Chapter 1 The Emergency department

NURSE KIM......NURSE KIM...

*silence*

all that Abby heard after she called out was the sound of her own breathing.

Abby scanned the whole area and no sign of Kim the head nurse, she thought to herself

'How is it that she is always missing when things get busy'

she took a deep breath and slowly released it with her eyes closed trying to calm herself

as soon as she opened her eyes her phone started ringing, she rolled her eyes, cleared her throat 'ahem'...

and in her most calm voice, she said 'hello nurse Abby speaking'......' WHY ARE YOU STILL

NOT BACK'...Abby moved the phone away from her ear and Phoebe was still yelling...'HOW IS IT THAT YOU CAN NEVER

GET ANYTHING I ASK OF YOU DONE, MY 80-YEAR-OLD GRANDMA MOVES FASTER THAN YOU, GET...BACK...HERE NOW!!'

*silence*

'ABBY......remember why you took these extra shifts' she said to herself as she fought the urge to lose it for the gazillion times this week.

Although Abby had worked previously in the ED she hated the department, it was the only place she thought she would never voluntarily work at, yet

here she was, developing anger issues and constantly being yelled at by nurses, patients and doctors. She usually works as a scrub nurse in general surgery 4 days a week

in the mornings and in afternoons she was at her second job, but due to financial issues, she has had to pick up extra shifts in the ED as two nurses are on maternity leave and she needs the money.

*at the nursing station*

Phoebe was on the phone with Dr Park, giving him a handover from nurse Kim who left early due to a family emergency, while documenting patient admissions,

soon enough she got off the phone and started scanning for Nurse Abby who had yet to return. She spotted Nurse John: ''nurse John before you leave, can you please complete a set of observations for the male patient in the yellow seat!'

'sure' John replied.

As John was preparing the treatment room, Phoebe added 'the department snail has yet to return, who knows which country she is taking a detour in' *eye roll*

John understood who she was referring to and he just nodded and proceeded to call the patient in.

John was aware of phoebe's snide comments, in fact, he was maybe even immune to them.

Abby and Phoebe were actually childhood friends. They grew up in the same town, went to the same schools and even studied nursing together at the same university. They were close most of their lives even though they had completely different upbringings and circumstances. Although Phoebe was not rich, she came from a middle-class well off family where she was the only child, so she was a little more carefree and sometimes a little entitled, whereas Abby lived with her grandparents and her little brother after the disappearance of their mother, her father passed away when she was 10yrs old. This meant she also had a lot of responsibilities.

They started drifting at the end of high school and even more so in their first year of university, while phoebe was busy partying and making friends, Abby was busy working different part-time jobs

you name it she has done it all. She not only had to put herself through school she had to look after her brother to help her aging grandparents all the while keeping her grades up

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I was at my own engagement party at the Sterling estate when the world started tilting. Victoria Sterling, my future mother-in-law, smiled coldly as she watched me struggle with a cup of tea that had been drugged to ruin me. Before I could find my fiancé, Ryan, a waiter dragged me into the forbidden West Wing and locked me in a room with Julian Sterling, the family’s "fallen titan" who had been confined to a wheelchair for years. The door burst open to a frenzy of camera flashes and theatrical screams. Victoria framed me as a seductress caught in the act, and Ryan didn't even try to listen to my pleas, calling me "cheap leftovers" before walking away with his pregnant mistress. When I turned to my own family for help, my father signed a document severing our relationship for a five-million-dollar payout from Julian. They traded me like a commodity without a second thought. I didn't understand why my own parents were so eager to sell me, or how Ryan could look at me with such disgust after promising me forever. I was a sacrifice, a pawn used to protect the family's offshore accounts, and I couldn't fathom how every person I loved had a price tag for my destruction. With nowhere left to go, I married Julian in a bleak ceremony at City Hall. He slid a heavy diamond onto my finger and whispered, "We have a war to start." That night, inside his secret penthouse, I watched the paralyzed man stand up from his wheelchair and activate a screen filled with the Sterling family's darkest secrets. The execution had officially begun.
