Chapter 1 Seeing the other side of wealth

Camila's P.O.V

' Camila! ' I heard my dad call me.

' Yes dad ' I yelled as I got up from my bed and ran outta my room. I ran all the way down the stairs till I got to the living room.

' Camila I've told you not to run down the stairs again, you could trip and fall ' My mom cooed.

' Mum, I'm a be girl okay, I can't fall ' I said with an eyeroll.

' Yeah, yeah you say that every time ' My younger brother chipped in as he came out of the kitchen with a bowl of flakes in his hands

' Diego!' i half yelled.

' That's my name I guess ' He said nonchalantly.

Yeah, that's my brother, always getting on my nerves. Even though I'm three years older than he is, he always act like we are age mate. Like I'm twelve and he's just nine for fuck sake.

I opened my mouth to get back at him but was interrupted by my dad.

' Okay, can you both quit this?' He asked with a sigh looking from me to Diego.

' Dad he started it ' I said pouting my lips.

' Just leave him okay?'

I took a glance at my Diego and saw him sticking his tongue out at me, then I gave him the middle finger.

' Camila! ' My mum said sternly.

' Sorry mum ' I said with a giggle.

She hates it when I do that, but I can't control it, like I'm so used to it.

' Okay I'm off to the Salvadors ' Dad said as he stood up.

' Dad, dad...' I ran up to stand in his front and he looked at me puzzled.

' What is it?' He asked.

Then I quickly brought out my girly charm and held him by the arm as I looked up at him.

' Dad can I come with you?' I asked with pouted lips.

' What? Why do you want to come?'

' I just wanna come with you, It's better than been here and stuck with Diego ' I said the last part loud enough for my brother to hear.

' No you can't' He said and made to leave but I pulled his arm hard.

' Dad, please, please, pleeeease....'

' Fine ' He said with a sigh.

' That's it? I can come?' I asked with a tone of excitement.

' Not like I have a choice ' He mumbled.

' OMG! Thanks dad, let me go get dressed...I'd be right back ' And with that I ran upstairs to my room.

' Sergio is she gonna let you concentrate over there ?' I heard my mom say behind me.

I got dressed and together my dad and I left for the Salvadors'.

' Woah! ' I exclaimed as we got closer to the Salvadors house, their house was really big. I swear my house wasn't even up to a quarter of this.

My dad horn and immediately the big gate was opened to let us in.

Wait, how did they know we were the one, what if it was some robbers or something, out of curiosity I asked my dad.

' Dad how did they know we were the one?'

' There's a camera just outside the compound and I come here regularly, so they recognized my car. ' He answered.

' Oh! ' I mouthed.

My dad always come here though, he and Uncle Fernando were both furniture designers. Dad once told me that they both grew up together and attended the same school, even though uncle Fernando was from a rich family and dad from a middle class, they didn't let it disturb their friendship. We can say that they are best of friends.

As we drove in, my mouth fell open as I stared at the beautiful structure before me, I literally felt like I was in paradise.

They was a big fountain at the middle of the compound with two bird statues on either side of it. The house it self was...no this isn't a house, it's a...a mansion, God! It was another thing on it's own, It looked really magnificent, like one of those mansions they use in soap operas.

This was actually my first time here...

My dad parked his car in the garage and my eyes widened seeing all the cars there, Oh My God! Do they really own all these cars? Geez! These people are damn rich.

' Ain't you coming down? ' I heard my dad say.

' Huh? '

' You wanna come or not?' He asked again.

' oh! Yeah, yeah...' I said as I hurriedly came out of the car and I ran round the car to meet my dad. He held my hand and we walked towards the mansions .

As we walked closer, that was when I noticed some men in suits around the compound, I was so lost in the beauty of the mansion that I didn't even notice them. They looked huge, guess they are the bodyguards.

' Hey Marco ' My dad waved at one of the bodyguards.

' Hi sir ' He replied.

Yeah I forgot, dad always comes here...I thought with an eye roll.

When we got to the main door, a guard standing beside it, opened it for us and I couldn't help but giggle, I actually felt like I was important.

When we got inside the main house, my mouth fell open at the sight before me, I stared dumbly unable to blink, If I thought the outside was magnificent, then the interior is purely Heaven!

Wait, I'm I dead? I thought as I pinched my cheek hard.

' Ouch!'

Okay, I'm alive...

I was sitting in the Presidential Suite of The Pierre, wearing a Vera Wang gown worth more than most people earn in a decade. It was supposed to be the wedding of the century, the final move to merge two of Manhattan's most powerful empires. Then my phone buzzed. It was an Instagram Story from my fiancĂ©, Jameson. He was at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris with a caption that read: "Fuck the chains. Chasing freedom." He hadn't just gotten cold feet; he had abandoned me at the altar to run across the world. My father didn't come in to comfort me. He burst through the door roaring about a lost acquisition deal, telling me the Holland Group would strip our family for parts if the ceremony didn't happen by noon. My stepmother wailed about us becoming the laughingstock of the Upper East Side. The Holland PR director even suggested I fake a "panic attack" to make myself look weak and sympathetic to save their stock price. Then Jameson’s sleazy cousin, Pierce, walked in with a lopsided grin, offering to "step in" and marry me just to get his hands on my assets. I looked at them and realized I wasn't a daughter or a bride to anyone in that room. I was a failed asset, a bouncing check, a girl whose own father told her to go to Paris and "beg" the man who had just publicly humiliated her. The girl who wanted to be loved died in that mirror. I realized that if I was going to be sold to save a merger, I was going to sell myself to the one who actually controlled the money. I marched past my parents and walked straight into the VIP holding room. I looked the most powerful man in the room—Jameson’s cold, ruthless uncle, Fletcher Holland—dead in the eye and threw the iPad on the table. "Jameson is gone," I said, my voice as hard as stone. "Marry me instead."

I watched my husband sign the papers that would end our marriage while he was busy texting the woman he actually loved. He didn't even glance at the header. He just scribbled the sharp, jagged signature that had signed death warrants for half of New York, tossed the file onto the passenger seat, and tapped his screen again. "Done," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. That was Dante Moretti. The Underboss. A man who could smell a lie from a mile away but couldn't see that his wife had just handed him an annulment decree disguised beneath a stack of mundane logistics reports. For three years, I scrubbed his blood out of his shirts. I saved his family's alliance when his ex, Sofia, ran off with a civilian. In return, he treated me like furniture. He left me in the rain to save Sofia from a broken nail. He left me alone on my birthday to drink champagne on a yacht with her. He even handed me a glass of whiskey—her favorite drink—forgetting that I despised the taste. I was merely a placeholder. A ghost in my own home. So, I stopped waiting. I burned our wedding portrait in the fireplace, left my platinum ring in the ashes, and boarded a one-way flight to San Francisco. I thought I was finally free. I thought I had escaped the cage. But I underestimated Dante. When he finally opened that file weeks later and realized he had signed away his wife without looking, the Reaper didn't accept defeat. He burned down the world to find me, obsessed with reclaiming the woman he had already thrown away.

Today is October 14th, my birthday. I returned to New York after months away, dragging my suitcase through the biting wind, but the VIP pickup zone where my husband’s Maybach usually idled was empty. When I finally let myself into our Upper East Side penthouse, I didn’t find a cake or a "welcome home" banner. Instead, I found my husband, Caden, kneeling on the floor, helping our five-year-old daughter wrap a massive gift for my half-sister, Adalynn. Caden didn’t even look up when I walked in; he was too busy laughing with the girl who had already stolen my father’s legacy and was now moving in on my family. "Auntie Addie is a million times better than Mommy," my daughter Elara chirped, clutching a plush toy Caden had once forbidden me from buying for her. "Mommy is mean," she whispered loudly, while Caden just smirked, calling me a "drill sergeant" before whisking her off to Adalynn’s party without a second glance. Later that night, I saw a video Adalynn posted online where my husband and child laughed while mocking my "sensitive" nature, treating me like an inconvenient ghost in my own home. I had spent five years researching nutrition for Elara’s health and managing every detail of Caden’s empire, only to be discarded the moment I wasn't in the room. How could the man who set his safe combination to my birthday completely forget I even existed? The realization didn't break me; it turned me into ice. I didn't scream or beg for an explanation. I simply walked into the study, pulled out the divorce papers I’d drafted months ago, and took a black marker to the terms. I crossed out the alimony, the mansion, and even the custody clause—if they wanted a life without me, I would give them exactly what they asked for. I left my four-carat diamond ring on the console table and walked out into the rain with nothing but a heavily encrypted hard drive. The submissive Mrs. Holloway was gone, and "Ghost," the most lethal architect in the tech world, was finally back online to take back everything they thought I’d forgotten.
