Chapter 1 A body in the water

Location: New York

Laila sat in her living room, eating a large hamburger

"Um.. yeah, this is a good hamburger"

She said after eating a bite

"Oh my goodness, I ought to be on diet and I'm here eating this hamburger"

She stared and smiled

"Oh well"

She took another bite

Immediately, she heard a door open and she knew who it was. Quickly, she hid the hamburger under her pillow on the couch

"Hey babe"

A guy entered and smiled at her

"Hey sweetheart"

She said sitting on the couch

"How are you?"

He said after kissing her

"I'm good and you?"

She asked but didn't get an answer instead she got a frown

"What's wrong?"

"Did you eat a hamburger?"

He asked and she widened in shock

"What!! Not"

She denied

"Really?"

He moved close to her

"Yes"

"Don't lie to me, your mouth taste like a hamburger, now spill it"

"Fine, I'm sorry"

She said bringing out the food she hid under the pillow

"Laila, you know very well you ought to be on diet, you have a modeling job in the next few days"

"I know, but I can't stand eating...

"Laila, if you want to get the job, you have to lose weight"

"But I'm perfectly okay"

"You need to look séxy, I'm doing this for your sake, my mom is the owner of the company and I volunteered you to model her designs"

"I know Adam, I'm sorry baby"

She said and hugged him

Adam smiled before answering

"Nah, it's okay"

"Good, since you are here, we can both go out"

She smiled

"Um...I came here to have fun with you indoors"

He caressed her hair

"I know but I'm in the mood to go out, don't you think?"

"Um..no, I'm in the mood to stay with you, let's have fun here"

"Adam!!"

She whined

"Laila!!"

He did the same and smiled just to tease her

She gave him adorable puppy dog eyes

"Please baby"

"I'm not falling for that again"

He ignored her looks

"Pretty please"

"No, I want to stay here with you"

"Whatever"

Laila said angrily and avoided his looks

Adam rolled his eyes and stared at her

"Fine, where do you want to go to?"

Laila smiled and turned back to him

"Let's go to the beach"

"Beach?"

He arched

"Yes, it's been long since I have gone there, this is summertime so we should enjoy it"

"Okay, we will both go"

He smiled...

"After our exercise"

She stared at him confusedly

"What exercise?"

He claimed for her lips and smiled

"You know the exercise I'm talking about?"

He whispered caressing her body

Both Laila and Adam got to the beach as promised, Adam drove her there but unfortunately, no one was on the beach

"Oh no, we are the only ones here"

Laila said

"So what? It's no big deal"

"No, it's will be super boring, let's leave''

"Not, I drove for a long time and since we are here, let's have fun"

"Okay"

She said softly

15 minutes later

"I'm gonna go take a dive into the water"

Laila said

"Sure.....um.... have fun"

Adam replied staring at his phone

Immediately Laila put on her bikini and dived into the water, she swam from one wave to another

She decided to go deep into the water, she entered and swam inside the water but immediately she got out running towards Adam

"Adam! Adam!!"

She yelled running towards him

"Yes baby"

He replied still on his phone

"There is something in the water"

She said worriedly

"Uh"

He rolled his eyes

"It's called a fish"

"I know what a fish is, you have to come"

"Then it's a jellyfish"

"It's not a jellyfish, believe me, you have to see this, come to the water"

"Ughhh, I just put on sunscreen lotion"

"Adam!!'

"Fine"

He stood up from his mat and walked towards Laila

He dived into the water and went deep until he spotted something

"Oh my goodness"

He yelled rushing out of the water

"Did you see it?"

"I saw it, what is that?"

He asked worriedly

"Oh come on, don't tell me you are scared".

"Of course I'm scared, that looks like a nightmare"

"Did you at least know what it is"

"It's looked like a human statue "

"That doesn't look like a statue, it looks like a human body"

"What!! That is way worse, it's so creepy"

"We have to get it"

"Get what?"

"Get the body"

"Are you out of your mind? You want to get a dead body"

"It's might not be a dead body, it's might just be someone in there who needs our help"

"No way...

"Please, what if the person drowned and it needs help"

"I am not going in there just to bring a body"

He yelled and they both stared at each other for a while

Laila arched and folded her arms

"Fine!! If you will not go, I will have to do it myself"

She said running towards the ocean

"Wait, it's way too deep, you might drown.....

He yelled but unfortunately, she didn't hear him, she had entered the water

"Oh my God, this girl is impossible...

He muttered and later followed her

**********

It's taken three minutes before they both got back with the body they found

"I knew you would come around"

Laila said dragging the body

"Yeah whatever, do you have any idea what you've done"

He yelled

"No!"

"Ughhhhhhhhhhhh, we could get arrested for this"

"Why? We didn't do anything"

She smiled and stopped with the body

"That's not what the police will think when they find out"

"Don't yell at me"

She said

"Whatever, I'm out of here"

"Wait babe, I can still feel her pulse, she is just unconscious"

She said immediately

"Laila, for crying out loud, we don't even know her, she doesn't look like us, she looks like a Chinese lady"

"I know right, so cool"

"Ughhh, I'm leaving and this time I'm not stopping"

He said walking out of the beach

Laila felt the lady's body and she felt cold, she could still feel her pulse, which means she wasn't in the water for long

Unexpectedly, the body woke up breathing heavily........

"Oh my goodness"

Laila yelled

Still breathing heavily, Laila pressed her chest repeatedly and yelled...

"Adam, look"

Immediately Adam turned around and his eyes widened in shock

"Adam, come quick"

She said still pressing the lady's shirt

Quickly, Adam ran towards Laila and stared at the body coughing and gasping for air

"Adam, we have to give her CPR"

"CPR? Mouth to mouth...

"Yes"

"Okay, I'll do it"

"No, let me do it, I don't want you to kiss her"

She said and quickly breath air into the lady

She did the first time, second time, third time until she felt the heart of the lady

"She is breathing"

She said

"Oh!"

"Let's take her to the hospital"

"What!!"

"Hospital now!!"

"Ughhhhhhhhhhhh, but...

"We have to save a life"

She yelled and Adam sighed

"Fine, you owe me for this"

He said and carried

I spent four hours preparing a five-course meal for our fifth anniversary. When Jackson finally walked into the penthouse an hour late, he didn't even look at the table. He just dropped a thick Manila envelope in front of me and told me he was done. He said his stepsister, Davida, was getting worse and needed "stability." I wasn't his wife; I was a placeholder, a temporary fix he used until the woman he actually loved was ready to take my place. Jackson didn't just want a divorce; he wanted to erase me. He called me a "proprietary asset," claiming that every design I had created to save his empire belonged to him. He froze my bank accounts, cut off my phone, and told me I’d be nothing without his name. Davida even called me from her hospital bed to flaunt the family heirloom ring Jackson claimed was lost, mocking me for being "baggage" that was finally being cleared out. I stood in our empty home, realizing I had spent five years being a martyr for a man who saw me as a transaction. I couldn't understand how he could be so blind to the monster he was protecting, or how he could discard me so coldly after I had given him everything. I grabbed my hidden sketchbook, shredded our wedding portrait, and walked out into the rain. I dialed a number I hadn't touched in years—a dangerous man known as The Surgeon who dealt in debts and shadows. I told him I was ready to pay his price. Jackson and Davida wanted to steal my identity, but I was about to show the world the literal scars they had left behind.

I sat in the gray, airless room of the New York State Department of Corrections, my knuckles white as the Warden delivered the news. "Parole denied." My father, Howard Sterling, had forged new evidence of financial crimes to keep me behind bars. He walked into the room, smelling of expensive cologne, and tossed a black folder onto the steel table. It was a marriage contract for Lucas Kensington, a billionaire currently lying in a vegetative state in the ICU. "Sign it. You walk out today." I laughed at the idea of being sold to a "corpse" until Howard slid a grainy photo toward me. It showed a toddler with a crescent-moon birthmark—the son Howard told me had died in an incubator five years ago. He smiled and told me the boy's safety depended entirely on my cooperation. I was thrust into the Kensington estate, where the family treated me like a "drowned rat." They dressed me in mothball-scented rags and mocked my status, unaware that I was monitoring their every move. I watched the cousin, Julian, openly waiting for Lucas to die to inherit the empire, while the doctors prepared to sign the death certificate. I didn't understand why my father would lie about my son’s death for years, or what kind of monsters would use a child as a bargaining chip. The injustice of it burned in my chest as I realized I was just a pawn in a game of old money and blood. As the monitors began to flatline and the family started to celebrate their inheritance, I locked the door and reached into the hem of my dress. I pulled out the sharpened silver wires I’d fashioned in the prison workshop. They thought they bought a submissive convict, but they actually invited "The Saint"—the world’s most dangerous underground surgeon—into their home. "Wake up, Lucas. You owe me a life." I wasn't there to be a bride; I was there to wake the dead and burn their empire to the ground.

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.
