End of The World Chapter 1 A New Beginning

Zoe's POV

"My name is Jake Drew, after the pandemic broke out in Mars and killed almost everyone, a few people survived and are now on planet Earth. We need to know if some people still survived the pandemic, call this line if you get this." Jake said as he dropped the phone.

"It's useless." I muttered and pulled a chair close to him. Sitting down, I squeezed his hands gently.

"It's not useless, we left some people to die in Mars." He said, his voice wasn't calm.

"We didn't leave them to die, they didn't want to abandon Mars and besides, we don't know if Earth is safe." I replied and he looked at me. I didn't even know what was going through his mind.

We were never friends, I just wanted to have a talk with someone since most of the guys went into the forest to look for items.

"You're not our commander." He reminded as he scrunched up on his face which made me shudder.

"We don't have a commander yet." I said with a ragged sigh as I stood up.

"We should go back to Mars." He suggested.

"It sounds like a good idea." I replied and walked out of the tent.

He followed me outside, I felt myself growing impatient. "I've spoken to the other guys, they've agreed that we'll vote for a commander today." He said with a side smirk.

I tried maintaining a calm voice. Looking at him, I felt the urge to just fight him but I couldn't. Alexa came behind us holding a basket of fruits. "I brought this for us to eat, where are they?" She asked.

"They'll be back soon, they went to monitor the forest and look for something to eat." I answered.

She looked at me, then looked at Jake. "Are you guys having issues again?"

"Ask your silly friend." Jake answered and entered into the tent.

I looked at her, I felt anger growing up in my body, tears tickled in my eyes. "You should take some fruits." She suggested.

"Have you lost your mind?" I asked, rudely and she looked at me confused.

"I'm not the reason for your frustration."

"I'm sorry, it's just that we didn't eat in Mars and we stayed alive but when you guys tasted fruits, you became addicted to it." I said.

"You're just being so insecure, I know for a fact that we survive without food or water but we've found food here, shouldn't we eat it?" She asked, a faint glimmer of humor in her eyes.

I looked at her and sat down on a log of wood besides a tall tree, she also did the same thing. "Jake has been getting on my nerves right from Mars, I don't know what I've done to him." I said and she frowned.

"He's been like that." She simply replied and a small puppy ran towards us.

"There's a puppy on Earth?" She asked, surprised. I was also surprised, I didn't even know things could be on Earth, I thought everywhere would be deserted.

The puppy yipped while it turned in circles, she picked him up and gave him an Eskimo kiss making his little tongue dart out to lick her chin.

"Put him down." I ordered.

She held onto the puppy tightly, "I love puppies." She protested.

"It might be a spy." I replied as she dropped the puppy down, it ran away immediately.

"A spy?" She asked and laughed loudly. "C'mon, we're the only ones on Earth." She reminded, laughing as she stood up.

"I don't know, the war probably affected almost all the planets. Since we survived, people from another planet might have survived too."

"No one survived, we ranked the highest in the technology leaving the remaining planets with a gap so there's no possible way anyone survived." She reminded, feeling like an intelligent girl.

"Yeah, I guess so."

I stood up and sighted our people already coming back to the camp with a sack. My eyes looked for my boyfriend among them but I didn't see him. "They're back." She said, excitedly.

"So what's going on with you and Noah?" I asked, changing the topic as I nudged her with an elbow.

"I love Noah a lot but he's in love with Liam." She said and I raised an eyebrow in surprise.

"Now, how do you know this? Is he gay?" I asked.

"Yes, he's gay, surprisingly he's never really told Liam about his feelings."

"He shouldn't, Liam would just embarrass him and turn him down." I replied.

Suddenly, they reached where we stood and smiled to us. "So how many of our people went out?" I asked.

"30 actually, 10 stayed back in the camp while 10 are still in the forest." Matteo answered and I frowned.

I was going crazy. "Look, you agreed you would stay together, we're not sure if Earth is safe? I mean, the radiation killed many of our own in Mars, it could still kill us in Earth." I reminded, angrily.

"Zoe!" Alexa called out and I turned to look at her. "You need to keep calm and behave like someone who's okay." She added.

I chuckled. "Do I look okay to you?" I asked.

"You don't fucking tell us what to do, we are not dominated by women, fucking give yourself respect for us." Matteo said and walked away with the rest of the guys into the tent.

"You got served." Alexa mocked.

Picking up a gun from the other side of the wood, I walked into the forest. "Wait for me, I'm coming." I heard her shout from behind me, I didn't answer.

She ran past me and stopped in my front. "Look, the others will be safe, let's just head back and go back to the camp." She pleaded.

I scoffed. "I'm not going back to the camp."

"You're not a superhero, fuck you!" She replied and went back to the camp.

I stood for some seconds, I had to go and look for them, my boyfriend was there with them. I started walking through the forest. I just didn't know why they felt I was being too big and more experienced.

"Fools." I muttered and heard the echo of my voice. Suddenly, I heard someone say the same thing. Was it someone or something?

I turned back and saw a parrot on a tree. I knew a lot about animals because I always studied about them, I also felt like they might be wizards.

I was confused at that time, it was a parrot. I pointed my gun at it and fired a shot. The echo of the sound rang in my ears.

Watching it fall to the ground dead, I continued walking deep into the forest. I wondered how I would find them when the forest was big.

Suddenly, I heard a noise behind me and I stopped dead in my tracks.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband's Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn't find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn't even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father's legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn's party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara's health and managing every detail of Caden's empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I'd drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause-if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I'd forgotten.

I arrived at the hotel with Julian's favorite takeout, ready to surprise my fiancé before our big merger. But the moment I swiped the keycard, the silence of the hallway felt heavy and wrong. Inside, a red-soled stiletto lay on the marble floor-the same one I'd watched my best friend Lila try on at Saks last week. Through the cracked bedroom door, I watched Julian's back arch as Lila looked me straight in the eye and smiled, wrapping her legs tighter around him to mock my heartbreak. I fled to the penthouse to hide, only to find Grafton, Julian's "crippled" brother, waiting in the dark. To my horror, the man who was supposed to be paralyzed stood up from his wheelchair, gripped my chin with cold fingers, and forced me to sign a contract that gave him control of my family's shares. He knew about my mother's secret medical bills and used them to buy my silence, effectively turning my life into a calculated game of corporate chess. The betrayal tasted like acid, and the injustice of it all burned in my throat. My fiancé was a liar, my best friend was a thief, and the man now controlling my fate was a predator who had been faking his disability for years. I couldn't understand how everyone I trusted had turned out to be a monster. I was trapped between a man who cheated on me and a man who wanted to own me, with no way out and no one to turn to. But when Julian came looking for me, Grafton didn't hide; he stood tall, looming over me with a possessive glint in his eyes. "Help me destroy Julian," I rasped, realizing that to survive the Faulkner men, I had to become the most dangerous player of them all.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.
