Detective Series: Reed Bryst Chapter 1 Sly Elapid

"Sir! Something happened with your daughter!" I heard my secretary said as she ran towards my office.

I immediately stood up upon hearing her voice, my forehead knotted because of her action.

Something happened?

I looked at her, her eyes were filled with fear. I've never seen her like this before.

She walked near me. Her sweats are seen, she is in tension.

"Straight to the point." I ordered.

"Aisling is lost. She was kidnapped." She said.

"What?!" I reacted in a dreaded voice.

I'm rich, I have a lot of business rivals but why would they bring my daughter up to the problem?

"Sir, Ais was last seen by their school gate. She was picked up by a white van, they were the suspected kidnappers." She added.

I started walking back and forth. Ais is my only daughter. I cannot afford to lose her.

I let out a sigh the moment a picture of someone entered my system. This can't be, he couldn't be the one responsible for the crime, well I'm hoping that he's not.

My secretary looked at me.

"Any further details?" I asked.

"They said not to call anyone. If we send the cops they will immediately kill Ais." She said weakly.

I can tell that this secretary of mine is having a hard time.

I've known her for years, her mind is innocent upon such crimes.

My office was then filled with silence. No one dared to talk. I'm feeling nervous. I'm not sure of who the culprit is.

A few seconds passed and someone entered my office. He is carrying a package while he is smiling widely.

He looked at me.

"Good day Sir, this package is sent for you." He said while walking towards me.

I signaled him to stop.

"How did you get up here?" I asked him.

Everybody knows that the security system here is tight. No one can enter easily.

"Through the door Sir." He answered.

A sarcastic one...

I continued to look at him. My eyes are serious, I'm facing a lot of problems so don't expect me to smile.

"What's inside the package?" I asked again.

He smiled even wider upon hearing me. This courier is creepy.

"Shall I open your memorial plan Sir?" He said as he smiled devishly. With hands moving swiftly, he took his gun out and he made the bullets rain towards our direction.

"Ellaine duck!" I told my secretary immediately. She followed my order.

I lowered myself to avoid being shot. I made myself fit under the desk of my table, I cannot die. Not now, Ais is in danger.

I immediately grabbed my gun in my lower closet. I reloaded it as fast as I could. And there, I shot the man but we exchanged bullets through our body. I wasn't able to move away, my shoulder is shot.

But the man fell down, his blood started to flow. But neither could an unrighteous man die early.

"I'm your nemesis

You will never find out about the thesis

Seek through the parentheses

I'm a snake

A traitor in our own kindred

The water by the ocean shall turn red

You will be nothing but dread." He said.

Before he could lose his breath he smiled once more and he said.

"My life is paid in full, I wouldn't mind dying. I'm sent to start your end. A messenger of sly elapid..." He said before he sighed his last breath.

Sly elapid? This is a serious case. I've never encountered code names before. Could this be a gang?

Ellaine looked at me. She moved out from her hiding place.

"Sir, Ais is in danger." She said.

I know, but how can I save her without knowing where to start?

Ellaine walked towards the dead body, there she picked up a box. The package that was supposed to be delivered.

She opened it, I watched her as she open it.

It was as a size of a shoebox. After unwrapping the package there she pulled out an envelope.

It was a brown envelope. She looked at me.

What could this be? My curiosity is bugging me out.

I signaled her to move closer to me. She handed me the envelope. The moment I held it my heart stopped beating.

The content of this envelope could give me hope or kill my chances.

I took a deep breath and then I started to break the seal.

The moment I pulled out the content of the envelope my tears started falling. It's containing a picture.

Who could do such thing? Do tell me this is a nightmare.

Ellaine took a peek from the picture and she gasped with a shocked expression.

I couldn't believe this, my princess doesn't deserve this. She is being treated like a slave.

Even worse than a slave.

I saw my daughter's arm with a tattooed name. It was written through her flesh. She is badly wounded.

"Sly elapid..." I read the name written in her arm.

My anger rose up upon mouthing that name. I'll make him pay!

I slammed the table with my anger. I groaned my frustrations out.

"UGH!!!" I swear the owner of that code name will pay. He'll regret the day that he messed with me.

I started making a mess. Ellaine just watched me. I turned the table down. With all my force I slammed the chairs to the floor. I wouldn't mind breaking all of this.

When I felt tiredness I grasped for air. I looked at Ellaine once more.

"Sir, anger won't lead to anything better." She advised me.

She is right, but this feeling can never be kept. I must let it out.

The room was filled with silence the only thing that could be heard was our breathing.

My phone suddenly rang. I picked it up from my pocket. I looked at the call register, this number is new.

I answered it immediately.

"Anger shall be your enemy

This is my epitome

You'll pay for messing with me." A deep dark voice said from the other line.

My anger rose once more.

"Who are you?!" I asked.

This is no time for joke or pranks. Swear, he must talk. I'll hunt him down.

"How can you hunt a hunter down?

A prey can never defeat his predator

A deer can never poison a snake

I'm your nightmare born to make your life miserable." He said.

This conversation creeps me out. How did he know my thoughts?

I looked around.

I closed all the open curtains. After closing them all, I went back to talking to him.

"I'll ask you again, who are you?!" I shouted.

I'm losing my patience.

"A puzzle is made to be solved

Look for the clues

I'll be found by the hue

The red between blue." He answered.

"Answer me!!!" I said with frustration.

I took a glance at the screen and there I saw the call officially ended. I threw my phone.

This is not making any sense, but for someone who can understand this it will be easy.

Why didn't I think of him? How dumb was I?

"Call he son of the senior detective, hire Reed Bryst." I ordered.

He is the only one who can help me.

I was once the princess of the Upper East Side, but now I’m just "debt wrapped in pretty skin." To keep my father alive in a federal penitentiary, I signed a contract I didn't fully understand. I thought it was about restoring my family's name, but producer Barnett Orr treated it like a bill of sale for my soul. Inside his limousine, the air smelled like gasoline and fear. Barnett didn't want a star; he wanted a victim. He bruised my jaw and ripped my vintage silk gown to shreds, laughing because he knew I couldn't fight back without signing my father's death warrant. "Don't forget who owns you, Felicity," he whispered. When he dragged me into Dewitt Knight’s penthouse party, I was a walking disaster. I huddled in Barnett’s oversized jacket, my lip bleeding and my spirit shattered. The elite crowd didn't see a victim; they saw a fallen girl selling herself for a role. A former rival poured red wine over me, and the room erupted in cruel laughter while Barnett told everyone he was just "testing my commitment." I looked up at the balcony, locking eyes with Dewitt Knight. He was a god in a bespoke suit, looking down at me with cold, lethal disgust. He didn't see the bruises or the desperation. He only saw a transaction he found beneath him. "So the rumors are true," he said, his voice cutting through the music. "The Aguilars really will do anything for money now. Even this." I was trapped between a monster who wanted to break me and a man who thought I was trash. No one cared that my father's life depended on my silence. When Barnett cornered me in a guest room later that night, his belt jingling like a death knell, I realized no one was coming to save a girl like me. I fought back with a crystal vase, shattering it against his shoulder, but I was drowning in my own terror. Just as Barnett lunged for my throat, the door was kicked off its hinges. Dewitt stood there, finally seeing the blood on the carpet and the map of purple bruises on my bare back. He chased the monster away, but I didn't feel safe. I locked the guest room door, wedged a chair under the handle, and slept with a silver letter opener pressed against my skin. When I crept into the kitchen at midnight and found him waiting in the shadows, I aimed the blade at his heart. "In this house, no one hurts you," he promised, his voice a low velvet rumble. But in a world where I had already been sold once, I knew that even protection came with a price I couldn't afford to pay.

The Billionaire's Secret Triplets: Mom's Revenge

HONEY MULLINS

Six years ago, I was a naive girl sold by my father to the powerful Sanders estate, only to be tossed onto the streets after a brutal assault they labeled "marital infidelity." I fled the country pregnant and broken, hiding from the shadow of a husband I had never even met. Now, I've returned to New York with my triplets to sign the final divorce papers and disappear forever. But Archibald Sanders-the man I was told was a crippled recluse-intercepted us with the cold precision of a predator. He didn't see the woman his family destroyed; he saw a gold-digger who had shamed his name. His security team hunted us to a grimy motel, using tactical force to snatch my children away and drag me to his glass-walled empire. In his office, he loomed over me, demanding a DNA test and threatening to throw me in prison while my babies were lost to the foster system. He was convinced I'd cheated, yet he stared at my sons with a haunting confusion, unable to ignore the stormy blue eyes that were a perfect mirror of his own. I stood there, paralyzed by his scent-the sharp tang of rain and expensive leather that triggered the icy dread of my worst nightmares. How could he accuse me of betrayal when he felt exactly like the monster who had shattered my life in that dark hotel room? "I'll sign anything," I sobbed, "just give me my kids." But the game changed when my five-year-old son hacked the tower's security, holding the skyscraper hostage to save me. In the chaos, a fragile, silent boy-Archibald's secret son-wandered into the room and reached for me as if I were his missing soul. Archibald's face turned to stone as he tore up the agreement and locked the doors. "Until I find out why my son is looking at you like that," he growled, "you aren't going anywhere."

Landslide

My bank account showed exactly $42.18, and my student loan notifications were flashing red. I lived in a sweltering Queens apartment with my Aunt Lydia, where the air was thick with the smell of stale frying oil and the constant threat of being homeless. Lydia handed me a grainy photo of a man twice my age and told me she had already "sold" me to him. He was a dry cleaner looking for a wife, and in exchange for my hand, he would pay off her credit cards and my debt. If I didn't show up for the date that night, my boxes would be on the curb by midnight. I arrived at the cafe in a state of panic, my selective mutism making it impossible to even breathe. In the crowded room, I accidentally sat at the wrong table. Instead of the man from the photo, I found myself facing Gerhard Holcomb—the cold, terrifyingly handsome billionaire whose family owned the very museum where I worked. He didn't send me away; instead, he studied my trembling hands and offered me a different deal: a two-year contract marriage, a two-million-dollar payout, and a strict clause forbidding any children. I signed the papers and moved into his Park Avenue penthouse, thinking I was finally safe. But when I went back to the old apartment to retrieve the only memento of my dead parents, Lydia lashed out, leaving me bleeding from a head wound. Gerhard’s retaliation was absolute—he had her arrested and her building foreclosed on within hours, claiming he was simply "protecting his assets." As I recovered in his silent, glass-walled home, I saw a call from a famous socialite flash on his phone, and a cold truth settled in my gut. I wasn't just a wife; I was a placeholder, a silent shield used to fend off the women from his past. I looked at the massive pink diamond on my finger and realized the silence I had lived in my whole life was about to become my most expensive prison. I had traded a life of poverty for a high-stakes game of shadows, and now I had to survive the man who claimed to own me.

SHANA GRAY

The sterile white of the operating room blurred, then sharpened, as Skye Sterling felt the cold clawing its way up her body. The heart monitor flatlined, a steady, high-pitched whine announcing her end. Her uterus had been removed, a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding, but the blood wouldn't clot. It just kept flowing, warm and sticky, pooling beneath her. Through heavy eyes, she saw a trembling nurse holding a phone on speaker. "Mr. Kensington," the nurse's voice cracked, "your wife... she's critical." A pause, then a sweet, poisonous giggle. Seraphina Miller. "Liam is in the shower," Seraphina's voice purred. "Stop calling, Skye. It's pathetic. Faking a medical emergency on our anniversary? Even for you, that's low." Then, Liam's bored voice: "If she dies, call the funeral home. I have a meeting in the morning." Click. The line went dead. A second later, so did Skye. The darkness that followed was absolute, suffocating, a black ocean crushing her lungs. She screamed into the void, a silent, agonizing wail of regret for loving a man who saw her as a nuisance, for dying without ever truly living. Until she died, she didn't understand. Why was her life so tragically wasted? Why did her husband, the man she loved, abandon her so cruelly? The injustice of it all burned hotter than the fever in her body. Then, the air rushed back in. Skye gasped, her body convulsing violently on the mattress. Her eyes flew open, wide and terrified, staring blindly into the darkness. Her trembling hand reached for her phone. May 12th. Five years ago. She was back.
