I've been sitting here for hours now. If I keep at this for any longer, I'm going to lose it. I keep refreshing this damn phone but nothing. Maybe Emma's wifi is broken, or I'm doing something wrong. I don't think I can wait for her to get back. She said she would be busy, but this is important. Maybe I should just call, I'm sure she'll understand.
"Hey babe, I know you're at work but...," I said.
"But nothing Tamara, I'm really busy right now," Emma interrupted. "Whatever it is, I'll handle it when I get back. I promise."
"But it's just the wi...,"I tried to explain.
"Love you, bye," Emma said, talking in a low voice as she ended the call.
I guess I'm on my own now. What could be wrong with this thing? I did everything right, I think.
This is the last time I'm trying this stupid password. Yes! Finally, some internet. I was beginning to give up on New York for a minute there. I guess this old thing just needed a little charm.
I can't believe it's finally here. Okay, I can do this. Worst-case scenario, I could just go back to my old job. It wasn't that bad after all. To be honest, I liked it a lot. Mr. Park was a nice guy, he paid well, treated his staff with some respect, and always gave us an extra week after the holidays. I'm almost certain he only does that because he wants some extra time off too. But all the same, it was nice. The only problem was the annoying gossip at the office. She kept insisting that I had to be sleeping with Mr. Tom to get this job. The truth is I was completely qualified for the position. It wasn't my fault Mr. Tom was attracted to me. I guess there always has to be a bad guy. She just doesn't know any better. Kate would probably rush at the opportunity to sleep with him if it meant she would get a few favors. Who am I kidding? They'll never take me back. I've been gone for too long. There's certainly no way I'm moving back to London at this point.
Ding... Ding
Who could that be? Emma didn't say she was expecting any visitors. Maybe it's just a neighbor. I have to check it out, the mail can wait a few more minutes.
"Surprise!" Emma screamed as she pulled me in for a hug.
"Wait... Wait... You're supposed to be at work" I said, drawing her face backwards in confusion.
"That's true, but I convinced my boss otherwise," Emma replied.
"What... How?" I asked.
"Told him I had to take care of some girl emergency, you know," Emma said, with a naughty smile, "Now can you please let me into my own house?"
"Oh, sorry. I was so excited," I giggled, moving aside to let Emma in.
I'm sure Emma is already wondering if I've gotten the mail yet. I've been too scared to open it. I'll just ask her to do it for me now she's here. I'm going to go blind if I do it myself.
"Are you going to make me ask?" Emma asked, rolling her eyes.
"Ask what?" I replied.
"Did you get the job?" Emma asked, moving her face in closer for a reply.
"Oh yeah, that. Well... ."I looked away.
"Well, what?"
"I haven't checked it yet," I replied, exhaling after.
"Why not?"
"What... What if I didn't make it Emma?" I asked, "What am I going to do then?"
"Tamara, I've never known you to be scared of anything. These people would be lucky to have you. If they don't realise that, then it's their loss," she said, "You'll find something better. This is New York, they are opportunities all over the place."
"Thanks, Emma," I smiled.
Emma has always been my cheerleader. We've been best friends since high school and I don't think I could've gotten through most of it without her. She always knows the right words to say. Even if she's a little bossy and annoying sometimes, she's irreplaceable.
"If you want, I could check it for you,"Emma smiled.
"Yes please," I replied, nodding as I pressed her lips together with a smile.
I gave my phone to Emma and stepped away. I watched as she sat on the bed, took a deep breath and slowly moved her fingers to the screen. I could tell when she exhaled in relief it was good news. She raised her eyes towards me and smiled.
"We're going to party!" Emma screamed, then jumped out of the bed to hug me.
Before I knew it, I was in the air. Emma wrapped her arms around my waist as she lifted me, and then she attempted to spin around. We both fell into the bed and started laughing. When we stopped, I couldn't stop smiling for a few seconds. But my anxiety got the better of me quickly.
"Okay relax, it's just the interview. There's still so much that could go wrong," I said, trying to hide my excitement.
"Don't worry about that dear, It's going to be a breeze. We both know no one can resist your charms," Emma teased.
"Well, I guess you're right about the charm," I replied, and then we both laughed.
"What company was it again?"She asked.
'Can't say, I don't want to jinx it, "I smiled.
"I have to take a shower now dear. I'm proud of you," Emma said as she sat up straight.
"Thank you, Emma. That means so much coming from you."
"Anytime girl. I have to go shower now, you can help yourself to the cake." Emma walked away.
I guess she's right. I've had plenty of experience being a personal assistant and all my credentials are legitimate. I could honestly say I'm overqualified for the position. I won't let my head get the better of me. The interview is in 7 days so I have all the time in the world to be prepared. I've got this.
