Chapter 1

Sarafina, that was her name, a red hair lady whose priority was her family. As an only child, the responsibilities of her sick dad weighed heavily on her.

She had roamed from one job to another hoping to secure a well paid one, she had no one else except for her father and her mother, that's is if she's alive.

Sarafina grew up without a mother and she was contented with that

"Dad, the doctor said if you continue taking your meds as prescribed, you will be on your feet in no time" Sarafina beamed at her dad, she dropped his breakfast on the table next to him, adjusting his wheelchair to a more comfortable state.

"Those pills are so large and they taste as awful" sarafina's dad groaned, he reached for the plate of fried plantains seasoned well enough randomly picking at the thick piece

"I know but with time it will be over, trust me dad" Sh encouraged patting his grey hairs out of his face, he had refused to get a haircut to sarafina's distaste

"Of course, there's only two pills left in the pack"

Sarafina paused, worry creasing her forehead. The pills were what the doctor said would keep her dad going, his hypertension had gotten the most part of him.

Once while walking down the stairs, sarafina's dad had collapsed due to stroke. This had led to the paralysis of his legs, it could progress further, sarafina had seen some whose hypertension had led to their full body paralysis, she feared without the pills her dad could become a victim

"Dad!" She called panic thick in her voice. "Why didn't you tell me earlier before now, I should refill it" sarafina rose from her kneeling position, she stirred the ginger tea and tasted

" Right to your taste, make sure you savour every drop. I should be on my way dad, take care and call me if anything going wrong, the phone is right by your left"

By the time Sarafina completed her speech she was out by the door already.

She had no destination in mind, the thought of her dad's pill exhausting and leading to a serious health problem plagued her. She couldn't stay still and watch that happen, just last week sarafina was fired from her job as a stripper, the pay from that day had been their only mode of surviving

It had rained yesterday, everywhere was wet and vehicles roamed through the mud filled road, children played in the puddle while their parents called out for them, the scene made sarafina smile, she had made her mind already, taking a sharp turn she dragged her feet briskly to the strip club she no longer worked at.

Sarafina adjusted her hoodie letting it drop over her face, her steps faltered and her breath hitched, taking in a deep breath to gather up courage, she resumed walking quickly.

Luck wasn't on her side, whatever or whoever she was trying to avoid Chased after her easily grabbing her arm to halt her

" Sean, let go. I'm in a hurry" sarafina attempted to snatch away, though successful but with a red painful mark, she muttered profanities under her breath. She continued walking ignoring Sean who trailed next her.

" Sarah, why don't you listen to me for once. You can't keep denying how much you love me" Sean declared. His feet thumped against the cold floor as he walked

"I don't want this anymore Sean, I don't love you, do let me go okay. We had a relationship, but it's over I no longer want to be with you. Do yourself a favor and stay off. Away" Sarafina heaved, refusing to meet his gaze, she could hear the pause in his movement

"I hope you know what you're getting yourself into" She heard him say, the subtle threat in his words didn't go unnoticed, Sean always had difficulty taking no for answer, at first she admired that habit in him mistaking it for determination, he soon proved her wrong and pulling away was becoming a hard thing.

Pushing Sean and his obsessive behavior to the back of her mind, Sarafina arrived at the club sneaking her way into the backstage, she was sure to find who she came for there. The convenient room was filled with ladies changing their attire, each one recognized her as they threw familiar pleasantries

"Sarah, over here"

Sarafina grinned at her friend Amber, they had both met at the club and clicked right away. Amber was a tall lady whose mischief never failed to amuse people around her, she took the stripping job as her own rebellious stage in life as she would often be heard saying. Most times Amber spent her time as an escort.

" Hey, I need to talk to you" sarafina didn't bother to beat around the bush, the worry in her wouldn't allow her to, Amber looked around taking in her friends pale face, she would immediately sense something was wrong

Amber grabbed Sarafina's hand leading her to a secluded room where the voices of the changing women could be distantly heard.

" Talk to me" Amber demanded looking her friend dead in the eyes.

"I need help Amber, I don't want you to say no pls" Sarafina pleaded taking Amber's palm and intertwining it with hers,

" Tell me Sarah, I will gladly help"

"I wanna be an escort..." Sarafina announced, clasping their hands tightly, Amber's brows furrowed, she had never in her life expected Sarafina of all people to approach her with that

" What are you talking about. You have always felt repulsed of such act"

"I know-w Amber," her voice shook noticable, she was trying hard to hold in her emotions

"Dad's pill are almost exhausted, I have being fired from my job. I don't know where to get all this money from. Look, I know I should have looked elsewhere but I swear I have nowhere else, no one will offer me money within two days, Amber I need this" Sarafina was getting desperate by the second, her voice rose significantly

Amber silently admired her, no one could have predicted Sarafina's troubles, she always looked calm from the outside and made drastic decisions with no hint of worry.

"Calm down Sarah, I'm willing to help you in every way possible, all I want to know is are you sure you want to do this"

" Yes" the answer came with no hesitation

Amber nodded " I will help you"

"Don't worry.. if you're sure you wanna do this then I have no qualms but I really wish I had another way to help apart from this" Amber's voice was sullen heavily sharing her friend's emotion, she squeezed Sarafina's hand that was still in her grip reassuringly

"I was called just yesterday, I will have you take my place okay? Also, it's tomorrow so you have the whole of today to decide if you still want to. Make sure you're ready for this okay" Amber said her tone very motherly.

Sarafina nodded, she was certain she she wasn't going to change her mind.

'Come tommorow, dad you will be fine, I will make sure of that' she thought

Rain hammered against the asphalt as my sedan spun violently into the guardrail on the I-95. Blood trickled down my temple, stinging my eyes, while the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers mocked my panic. Trembling, I dialed my husband, Clive. His executive assistant answered instead, his voice professional and utterly cold. "Mr. Wilson says to stop the theatrics. He said, and I quote, 'Hang up. Tell her I don’t have time for her emotional blackmail tonight.'" The line went dead while I was still trapped in the wreckage. At the hospital, I watched the news footage of Clive wrapping his jacket around his "fragile" ex-girlfriend, Angelena, shielding her from the storm I was currently bleeding in. When I returned to our penthouse, I found a prenatal ultrasound in his suit pocket, dated the day he claimed to be on a business trip. Instead of an apology, Clive met me with a sneer. He told me I was nothing but an "expensive decoration" his father bought to make him look stable. He froze my bank accounts and cut off my cards, waiting for the hunger to drive me back to his feet. I stared at the man I had loved for four years, realizing he didn't just want a wife; he wanted a prop he could switch off. He thought he could starve me into submission while he played father to another woman's child. But Clive forgot one thing. Before I was his trophy wife, I was Starfall—the legendary voice actress who vanished at the height of her fame. "I'm not jealous, Clive. I'm done." I grabbed my old microphone and walked out. I’m not just leaving him; I’m taking the lead role in the biggest saga in Hollywood—the one Angelena is desperate for. This time, the "decoration" is going to burn his world down.

I was once the heiress to the Solomon empire, but after it crumbled, I became the "charity case" ward of the wealthy Hyde family. For years, I lived in their shadows, clinging to the promise that Anson Hyde would always be my protector. That promise shattered when Anson walked into the ballroom with Claudine Chapman on his arm. Claudine was the girl who had spent years making my life a living hell, and now Anson was announcing their engagement to the world. The humiliation was instant. Guests sneered at my cheap dress, and a waiter intentionally sloshed champagne over me, knowing I was a nobody. Anson didn't even look my way; he was too busy whispering possessively to his new fiancée. I was a ghost in my own home, watching my protector celebrate with my tormentor. The betrayal burned. I realized I wasn't a ward; I was a pawn Anson had kept on a shelf until he found a better trade. I had no money, no allies, and a legal trust fund that Anson controlled with a flick of his wrist. Fleeing to the library, I stumbled into Dallas Koch—a titan of industry and my best friend’s father. He was a wall of cold, absolute power that even the Hydes feared. "Marry me," I blurted out, desperate to find a shield Anson couldn't climb. Dallas didn't laugh. He pulled out a marriage agreement and a heavy fountain pen. "Sign," he commanded, his voice a low rumble. "But if you walk out that door with me, you never go back." I signed my name, trading my life for the only man dangerous enough to keep me safe.

I was four months pregnant, weighing over two hundred pounds, and my heart was failing from experimental treatments forced on me as a child. My doctor looked at me with clinical detachment and told me I was in a death sentence: if I kept the baby, I would die, and if I tried to remove it, I would die. Desperate for a lifeline, I called my father, Francis Acosta, to tell him I was sick and pregnant. I expected a father's love, but all I got was a cold, sharp blade of a voice. "Then do it quietly," he said. "Don't embarrass Candi. Her debutante ball is coming up." He didn't just reject me; he erased me. My trust fund was frozen, and I was told I was no longer an Acosta. My fiancé, Auston, had already discarded me, calling me a "bloated whale" while he looked for a thinner, wealthier replacement. I left New York on a Greyhound bus, weeping into a bag of chips, a broken woman the world considered a mistake. I couldn't understand how my own father could tell me to die "quietly" just to save face for a party. I didn't know why I had been a lab rat for my family’s pharmaceutical ambitions, or how they could sleep at night while I was left to rot in the gray drizzle of the city. Five years later, the doors of JFK International Airport slid open. I stepped onto the marble floor in red-soled stilettos, my body lean, lethal, and carved from years of blood and sweat. I wasn't the "whale" anymore; I was a ghost coming back to haunt them. With my daughter by my side and a medical reputation that terrified the global elite, I was ready to dismantle the Acosta empire piece by piece. "Tell Francis to wash his neck," I whispered to the skyline. "I'm home."
