Chapter 1 Love Amidst Pain

Seated behind a wheel, a young woman in her twenties was crying profusely!

She kept wiping the tears but it wouldn't stop falling. She hit her hand on the wheel several times, trying to vent out her anger till her soft slender hand became bloody red!

" Miss! The container crashed and all the goods were destroyed! We lost everything, Miss!" The word which had been hunting her for an hour now came back playing in her head again and she screamed!

" Argh!" The lady shouted as she turned the wheel and parked her car beside the road.

If she continue driving, she feared she might have accident and another problem was the last thing she wanted right then~

" I was warned! Everyone warned me! I wanted to listen but my stubbornness kicked in and now I'm fucking ruined!" She sobbed as she rested her head on her wheel.

The young lady's name was Rosalie. Rosalie was from a wealthy home and she had always enjoyed luxury since her childhood~

She established her own company at the age of 19 and she had always given her all to it so as to make it soar high.

She rejected the help of her parents and friends and did everything in her power to make the company strong.

The company celebrated its sixth year anniversary a month ago and she received praises from everyone for bringing the company to the position it was then and she was glad!

But a particular lousy mouth mocked her that day and told her off! She told her how incompetent she was and pointed out all her loopholes which made Rosalie very unhappy.

That was what prompted her to invest in a foreign business. She sent a huge amount of money to some foreign clients to supply high grade products to her company. Everyone warned her and told her it was risky but she was desperate!

Desperate to show the lousy mouth that she was competent and she could always increase her company's finances on her own. So she sent the money, turning deaf ears to the warnings.

She had been expecting the goods since two weeks ago only to be called this morning that the goods crashed and everything in it was destroyed!

She couldn't wrap her head over it and she was devastated!. The money was all her life savings! She had nothing now and even the company would suffer if she didn't get the money back.

Rosalie wasn't ready to ask her parents for money nor her friends! She wasn't even ready to tell them anything as she knew it would only bring insult to her.

Many people would mock her and point out her incompetency~

" I've done everything for this company for the past six years that I can't just let it go down the ruins like this! I really can't lose everything this way! I don't want to start all over again!" She cried alone in her car.

She opened her car door and took one step out when her phone rang .

" Who the hell is calling me right now?! I'm really not in the mood for this!" She screamed and hissed.

She wanted to ignore the phone and leave the car but she decided against it. She picked her phone and checked the ID...

* Evelyn ( love)* was written on her phone screen.

" It's Evelyn..." She said slowly as she lost all interest in picking the call.

Evelyn was her best friend since childhood and they hardly do anything without each other .

Rosalie loved her best friend very much but she was not ready to tell her this either. She was ready to keep her problem to herself but that wasn't really the reason she didn't want to pick the call...

She didn't want to pick it because she knew her best friend well enough to know she was calling to gist her about society stuff which she was not ready to listen to this afternoon.

She dropped the phone and let out a deep breath.

" I wish all this is nothing but a dream...a very bad dream. A very very bad dream, I will soon wake up from~ I'm not ready for this and I don't think I deserve this either! I'm just fucking tired!" She mumbled and sighed.

Her tears had stopped falling after she had cried for an hour already and she just kept sighing here and then to let out her frustration.

" Ohhhhhhhhhhhhohhhh!" Her phone rang out loud and she knew it was her best friend again.

" should I just talk to Evelyn? I can tell her everything right?? She had always been my adviser since I started this company and even though I didn't take help from anyone, I always took her advice and I always cherished them.

If there is anyone who won't mock me right now, then it's her. I know she will be a bit mad at me for keeping it away from her when I wanted to invest in it but she will come back and give me the comfort I need.

Maybe I should just talk to her?" Rosalie thought as she stared at her phone's bright screen.

She hesitated a bit before picking the call and she regretted picking it immediately she picked it as Evelyn nearly destroyed her healthy ears~

" You silly girl! Where did you drop your phone since morning?! This is the fifth time I've been calling you today!

Tell me, are you with a boyfriend?? If so, I'm coming to crash that boyfriend of yours with the tire of my car right now!" Evelyn hollered over the phone and Rosalie had to keep the phone away from her ear for the sake of her healthy ears~

" Girl~" Rosalie complained but her best friend wouldn't listen that easily...

" Hey! I'm coming over to your place tomorrow and I will make sure to smash your nose in when I see you!" Evelyn threatened and Rosalie shuddered.

" Anyway...I have a gist for you..."

" here she is ... Wanting to gist with me after threatening me!"

" You know Mr Logan right?? He is in need of a surrogate mother and he promised to pay any amount to any lady that volunteers!"

Being second best is practically in my DNA. My sister got the love, the attention, the spotlight. And now, even her damn fiancé. Technically, Rhys Granger was my fiancé now-billionaire, devastatingly hot, and a walking Wall Street wet dream. My parents shoved me into the engagement after Catherine disappeared, and honestly? I didn't mind. I'd crushed on Rhys for years. This was my chance, right? My turn to be the chosen one? Wrong. One night, he slapped me. Over a mug. A stupid, chipped, ugly mug my sister gave him years ago. That's when it hit me-he didn't love me. He didn't even see me. I was just a warm-bodied placeholder for the woman he actually wanted. And apparently, I wasn't even worth as much as a glorified coffee cup. So I slapped him right back, dumped his ass, and prepared for disaster-my parents losing their minds, Rhys throwing a billionaire tantrum, his terrifying family plotting my untimely demise. Obviously, I needed alcohol. A lot of alcohol. Enter him. Tall, dangerous, unfairly hot. The kind of man who makes you want to sin just by existing. I'd met him only once before, and that night, he just happened to be at the same bar as my drunk, self-pitying self. So I did the only logical thing: I dragged him into a hotel room and ripped off his clothes. It was reckless. It was stupid. It was completely ill-advised. But it was also: Best. Sex. Of. My. Life. And, as it turned out, the best decision I'd ever made. Because my one-night stand isn't just some random guy. He's richer than Rhys, more powerful than my entire family, and definitely more dangerous than I should be playing with. And now, he's not letting me go.

For seventeen years, I was the crown jewel of the Kensington empire, the perfect daughter groomed for a royal future. Then, a cream-colored envelope landed in my lap, bearing a gold crest and a truth that turned my world into ice. The DNA test result was a cold, hard zero percent-I wasn't a Kensington. Before the ink could even dry, my parents invited my replacement, a girl named Alleen, into the drawing room and treated me like a trespasser in my own home. My mother, who once hosted galas in my honor, wouldn't even look me in the eye as she stroked Alleen's arm, whispering that she was finally "safe." My father handed me a one-million-dollar check-a mere tip for a billionaire-and told me to leave immediately to avoid tanking the company's stock price. "You're a thief! You lived my life, you spent my money, and you don't get to keep the loot!" Alleen shrieked, trying to claw the designer jacket off my shoulders while my "parents" watched with clinical detachment. I was dumped on a gritty sidewalk in Queens with nothing but three trunks and the address of a struggling laborer I was now supposed to call "Dad." I traded a marble mansion for a crumbling walk-up where the air smelled of exhaust and my new bedroom was a literal storage closet. My biological family thought I was a broken princess, and the Kensingtons thought they had successfully erased me with a payoff and a non-disclosure agreement. They had no idea that while I was hauling trunks up four flights of stairs, my secret media empire was already preparing to move against them. As I sat on a thin mattress in the dark, I opened my encrypted laptop and sent a single command that would cost my former father ten million dollars by breakfast. They thought they were throwing me to the wolves, but they forgot one thing: I'm the one who leads the pack.

I woke up on silk sheets that smelled of expensive cedar and cold sandalwood, a world away from my cramped apartment in Brooklyn. Beside me lay Ezra Gardner—my boss, the billionaire CEO of Gardner Holdings, and the man who could end my career with a snap of his fingers. He didn’t offer an apology for the night before; instead, he looked at me with terrifying clarity and proposed a cold, calculated business arrangement. "Marriage. It stabilizes the board and solves the PR crisis before it begins." He dressed me in archival Chanel and sent me home in his Maybach, but my life was already falling apart. My boyfriend, Irving, claimed he had passed out early, yet his location data placed him at my best friend’s apartment until three in the morning. When I tried to run, I realized Ezra was already ten steps ahead, tracking my movements and uncovering the secret I’d spent twenty years hiding: my connection to the powerful Senator Grimes. I was trapped between a CEO who treated me like a line item on a quarterly report and a boyfriend who had been using me while sleeping with my closest friend. I felt like a pawn in a game I didn't understand, wondering why a man like Ezra would walk up forty flights of stairs on a broken leg just to make sure I was safe. "Showtime, Mrs. Gardner." Standing on the red carpet in a gown that cost more than my life, I watched my cheating ex-boyfriend’s face turn pale as Ezra claimed me in front of the world. I wasn't just an assistant anymore; I was a weapon, and it was time to burn their world down.

I stood at my mother’s open grave in the freezing rain, my heels sinking into the mud. The space beside me was empty. My husband, Hilliard Holloway, had promised to cherish me in bad times, but apparently, burying my mother didn't fit into his busy schedule. While the priest’s voice droned on, a news alert lit up my phone. It was a livestream of the Metropolitan Charity Gala. There was Hilliard, looking impeccable in a custom tuxedo, with his ex-girlfriend Charla English draped over his arm. The headline read: "Holloway & English: A Power Couple Reunited?" When he finally returned to our penthouse at 2 AM, he didn't come alone—he brought Charla with him. He claimed she’d had a "medical emergency" at the gala and couldn't be left alone. I found a Tiffany diamond necklace on our coffee table meant for her birthday, and a smudge of her signature red lipstick on his collar. When I confronted him, he simply told me to stop being "hysterical" and "acting like a child." He had no idea I was seven months pregnant with his child. He thought so little of my grief that he didn't even bother to craft a convincing lie, laughing with his mistress in our home while I sat in the dark with a shattered heart and a secret life growing inside me. "He doesn't deserve us," I whispered to the darkness. I didn't scream or beg. I simply left a folder on his desk containing signed divorce papers and a forged medical report for a terminated pregnancy. I disappeared into the night, letting him believe he had successfully killed his own legacy through his neglect. Five years later, Hilliard walked into "The Vault," the city's most exclusive underground auction, looking for a broker to manage his estate. He didn't recognize me behind my Venetian mask, but he couldn't ignore the neon pink graffiti on his armored Maybach that read "DEADBEAT." He had no clue that the three brilliant triplets currently hacking his security system were the very children he thought had been erased years ago. This time, I wasn't just a wife in the way; I was the one holding all the cards.
