Kiara Collins has a curse. A curse that goes by the name of clumsiness. Despite being confident and bold, she tumbles over anything and everything; whether it's furniture or air, Kiara is almost positive that no one can beat her when it comes to her eternal embarrassment of being a klutz. So, when her so-called 'curse' causes her to trip onto Connor Blake, the academy's richest student, and end up locking lips with him, Kiara is absolutely mortified and is sure that the rest of her life will end up with her digging herself into a hole and never coming out. After all, a boy like him is sure to take every chance he can get to embarrass her over the incident, right? Wrong. Instead of doing what most people would do, Connor decides to befriend the clumsy yet confident girl. And somewhere along the way, he realizes that maybe a kiss with her won't be so bad. •-•-•

Chapter 1 The kiss

I slowly walked down the hallways, my arms clutching two textbooks that my past classes had given me as I made my way through the talking students who were all headed towards lunch.

Everyone looked so at ease, so used to being in a lifestyle of riches and happiness, but me? I was freaking out.

So far, I've managed to trip over the stairs (twice), hit my head against my locker ( four times ), and smack my teacher by accident with the whiteboard eraser as I went to turn around (thank God, only once for that ). I was beyond embarrassed but I was just glad that now I could eat in peace and not worry about choking on my food in front of others since I would go to the library and do so alone.

Deciding to stop by my locker, I made a turn and counted down the numbers that labeled the lockers before I found mine, doing its combination quickly before shoving my books inside and slamming it shut. I then proceeded to brush the imaginary dust off of my plaid skirt that all the girls were required to wear and straightened my white, collared shirt before taking a deep breath and heading into the cafeteria.

As soon as I entered, it was chaos. Loud laughter filled the air, and I watched with wide eyes as girls chatted together and boys shoved each other's shoulders, goofing off about stupid stuff that probably were significant to them.

Students were getting into the rather large line and buying their lunch while the ones that weren't were unpacking whatever their maids had made for them. I stood there, wondering for a moment if I would ever be able to fit in. After all, I wasn't a billionaire's daughter or son like they were. Sighing, I strolled towards the line and grabbed a tray, making sure not to slip on any of the food that had dropped to the floor before flashing a bright smile to the lunch lady who was plopping some pasta onto my plate.

I went through the rest of the line with no trouble and found myself feeling proud. This was one of the first times in history where I'd managed not to do something stupid. With a satisfactory grin, I turned, making my way towards the exit doors when someone stuck their foot out and caused me to fall face-forward. - Into my pasta.

For a moment, I laid there, stunned. And then mortification settled in and I hurriedly sat up, wiping my chin of the tomato sauce before I blinked my lashes upward to see a laughing table full of boys and girls, the one girl at the corner with her phone out as she took a video. I could only gape at her.

"What? Have no words, newbie?" she challenged, and I found my cheeks flushing in embarrassment.

I knew I'd spoken too soon. Deciding not to respond, I scrambled to my feet but as I did so, I managed to slip on some of the sauce that was on the floor and the next thing I knew, I was falling face-forward again. Except this time, I landed on a boy who'd been standing in front of me. I felt my hands connect to a muscular chest before I felt my lips press against something soft and warm... Oh my God.🙆

I was kissing the boy underneath me.

Horrified, I jerked away and crawled off the poor guy, my hand flying up to cover my mouth in shock while the guy blinked furiously before sitting up, his gaze locking with mine. There, sitting on the floor next to me with sauce remnants from my shirt now smeared on him was a gorgeous Adonis, with deep blue eyes and thick, dark brown hair that held bits of pasta in it.

He looked stunned before he shook himself out of his daze, glancing up at the table to see the girl who'd been recording glaring at me. "Did you just kiss him?" she snarled, while everyone else behind her laughed.

"I-I didn't do it on purpose!" I blurted, my cheeks so red by now that I knew I looked like a fire hydrant.

"That's my fucking boyfriend, bitch!"

"How the fuck was I supposed to know that?!" My eyes widened and I clamped my mouth shut.

I usually didn't curse unless I was extremely embarrassed or angry, which made sense right now since I was feeling both.

The girl continued to glare at me, her phone now on the table as she stood up but before she could try anything, the boy who I'd tripped on and accidentally kissed scrambled to his feet and stood between us.

"Leave it, Layla," he stated. "She didn't do it on purpose."

"Yes, she did! I embarrassed her so now she's trying to get back at me!"

"Excuse me?" Now, I was on my feet too, shoving the boy aside so I could be in front of her. "I'm not that revengeful that I'd deliberately kiss your boyfriend! This is my first fucking day! I don't know anyone."

"Just get out of my sight," she snapped, and I opened my mouth to retort when a warm hand wrapped around my forearm and yanked me away from the scene, dragging me out of the cafeteria before I could get myself suspended.

"Let go of me," I snarled, my cheeks burning bright red as I tried to make the boy drop his grip but he wouldn't budge. Instead, he led me into the girls' bathroom and stopped in front of the mirror, making me watch my pasta-covered reflection while he grabbed napkins and wet them before handing them to me to wipe my hair and shirt.

"I don't need your help," I muttered, taking the napkins and rubbing them against my shirt anyway.

He crossed his arms, "I know. I just thought I'd be polite."

"Your girlfriend lacks that category." Despite the situation, a smile twitched the corner of his lips, "She's not my girlfriend." My head snapped to the side, " What? " "Layla's...an interesting case. She's a bit protective over me."

"Great. So, I have a psycho bitch to hate me for eternity."

He grinned, "You also have a handsome, hot Greek god to call you Clumsy."

I cocked a brow, "I thought you said you weren't egotistical."

"It's okay to be a little self-confident, right?"

A small laugh escaped my lips and I glanced at my reflection, glad that most of the damage was gone except for the large red stain that was on the middle of my shirt.

"Well, I guess, everyone will think I came back from murdering someone," I stated, sighing as I threw the napkins into the trash.

"You can say I was your partner-in-crime," the boy added, and I felt a smile form on my lips.

"Sure thing, bub. But what exactly does my partner-in-crime go by?"

A sly smile curved his lips as he headed towards the door, his hand wrapping around the handle as his striking blue eyes met mine. "Connor. Connor Blake."

I gave a wave of my fingers, "See you whenever, Connor."

He gifted me a small salute. "Later, Clumsy."

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.

I had been a wife for exactly six hours when I woke up to the sound of my husband’s heavy breathing. In the dim moonlight of our bridal suite, I watched Hardin, the man I had adored for years, intertwined with my sister Carissa on the chaise lounge. The betrayal didn't come with an apology. Hardin stood up, unashamed, and sneered at me. "You're awake? Get out, you frumpy mute." Carissa huddled under a throw, her fake tears already welling up as she played the victim. They didn't just want me gone; they wanted me erased to protect their reputations. When I refused to move, my world collapsed. My father didn't offer a shoulder to cry on; he threatened to have me committed to a mental asylum to save his business merger. "You're a disgrace," he bellowed, while the guards stood ready to drag me away. They had spent my life treating me like a stuttering, submissive pawn, and now they were done with me. I felt a blinding pain in my skull, a fracture that should have broken me. But instead of tears, something dormant and lethal flickered to life. The terrified girl who walked down the aisle earlier that day simply ceased to exist. In her place, a clinical system—the Valkyrie Protocol—booted up. My racing heart plummeted to a steady sixty beats per minute. I didn't scream. I stood up, my spine straightening for the first time in twenty years, and looked at Hardin with the detachment of a surgeon looking at a tumor. "Correction," I said, my voice stripped of its stutter. "You're in my light." By dawn, I had drained my father's accounts, vanished into a storm, and found a bleeding Crown Prince in a hidden safehouse. They thought they had broken a mute girl. They didn't realize they had just activated their own destruction.
