Chapter 1 prologue

Alexa

My name is Alexa Johnson but that was before my marriage, now I am known as Alexa Perkins. I'm 20 years old and wife to one of the hottest bachelor in New York, Elijah Perkins. At the age of 23, he is the owner of top companies in the world that he has built with his hard work along with his father's companies.

Well, let me cut the chase and tell you about how we first met.

*FLASHBACK*

The story begins with our college. When he was in his last year, I was a student of the first year. We had met once or twice but one incident changed everything.

Elijah appeared as a gentleman and savior in my life. One day when I was crossing the road to reach college, a car suddenly appeared on the road coming at me in the full speed.

I froze in shock as before crossing I had checked the road and it was clear to cross. But now I found my feet glued to the road and unable to move. All of a sudden I felt someone push me towards the side of the road. I had no serious injury but a scraped elbow. When I turned around to thank the person who saved me, I was shocked to see Elijah Perkins dusting his jeans. It was a shock to see him as we had zero interactions in our whole college life.

However, he bought me to a nearby clinic to get my elbow checked even after my instance to leave it be. I stood quietly as I had no idea what to say or do. It was all awkward for me as 'HE' the crush of the whole college was standing in front of me, fussing over me. I guess any girl would have died to be in my place right now.

After getting clearance from the doctor, he dropped me home and asked for my number. Well after that we became close. After months of being a friend, he asked me out. Even though I knew about his playboy image, I still accepted his proposal as deep down I knew, I had feelings for him. It felt like love at first sight.

Our first date was very romantic and at the end of the day, he asked me to be his girlfriend. I felt as if it was all a dream come true and replied with a yes. That was an unforgettable day. After that, I fell in love with him a little by little every day. I knew the feeling was mutual.

A month after our first date, Elijah graduated and had joined his father's company. However, I was still trying to survive the end of my first year. We had no problem with meeting up. We usually went on dates every weekend. He was perfect in every sense; sweet, caring, and gentle, all that I ever wanted. He was the one to state his feelings first as I was scared to admit that I loved him for the fear of rejection. The day he confessed his love for me, I became the happiest woman alive.

After 1 year of our dating, he proposed me to become his wife. I went in shock and realized after a few seconds that he had proposed. I said yes with tears in my eyes. It was one of the most special days of my life. He made my life beautiful. However, Elijah didn't want to be engaged for long so we decided to get married after two weeks. I knew it was insane but the heart wants what it wants, as Selena said. We had a grand wedding with more than thousands of guests.

The venue was very beautiful almost appearing magical with a theme of Ivory and Maroon color. I had a white off-shoulder sweetheart neckline gown with sleeves made of lace. The back of the gown was a corset style with a long train, I felt gorgeous wearing it. It truly felt like a dream come true after watching Elijah at the end of the altar.

We are just so happy with how our lives are going and hoping for kids in the future.

*END OF FLASHBACK*

It has been two years into our married life, and I still can't get over the fact that I have been married for so long. Elijah has always been a soft, sweet, romantic and caring husband to me. The presence of spark between us can still be felt. This is what all I have ever dreamt of, all I need now is a baby in our life.

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.

For seventeen years, I was the crown jewel of the Kensington empire, the perfect daughter groomed for a royal future. Then, a cream-colored envelope landed in my lap, bearing a gold crest and a truth that turned my world into ice. The DNA test result was a cold, hard zero percent-I wasn't a Kensington. Before the ink could even dry, my parents invited my replacement, a girl named Alleen, into the drawing room and treated me like a trespasser in my own home. My mother, who once hosted galas in my honor, wouldn't even look me in the eye as she stroked Alleen's arm, whispering that she was finally "safe." My father handed me a one-million-dollar check-a mere tip for a billionaire-and told me to leave immediately to avoid tanking the company's stock price. "You're a thief! You lived my life, you spent my money, and you don't get to keep the loot!" Alleen shrieked, trying to claw the designer jacket off my shoulders while my "parents" watched with clinical detachment. I was dumped on a gritty sidewalk in Queens with nothing but three trunks and the address of a struggling laborer I was now supposed to call "Dad." I traded a marble mansion for a crumbling walk-up where the air smelled of exhaust and my new bedroom was a literal storage closet. My biological family thought I was a broken princess, and the Kensingtons thought they had successfully erased me with a payoff and a non-disclosure agreement. They had no idea that while I was hauling trunks up four flights of stairs, my secret media empire was already preparing to move against them. As I sat on a thin mattress in the dark, I opened my encrypted laptop and sent a single command that would cost my former father ten million dollars by breakfast. They thought they were throwing me to the wolves, but they forgot one thing: I'm the one who leads the pack.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
