Saving Grace Part 1 Chapter 1 1

Chapter 1

The stark smell of bleach was overwhelming. Grace tried to fight the nausea rising in the pit of her stomach. She scrunched her eyes at the bright light that was sipping through her closed eyelids. The strong smell of disinfectant filled her nose. She could almost feel her lungs shrinking. She slowly opened her eyes, squinting, as she blinked severely in an attempt to sharpen the blurry images before her.

She heard the beeping of a machine and slowly turned her head toward the source of the noise. She groaned at the feeling of the stiff muscles at her neck; a massage right now would be heaven sent. She examined her surroundings. The room was pristine clean and gloomy, the walls were a sickly green color and the linens were grayish. The place looked nothing like a room where a patient should be motivated to get better. She gazed at herself through the transparent window and noticed she was in a hospital gown.

Her body was powerless and weak. She stared at her lower body, which was covered with a warm blanket, and she flung it aside. Her legs were covered with a thick whitish material that felt unnecessary. She tried to shift her legs, but they felt numb and heavy. She tried once more by shifting her head erratically, and due to the pressure she applied on her body, her head hung upside down at the tip of the hospital bed.

She recollected the last words she heard from a nurse before she was wheeled into the operation room.

"I don't think she's ever going to walk!"

Grace let out a shaky gasp as her thoughts were jumbled with different interpretations on her current situation. All she could remember was being bashed by an incoming car and she blacked out. Her muddled thoughts were halted when a pair of strong hands cupped her head gently and positioned it appropriately on the bed.

Grace lifted her neck and gazed at her saviour. He had thick tousled dark brown hair, which was thick and lustrous. His eyes were a mesmerizing deep ocean blue, silvery light performed ballets throughout. His face was strong and defined; his features seemed molded from granite. He had dark eye brows which sloped downward in a serious expression. His lips were pale and thin and his nose, slender and rounded; a prominent jaw curved gracefully around his neck and enamelled by the sun, he radiated energy and brio. His mountain peak cheekbones appeared chiselled into shape by a master craftsman. He was dressed in a white coat and a stethoscope hung around his neck was an icing on the cake added to his handsome features.

Completely mesmerized by the handsome stranger hovering over her face, Grace extended her right hand which trembled with shyness and placed it on his cheek.

"I must be in heaven because I am looking at an angel!" Grace said groggily, a smile etching on her face.

I had just survived a private jet crash, my body a map of violet bruises and my lungs still burning from the smoke. I woke up in a sterile hospital room, gasping for my husband's name, only to realize I was completely alone. While I was bleeding in a ditch, my husband, Adam, was on the news smiling at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. When I tracked him down at the hospital's VIP wing, I didn't find a grieving husband. I found him tenderly cradling his ex-girlfriend, Casie, in his arms, his face lit with a protective warmth he had never shown me as he carried her into the maternity ward. The betrayal went deeper than I could have imagined. Adam admitted the affair started on our third anniversary-the night he claimed he was stuck in London for a merger. Back at the manor, his mother had already filled our planned nursery with pink boutique bags for Casie's "little princess." When I demanded a divorce, Adam didn't flinch. He sneered that I was "gutter trash" from a foster home and that I'd be begging on the streets within a week. To trap me, he froze my bank accounts, cancelled my flight, and even called the police to report me for "theft" of company property. I realized then that I wasn't his partner; I was a charity case he had plucked from obscurity to manage his life. To the Hortons, I was just a servant who happened to sleep in the master bedroom, a "resilient" woman meant to endure his abuse in silence while the whole world laughed at the joke that was my marriage. Adam thought stripping me of his money would make me crawl back to him. He was wrong. I walked into his executive suite during his biggest deal of the year and poured a mug of sludge over his original ten-million-dollar contracts. Then, right in front of his board and his mistress, I stripped off every designer thread he had ever paid for until I was standing in nothing but my own silk camisole. "You can keep the clothes, Adam. They're as hollow as you are." I grabbed my passport, turned my back on his billions, and walked out of that glass tower barefoot, bleeding, and finally free.

I spent three years playing the role of a submissive, small-town wife for Evertt Baker, trading my true identity for a quiet life in a Manhattan penthouse. I thought my devotion would be enough to build a real home, but I was just a placeholder in his grand design. The illusion shattered at 2 AM when Evertt walked in smelling of Chanel No. 5—the signature scent of his mistress, Adda. Without a word of apology, he dropped divorce papers on the table, demanding I sign them immediately so he could finally be with the woman he truly loved. He looked at me with pure disgust, flicking a five-million-dollar check toward me as if he were paying off an incompetent employee. He told me it was more money than anyone from my "trailer park" background would ever see and ordered me to hurry because Adda was waiting in the car downstairs. He didn't care that I had spent years nursing him through illness and tolerating his family’s insults; he only cared about his own convenience. The sheer arrogance of his payout and the blatant disrespect of bringing his mistress to our home was the final blow. I realized that the man I loved never actually saw me, only the submissive shadow I had forced myself to become. I signed the papers with a fluid scrawl he didn't bother to check, then I fed his millions into the office shredder. I pulled a hidden, encrypted device from a kitchen drawer and dialed a number I hadn't called in three years. "Brother," I said, my voice finally steady. "Come get me. The game is over." Evertt thought he was discarding a penniless nobody, but he was about to find out that he had just declared war on the Stafford empire.
