Gangster's Girl Chapter 1 The Start

Catherine

I hide myself behind the boxes in the storeroom of my very own house. My mom left the area because she had no idea that I had the keys to this room too. As she left, he came out. "Damn, that was close"

"And you have to stop coming here" I warned him again. "You will get me killed"

"I just am telling you" he suddenly pushed me against the wall and a gasp escaped my mouth. "I get what I want"

"So you mean that you want me dead?" I raised my eyebrow. I was not shocked or scared by his intense gaze on me. Not because he was harmless-- but because he was like this, this was normal. "You know what, Cat?" he kept his thumb on my lips. "Let's run away"

I looked at him shocked. I don't want him to get any thoughts that might not fit my purpose in life. "A-Alex, no"

"I said, so yes"

"I don't want to, Alex. I have a life here"

He got away. "Life, life, life. Everyone has a life. Why am I like this then?"

I looked at him and he looked away. "It's okay, I'll just leave"

"Alex, see" I stopped him. "You also have a life"

"I don't have any life, Cat" he turned towards me. "I get new girls but that doesn't mean it's a life. I don't have anyone. Anyone who'd stay with me, permanently. Who'd show me the light"

"Alex, I-I can... But" he looked at me intently once again. "I can't leave this life... I-I.."

He nodded. "I understand, Cat. And that's the reason. A bad boy and a good girl can't be together"

I lowered my head and heard the footsteps fading. What can I do, Alex?

I woke up after this long break. It's kind of difficult, I am entering high school today! I am excited, yet I am quite scared. Not because of the studies, but because our new principal just changed everyone's sections and now I don't know if I'll get any friends back in the same class. I got ready and went downstairs to meet mom and dad. I ate breakfast and saying my goodbyes, I went to my bus and left for school. I reached here and damn, I am again nervous. I hate being surrounded by new people. I mean, everyone has to go through that at least one time - the moment when you first enter the school? The moment you are in a new class? And now, I have to maybe go through the same.

Without wasting more time, I went inside. I made my way to the office and three boys were taking their section names. I went and stood behind them, in the queue. The one boy, who looked or at least acted like the leader, took the cards for all of them. "Fuck, we are not in the same class, dude, " he said. He has to have some nerves cursing so loudly in the office room! "It's fine. Who stays in the class anyway?" one of them replied and they all almost laughed.

"Point" he replied. I was standing behind them and god, when will they leave?? The office mam was also not speaking anything. I decided to ask them to leave. "Um... Can you excuse me?" I asked them and the leader looked at me. Damn, he is handsome. "Oh yeah" he got out of the way and those other two boys followed him. I took my card and saw my section. X-B

Huh, I just hope I have some friends there. Maybe it was just my instinct, but I looked back while going out. The boys were still there, on the side, but the leader was staring at me. Gosh, I should go. I went from there and reached my class. After I reached my class, I looked at the students, and yeah! I have my bestie here. "Hey, Avery!" I said and she got up and came to me. She took me out and she was freaked out. "Gosh, Cat! You came! You almost gave me a heart attack! I thought you were in a different class..."

I smiled. "I did the same. But guess that you also wished equally that I am here!"

"Wait. You wished!?" she stared laughing. "Guess you didn't wish" I rolled my eyes. She laughed and then we went back to the class. The teacher hasn't arrived yet, so I am just talking to Avery. Many new students are there, only I guess a maximum of 10 students have remained, in which luckily I and Avery are here. But damn, why is Bain in the same class again? Yup, you must have guessed. He is my so-called ex.

And I hate him. I was just talking to Avery when suddenly she looked at the gate and froze. "Don't tell me he is in our class" she whispered. I followed the trail of her eyes and shit, I froze too. Why the hell is he here? "You know him?" I questioned her.

"You don't know him?" she raised her eyebrow.

"Not really... I just met him while taking my card. Not met him even, just told him to excuse himself so that I can take the card"

"Oh... He... Let me show you" she took out her phone and gave it to me. I saw the pics and he was like, in every picture, with a new girl. "So, he's a playboy?" I asked her, my eyes still fixed on the mobile screen. "A big one. The famous 'bad boy' of our school?"

"But how did I not know him?" I gave her the phone back. "Because to know him, you shouldn't be a nerd"

I looked at her with a bored and irritated face. I looked around and saw him looking afar, but damn, he was again looking at me.

Not really staring, but was looking at me again and again. "Why is he staring at you?" Avery questioned. "How can I know?" I asked back. "Go and ask him then" she suggested. "Go"

"Nope!" I snapped at her. "So you are just letting him stare at you?"

"Uh..."

"Go, dude"

"Okay... In dispersal"

She sighed and accepted. This guy is different. He is staring at me and damn, I know it. And he knows that I know, but still he is staring! Anyway, I passed the classes. I am really fed up with his stares, so I decided to talk at lunch itself. We went to the canteen during the lunch period. "Hm... Come, let's talk to him" I told Avery. "What? No way. You are talking to him"

"Are you crazy! How can I talk alone!"

"Why?" she rolled her eyes. "Come on dude"

"Don't tell me that Evan is here"

"You got me!" she smiled like crazy. Guess being in a relationship drives everyone crazy. I sighed and nodded. "Well...okay" I took some steps around and finally spotted him. He was talking to his friends. He should be alone if I talk to him. I waited for his friends to leave. His friends finally left when their 'girls' came and he was finally alone. I made my way to him.

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

I lived as the "scarred ghost" of the Stephens penthouse, a wife kept in the shadows because my facial burns offended my billionaire husband’s aesthetic. For years, I endured Kason’s coldness and my family's abuse, a submissive puppet who believed she had nowhere else to go. The end came with a blue folder tossed onto my silk sheets. Kason’s mistress was back, and he wanted me out by sunset, offering a five-million-dollar "silence fee" to go hide my face in the countryside. The betrayal cut deep when I discovered my father had already traded my divorce for a corporate bailout. My step-sister mocked my "trashy" appearance at a high-end boutique, while the sales staff treated me like a common thief. At home, my father threatened to cut off my mother's life-saving medicine unless I crawled back to Kason to beg for a better deal. I was the girl who took the blame for a fire she didn't start, the wife who worshipped a man who never looked her in the eye, and the daughter used as a human bargaining chip. I was supposed to be broken, penniless, and desperate. But the woman who stood up wasn't the weak Elease Finch anymore; she was Phoenix, a tactical predator with a $500 million secret. I signed the divorce papers without a single tear, walked past my stunned husband, and wiped the Finch family's bank accounts clean with a few taps on my phone. "Your money is dirty," I told Kason with a cold smile. "I prefer clean hands." The cage is open, the hunt has begun, and I’m starting with the people who thought a scar made me weak.

I lay paralyzed on stiff white sheets, a prisoner in my own skin, listening to the rain lash against the window like nails on a coffin. My father, Elmore Franco, didn't even look at my face as he checked his clipboard. He just listened to the steady, monotonous beep of the heart monitor-the only thing proving I was still alive. Without a hint of remorse, he pulled a pen from his pocket and signed the Do Not Resuscitate order. My stepmother, Ophelia, stepped out from behind him, wearing my favorite pearl necklace and smelling of cloying perfume. She leaned close to my ear to whisper the truth that turned my blood to ice. "It was the tea, darling. Just like your mother. A slow, tasteless poison." She chuckled as she revealed that my fiancé, Bryce, had a two-year-old son with my sister, Daniela. My inheritance had been funding their secret life for years, and now that the money was secure, I was an inconvenience they were finally scrubbing away. As my father yanked the power cord from the wall, the beeping died, and the darkness swallowed me whole. I was being murdered by my own flesh and blood, used as a bank account until I was no longer needed. I died in that sterile room, drowning in the realization that every person I ever loved was a monster who had been waiting for me to take my last breath. Then, I gasped. I woke up in a luxury hotel suite surrounded by silk sheets, five years in the past-the very morning of my wedding. Next to me lay Basile Delgado, the "Wolf of Wall Street" and my family's most dangerous enemy. In my first life, I ran from this room in a panic and lost everything. This time, I looked at the man who would eventually destroy my father's empire and decided to join him. "I'm not leaving, Basile. Marry me. Right now. Today."
