My High School Romance Chapter 1 CH.1 - The Interview

THE PRESENT TIME

REBECCA'S POV

"Welcome to the Writer's Secrets, Ms. Javier! We are so elated that you have finally accepted our request to be a part of the show."

I shyly smiled at Maribella. "My apologies that it took so long. The last time you invited me, I was busy writing the High School Love Affair. No matter how much I wanted to accept your invitation, the deadline was chasing after me."

She laughed and patted her arm. "No worries, we all understand that. That is the most and greatest concern of all writers. But what can we do about it? A deadline is a deadline."

I nodded and softly chuckled. "That is true."

"That is why we are so glad that you are here since a lot of our viewers are actually curious about you. Can you tell us more about yourself?"

"I just started writing novels recently and I posted my first story online in a well-known reading app. Never did it occur to me that it will attract so much readers and attention that different companies started to contact me and offer a contract."

"Wow! That means you are a talented writer!"

I wrinkled my nose. "Thank you."

"What was the title of the first story you have written and what is the story all about?"

"The title was Taming Sunrise. The story is about twins whose bond was tested when a man named Caleb entered the picture. Dawn, the heroine was a man-hater while Caleb was a girl magnet. These two who has an opposite personality has to cease fire to help the other twin – Dusk with her role. This book is filled with humor, romance and... spicy scenes so I do not recommend it to our young readers."

"I think I have a new book to hunt." She chuckled. "Now, you mentioned the High School Love Affair earlier which was released last month, it was astonishing to see the progress of your book. It was immediately labeled as sold out in bookstores and was announced as bestseller worldwide. What do you feel about it?"

"I am highly ecstatic! Though there are moments when I just stare blanky at nowhere and question myself: is this real? Then my sister would yell at me and tell me over and over that this achievement is a hundred percent true. I'm really grateful to all of my readers and my family who supported me throughout my journey." I faced the camera and sent kisses. "Thank you all so much!"

She looked surprised. "You have a sister? I thought you are an only child?"

"Oh! What I mean was best friend. She's been staying with me for the longest time and our bond is just as strong as any other blood related sisters out there. So, she's like a real part of my family."

"I see..." She nodded. "So going back, it was indeed a magnificent breakthrough knowing that you just started writing novels this year so, I'd like to unravel your secrets on how to become a bestselling author." Her smile widened as she intently stared at me.

I can't help but swallow the air blocking my throat. I never really thought that being interviewed in this show was nerve wrecking.

"This is something that I always ask to my guests... What inspired you to write?"

Easy.

I smiled as the answer immediately surfaced in my mind. The tension I felt slowly disappeared.

"Well, ever since I was little, I already discovered my love for writing. The thing that influenced me the most was my diary that I hid under my bed. I would write things that happened to me all throughout the day and make a story out of it in my mind. My imagination during my teenage years was remarkable so most of the things I write today was a part of my teenage creativities or ideas."

"So, what do you normally write on your diary?" She suddenly asked that made me feel flustered. "If you don't mind me asking."

"Uhm... normal stuff." I feebly answered.

A sly smile slowly formed on her lips. "It's about your crush, isn't it?"

I timidly look away and heard her laugh. The crowd joined and teased her.

"I knew it!"

"I-Isn't that what most young girls write about?" I defended my action. "About how they fell in love with their classmate, what does the boy of their dream looks like, or about their daily life with their classmates?"

She gave me a side glance while maintaining the teasing smile on her. "Well, you do have a point. Then I'll move to my next question and please, answer this honestly Ms. Javier."

Oh no... I don't like that look.

"Is your book 'High School Love Affair' greatly influenced by your diary that was written by you during your high school life?"

I knew it! I shouldn't have talked about my diary!

I tittered.

"Well?" She was waiting for my answer with great anticipation.

I was left without any choice but to admit it. "Yes."

"Oh my God!" She squealed. "So that's the reason why most teenagers got hooked with your newest released book! I actually started reading it yesterday and I can relate to most of the scenes there. If only I do not have work, then I would have finished your book in one sitting."

I can see how much she really enjoyed my story and that made me feel happy. Still... It doesn't mean that I am out of the hot seat right now.

"I am glad to hear such wonderful praise from you."

"Seriously, the way you write it was superb! Who would have thought that your book was written with the personal experience you had when you were in high school?"

I let out a nervous laugh. Now everybody knows what I've been through when I was still a teenager.

"How much percentage of authenticity came out from your precious diary?" She curiously asked.

I bit my lower lip and contemplated whether to answer it or not but I finally made my decision. "I... I do not wish to disclose."

She giggled. "Totally understandable! Especially if you guys have read the book." She looked at the audience inside the studio. "Who among you has read her novel?"

I felt a bit suffocated after finding out that more than half of the people there has read High School Love Affair.

"But nonetheless, it is definitely worth reading." She smiled at me. "I'd like to ask though... what was the most embarrassing thing that the heroine has done for the hero in your story?"

"There's a lot." I softly chuckled. "Sadly, I do not want to spoil the story to those who hasn't read it yet."

"Oh, right! Silly me." She laughed. "Then, can you tell us the most embarrassing thing you have done when you were in high school to call the attention of your crush?"

Oh geez... There's a lot too.

I wanted to roll my eyes badly but I stopped myself for doing so. I pinned a mental note in my head that I will never talk about my diary again.

I took a deep breath and let out a sigh to compose myself.

"Your fans are waiting." She coaxed.

"What happened was..."

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.

I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."

I married Clive Harrington, the coldest billionaire in Manhattan, under a strict contract that forbade any emotional burdens. When I needed a high-risk surgery to save my sight, I checked into the clinic alone, hiding the procedure from a husband who saw me as nothing more than a legal asset. I thought I could handle the darkness in silence. But while I was blind and bandaged in my hospital bed, my biological mother called, screaming that if I didn't produce a Harrington heir by the end of the fiscal year, she would cut off the life-saving treatments for my disabled sister. I was crawling on the cold hospital floor, desperately feeling for a cane I had dropped, when I touched a pair of expensive leather shoes. It was Clive. He was supposed to be in London closing a multi-million dollar deal, but there he was, watching his "contract wife" groveling in the dark like a beggar. He didn't walk away in disgust. He carried me to a five-thousand-dollar-a-night VIP suite and sat by my bed, listening in chilling silence as another voicemail from my mother filled the room, calling me a "useless broodmare" who was only worth the trust fund disbursements my marriage secured. I expected him to remind me of Clause 34B or hand me divorce papers now that I was "damaged goods." Instead, I felt his thumb brush a stray tear from my cheek, his presence shifting from a statue of ice into a predatory shield. "I thought I was just currency to you," I whispered, my voice trembling behind the gauze. "Just an investment." Clive didn't answer with words. He picked up his phone and called his head of legal with a single, terrifying command: "Kill the Douglas family’s credit lines. Every debt, every lien—trigger them all. If they want a war, I’ll give them a massacre." As he leaned down to kiss my bandaged forehead, I realized the contract was dead. My husband wasn't protecting an asset anymore; he was hunting the people who had dared to touch what belonged to him.
