as she would have wanted.

In spite of the fact that most of her colleagues were males, sadly, Sarah's rigid personality managed to drive them far away from her. Sarah was considered to be the ice queen of the company by her peers, but they had no idea that she was a completely different person outside of work. While she waited for the blind date her mother had arranged for her, Sarah plunged a single sugar cube into the cup and stirred before taking a sip.

Her impatience indicated that she wasn't looking forward to this date. Perhaps, she would have felt excited about today's date if her mother hadn't arranged at least one blind date for her every week. This was the ninety-eighth time and also the second one this week.

Unfortunately, this was the only way to shut her mother up who wouldn't stop talking about her younger friends who already had grandsons. Exasperated, Sarah's fingers traced her face. Although her skin was still very smooth and tender, it felt nothing like it did seven years ago. After all, she was no longer in her early twenties. The thought spread a bitter taste in her heart, much like the coffee she was drinking.

Sarah thought back to when she was twenty-five years old, when the prospect of love still excited her. She sincerely hoped to put an end to these weekly blind dates as soon as possible. Besides, she could learn to love someone as long as the person wasn't too hard to live with. After all, she was no longer the naive woman she used to be and she didn't have time to nitpick anymore.

Sarah took a sip and glanced at her watch again. Her date today was already three minutes late. She kept telling herself to wait a little longer, just in case it was the heavy traffic that was keeping her date from showing up on time.

Had this been any other date, Sarah would have already got up and walked out of the coffee shop by now. However, Danna Swain, Sarah's mother, had stressed that Sarah's blind date was the son of her classmate, who had just recently returned from abroad. If she were to mess this up, her mother would keep arranging blind dates for her every day until she got married.

As such, even though her date was late, Sarah had to swallow her own anger. If there was anything she hated more than a blind date, it was an unpunctual one. Unfortunately, biting down her anger was the only way to avoid angering her persistent mother.

After Sarah checked the time on her watch a few more times, her date finally showed up.

"Excuse me, are you Miss Swain? I'm sorry to have kept you waiting, but the traffic was insane."

The man's gentle and elegant way of speaking drew Sarah's attention. She raised her head and stared at the man standing in front of her. He certainly looked the part of a well-educated gentleman with his hair arranged in a meticulous fashion, but he also looked quite old-fashioned. He too was smartly dressed for the occasion, in black formal wear and a pair of brightly shining leather shoes. "It's okay. I just arrived a few minutes ago." Sarah broke the ice with a comforting smile. However, the smile on her lips was forced. After all, everyone who lived in the city knew what the traffic was like during rush hours. Shouldn't he have at least gone out earlier? Besides, he made a girl wait for him for more than thirty minutes on their first date. What could Sarah look forward to in a man like that?

However, the moment the man saw Sarah, his eyes lit up. Fortunately for him, his mother, Tina, had a classmate whose daughter was just his type. After he came back from abroad, Tina arranged many blind dates for him, but none of those women were able to satisfy his standards for a beautiful woman, who had to be endowed with a pretty face, a perfect figure and long legs.

I received a pornographic video. "Do you like this?" The man speaking in the video is my husband, Mark, whom I haven't seen for several months. He is naked, his shirt and pants scattered on the ground, thrusting forcefully on a woman whose face I can't see, her plump and round breasts bouncing vigorously. I can clearly hear the slapping sounds in the video, mixed with lustful moans and grunts. "Yes, yes, fuck me hard, baby," the woman screams ecstatically in response. "You naughty girl!" Mark stands up and flips her over, slapping her buttocks as he speaks. "Stick your ass up!" The woman giggles, turns around, sways her buttocks, and kneels on the bed. I feel like someone has poured a bucket of ice water on my head. It's bad enough that my husband is having an affair, but what's worse is that the other woman is my own sister, Bella. ************************************************************************************************************************ "I want to get a divorce, Mark," I repeated myself in case he didn't hear me the first time-even though I knew he'd heard me clearly. He stared at me with a frown before answering coldly, "It's not up to you! I'm very busy, don't waste my time with such boring topics, or try to attract my attention!" The last thing I was going to do was argue or bicker with him. "I will have the lawyer send you the divorce agreement," was all I said, as calmly as I could muster. He didn't even say another word after that and just went through the door he'd been standing in front of, slamming it harshly behind him. My eyes lingered on the knob of the door a bit absentmindedly before I pulled the wedding ring off my finger and placed it on the table. I grabbed my suitcase, which I'd already had my things packed in and headed out of the house.

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
