The rich also cry Chapter 1 Prologue

Prologue

Grandpa Gregory and grandma Rosaline had gathered in the living room.

It was their fiftieth wedding anniversary and the guest had long gone home.

Their children and grandchildren with their spouses were all waiting to present them with the gifts they had specially gotten for them to celebrate their anniversary.

Caleb had joined them in the living room as they waited to present their gifts. He had only been married to Anna for a month so he had not gotten any gift and was not even aware that they would be celebrating their anniversary.

David the oldest child of the family and his wife spared no one especially if you were not from their social class. "What gift are you going to give dad and mum?' David laughed

"You can't even afford a decent meal talk more of getting someone a gift." Ella his wife joined her husband and they both roared in laughter.

Their daughter Kim grimaced, she had never supported their attitude towards others.

They both were a perfect fit, mannerless and snobbish, both believe they were the IT couple and made fun of people not minding how hurtful their words were.

Caleb had started to say something when their grandma chided him.

"You may be married to Anna but to us, you have the status of a servant, so don't feel you are our son-in-law or act like one. I am just tolerating you."

Caleb just stared short of words he had never felt so embarrassed in his entire life.

"Grandma, please be nice.' Anna pleaded.

"Do yourself a favor and get rid of him as soon as possible, whatever you were thinking, why marry such a man, he is beneath us and you know that. Anna, why are you walking in your father's footsteps? Anyway, what is there to expect from you when your father disobeyed me and married your mum." Grandma Rosaline said irritated.

Caleb started walking away; nothing he did was ever pleasing to this family.

"Caleb, wait," Anna called but he didn't stop, staying longer might make him say or do what he would regret later.

It was just a matter of time and he would be rid of this family for good.

I arrived at the hotel with Julian's favorite takeout, ready to surprise my fiancé before our big merger. But the moment I swiped the keycard, the silence of the hallway felt heavy and wrong. Inside, a red-soled stiletto lay on the marble floor-the same one I'd watched my best friend Lila try on at Saks last week. Through the cracked bedroom door, I watched Julian's back arch as Lila looked me straight in the eye and smiled, wrapping her legs tighter around him to mock my heartbreak. I fled to the penthouse to hide, only to find Grafton, Julian's "crippled" brother, waiting in the dark. To my horror, the man who was supposed to be paralyzed stood up from his wheelchair, gripped my chin with cold fingers, and forced me to sign a contract that gave him control of my family's shares. He knew about my mother's secret medical bills and used them to buy my silence, effectively turning my life into a calculated game of corporate chess. The betrayal tasted like acid, and the injustice of it all burned in my throat. My fiancé was a liar, my best friend was a thief, and the man now controlling my fate was a predator who had been faking his disability for years. I couldn't understand how everyone I trusted had turned out to be a monster. I was trapped between a man who cheated on me and a man who wanted to own me, with no way out and no one to turn to. But when Julian came looking for me, Grafton didn't hide; he stood tall, looming over me with a possessive glint in his eyes. "Help me destroy Julian," I rasped, realizing that to survive the Faulkner men, I had to become the most dangerous player of them all.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.
